Internet2 Who?

Elevator Explanation• Internet2's mission is to develop and deploy advanced network

applications and technologies, accelerating the creation of tomorrow’s Internet

Who we really are• Membership organization of 200+ US research universities• Parent 501.3c (UCAID) has board of university presidents• Project supported by numerous partnerships (government,

industry, international)

Goals• Enable new generation of applications• Re-create leading edge R&E network capability• Transfer capability to global production internet

■ Demographics• ~3.8 million students (tech-savvy, talk a lot, adapt easily)• And, by the way, they graduate (tech-transfer à la email)

■ Institutional Commitments• Internet2 members have committed to advance IP communications and promote collaborative apps• Many are looking for ways to reverse eroding voice revenues

■ Connectivity• Great networking connectivity

–High-bandwidth, low-loss, low-jitter –End-to-end transparency (few NATs)– IPv6 and multicast too!

• Emerging middleware infrastructure for AuthN/Z• Need to build on this to connect users with each other!

Internet2's Secret Sauce

VoIP

■ Not just a cost-saving hack ■ Open industry standards and the Internet

are revolutionizing telecom• New industry structures• New architectures, services, and applications• No longer a binary choice between PBX and Centrex

■ Trends• Decentralized control

• À la carte system components and services• Greater empowerment of campuses and enterprises• Greater empowerment of end users

The Campus Communications

Challenge...

Challenge #1:Dude, Where're My Customers?

■ Voice was once revenue-generating for many schools; no longer

■ Users have adopted consumer services to meet personal / profession needs• Cellular• Consumer IM&P (e.g. AIM, YIM, MSN)• Consumer VoIP (e.g. Skype, FWD)

■ How can universities develop services to:• Recapture these customers?• Enhance the campus life experience?• Facilitate collaborative research?• Improve productivity?

Next-Generation Campus Services – Spring 2005 VON, March 8th, 2005 San Jose, CA 9

Challenge #2: Middleware Gap

■ Internet2 has largely taken a “field of dreams” approach to applications• Build the fat pipes and the apps will come

■ This is not working• There's a big gap between Layer 3 and Layer 7

■ What's missing?• Middleware• Do we sit by and wait for the Shawn Fannings of

the world to build it or do we?

P2P and the Enterprise

■ P2P file-sharing explosion • Internet2's network connectivity +

Napster's middleware = P2P FS Explosion■ Similar potential for real-time apps

• This time get ahead of the curve and provide the enabling middleware ourselves

■ Religion: "Paths in the snow"• Don't predict how users will want to

communicate• Users are highly-motivated to communicate • Connect them and watch what happens• Connectivity from new MW infrastructure

More Religion

■ Voice is strategic• But it's not just about voice (of course)

■ Cheap phone calls are nice• But new apps / value are better

■ Integrating campus IT assets is key■ Metcalfe's Law rules
