Financial SummaryTwelve years ofservice on the AlumniCouncil and 13 yearswith the Board ofTrustees have givenme the firsthandopportunity to see andappreciate the benefitsalumni get from main-taining involvementwith our law school.

Of course, the law school benefits fromfinancial support and alumni involvement inextracurricular activities, guest lecturing,helping with recruiting and all of the thingswe do to make our law school a better place.The new buildings recently completed willprovide an enhanced education for our children, grandchildren and all the genera-tions that will come after us.

However, alumni gain much more thanwe ever give by staying involved or bybecoming re-involved. For the last few yearsthe Board of Trustees have been particularlyengaged in increasing opportunities for alum-ni to participate in various activities in sup-port of our College of Law. Recruitment,stewardship programs, annual giving and thebuilding fund for the expansion have provid-ed many of us the opportunity to maintain orrenew friendships with classmates and, infact, generations of Gator lawyers.

Most of us created many fond memoriesand lasting friendships in the three years atlaw school. The friends made in schoolbecome only a small group compared to thefriendships that you make and maintain bystaying involved. We have lawyers on ourAlumni Council and Board of Trustees fromevery part of Florida and many who practiceoutside the state. By participating in alumniactivities, you give yourself the opportunity tomaintain old friendships, make new friendsand continually enjoy watching the growthand expansion of our college.

One of the jobs of the chair of the Boardof Trustees is to encourage all of our alumniand friends to financially support the Collegeof Law. You should. The return on investmentwill far exceed anything that you can get inany other financial endeavor. But if you goone more step and involve yourself personal-ly in the activities surrounding our college,you will multiply your return, see firsthandthe benefits of your financial contributionsand realize again why it is great to be a Flori-da Gator.

There is an imagethat comes to mindwhen I reflect on whyalumni give to the lawschool or participate inthe Law Alumni Coun-cil. It involves a tall,stable ladder we allhave been fortunateenough to climb. I seeus bending down,

extending helping hands to those coming upbehind us.

Many of you — specifically those listed inthe following pages — have generouslyreached out to provide much needed supportso the school can continue to offer a highquality education.

You have recognized the tremendous benefits we receive from our association withthe college and our obligation to return someof those dividends. You understand thattuition and state funding can’t fully fund theneeds of the law school. If the school is tocontinue to excel and become one of the top 10 public programs, we all have to play abigger role.

Over the last couple of years the LawAlumni Council has reorganized and imple-mented effective strategies to encouragemore alumni to step forward with financialassistance. One effort divides the state intoregions, in which chairpersons are responsi-ble for working closely with their committeesto plan and conduct programs to meet specified goals. Some groups organizedbreakfasts, lunches or receptions, while others meet one-on-one with colleagues. By putting the responsibility and authority inthe local areas, alumni — who know theirarea best — are making inroads.

Another approach has been encouraginggraduating students to pledge support beforethey begin their professional lives. Therevived class gift program has been tremen-dously successful and has gotten strongereach year as students learn early in their lawcareer that giving makes us all stronger. Whenyou consider that struggling students aremaking a commitment with funds they aren’tyet earning, it should encourage us all towork harder to help the college.

As the Law Alumni Council continues to press forward, we hope you will get moreinvolved. Holding a degree from the LevinCollege of Law is both a privilege and obligation, and we need your assistance to help more individuals up the ladder.

Endowment IncomeGifts to the law school’s endowment are notspent, but instead are carefully invested toyield a dependable, stable source of incomein perpetuity. Approximately 3.67 percent ofearned interest from the market value of theendowment fund balance was transferredand spent for specific uses designated bydonors and by college administrators forannual operating and administrative costs.(The additional earned interest above the3.67 percent is returned to the fund balance.)The fund grew almost 9 percent in 2004-05under the stewardship of the University ofFlorida Foundation, which oversees invest-ments and law school endowment income.

Primary reason I became a lawyer:

I had a lot of family members involved in the law, plus Iwas on the debate team in high school and college andfelt I would be a reasonably good candidate.

Guiding professional philosophy:

Start by determining the best way to serve the needs ofthe client.

Once I began practicing, I realized the UF Levin Collegeof Law provided me with:

A marvelous scope of studies, a diverse and challenginggroup of professors, a post-graduate network of compatriots in law and lifelong friends.

Why I give back to my law school:

In appreciation of those earlier givers, the pioneers whogot the school going and kept it going; and for three greatyears as a student and 50 bonus years as an alumnus. Ialso hope to nurture future attorneys and help underwriteprograms such as moot court and law review.

Upon viewing several episodes of“Perry Mason” in the late 50s, Itold my father I wanted to be alawyer. Later as an undergraduate, I had several friends who wereattending the law school. I made adecision that I, too, could secure alaw degree, even though at thetime it was a career path womenwere not readily pursuing.


The practice of law grants the practitioner not only great privilegebut also the awesome responsibility of securing opportunities for individuals to resolve disputes before and in an open, independent judiciary.

Once I began practicing, I realized the UF Levin College of Law provided me with:

Perseverance and discipline, which helped me acquire moreand greater tools for overcoming obstacles; the ability to thinkstrategically; a network that has served me in my politicalendeavors; credibility, which opened doors for me; benefitsfrom its enhanced reputation; and the man I married and practiced with for 30 years. In short, my professional career,my public life and my personal happiness are all tied, perhapsinexplicably, to the College of Law.


What I received from my mother (who worked three jobs tokeep me in school), UF faculty members and friends, as wellas my husband and partner, made a huge difference in my lifeand simply requires that I give back. The UF Levin College ofLaw deserves my support for all that it has given me and sothat it can continue to do for others what it did for me and myfellow graduates.

law students are pledging and

giving back to their law school

at record rates.

The Fall 2004 graduating class

— led by Lauren Cury and

Edrene Johnson — had 35 per-

cent participation (137 students)

to raise $36,100 in gifts and

pledges.

The Spring 2005 class had

a 30 percent participation rate,

with 193 students raising

$56,975 in gifts and pledges —

the highest amount raised by

one class to date. Julie Miller,

Knox oversaw the fundraising.

Many contributions will remain

unrestricted for the college’s

greatest needs while others will

be used for programs such as

Law school gives me the power to:

Effectively explore new concepts and meet a diverse rangeof challenges. Law classes do more for students than simply teaching the primary principles of an area of law.Classes also facilitate the development of creative analyticalthinking. The ability to effectively evaluate a problem frommany different angles is a tool students can employ to helpovercome almost any test life or the law puts before them.

This scholarship has enabled me to:

Pursue my education in academic areas that are criticallyrelevant to nearly every aspect of American life. I believemy legal education has given me a greater understandingof the intricacies of government and the mechanisms forchange. Truly understanding an area of law that governsmy interests allows me to participate in those fields in adeep and meaningful way.

Upon graduation I hope to:

Work in the field of entertainment, arts and sports law.Music has always been a passion of mine. In the future, I would like to start my own record label.

How I plan to give back:
