■ Voice was once revenue-generating for many schools; no longer

■ Users have adopted consumer services to meet personal / profession needs• Cellular• Consumer IM&P (e.g. AIM, YIM, MSN)• Consumer VoIP (e.g. Skype, FWD)

■ How can universities develop services to:• Recapture these customers?• Enhance the campus life experience?• Facilitate collaborative research?• Improve productivity?


Challenge #2: Middleware Gap

■ Internet2 has largely taken a “field of dreams” approach to applications• Build the fat pipes and the apps will come

■ This is not working• There's a big gap between Layer 3 and Layer 7

■ What's missing?• Middleware• Do we sit by and wait for the Shawn Fannings of

the world to build it or do we?

P2P and the Enterprise

■ P2P file-sharing explosion • Internet2's network connectivity +

Napster's middleware = P2P FS Explosion■ Similar potential for real-time apps

• This time get ahead of the curve and provide the enabling middleware ourselves

communicate• Users are highly-motivated to communicate • Connect them and watch what happens• Connectivity from new MW infrastructure
