Preparing For Flea Season

W ith the 2016 flea season fast approaching, PMPs are beginning the process of selecting adulticides, IGRs

and application equipment — all with the hopes of a retreat and call back free year. While all of these things are usually top of mind and instrumental in controlling fleas, let’s not forget about the not so obvious factors that play a key role in controlling fleas in residential settings. Here are some key questions technicians should remember to ask when preparing to control fleas at an account:

1. How were the fleas introduced?• Is the residence frequented by stray animals, wildlife

or rodents? • Are there harborage areas in, around or beneath

the structure? • Are the pets frequented by other pets?• Are the pets treated for fleas on a regular basis?

2. Have I effectively communicated with the customer?• Did I effectively communicate the cause of the infestation

and how we will address this moving forward?• Did I set the right expectations by thoroughly explaining

flea biology and habits and what to do and expect in the next few days?

Author: Chris Swain, BCE, Technical Service Manager at MGK

Note whether a customer has dogs, cats, or both. Inspect different areas for dogs versus cats. Cats often rest on windowsills, bookshelves and high up areas, as well as furniture and floors. Dogs are mainly on furniture and floors, but there’s usually

no need to inspect areas like bookshelves, windowsills, and other high up vantage points if dogs are the only pets.

If a customer has no pets, but you have identified a flea problem, there are several possible reasons.1. Inspect property for signs of strays or wild animals near or under the home and in the yard.2. Ask about any animals that may have come to visit.3. Ask about any fabric items recently brought in that may have been in a home with pets.

Pre-emerged fleas in the last stage of their cocoon development cycle have very low metabolic activity. Under cool, humid conditions, fleas can remain in this stage for up to a year. They are stimulated to emerge by pressure and heat. This can account for people being “attacked” by fleas after vacation or when moving into a new space where there was a previous infestation or pets.

Fleas use sight and heat sensing to locate hosts. Fleas are more attracted to red or blue than white or yellow. They are also more attracted to warm moving objects than warm stationary ones. Keep this in mind when evaluating different flea traps.

Management:• Educate customers regarding the difficulties associated

with managing this species of pest ant.• Consult with property owners to request assistance with

removal of all possible nesting sites.• Diligent planning for treatment is necessary for successful

management.• Careful calculations of necessary amounts of pesticides

to be applied are critical to successful tawny crazy ant management.

• Perimeter treatments of structure AND treatment of surrounding landscape with residual insecticide appears to be the best management approach.

• Frequent post-treatment observations of the effectiveness of management approach are advised.

Tawny Crazy AntsA newly invasive species of pest ant is making its way across

Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and Florida. These ants invade new areas very rapidly and population densities have been observed to reach extraordinary levels. In urban habitats, tawny crazy ants become an extreme nuisance as they forage around, on, and inside structures. They have been implicated in the damage and destruction of a wide variety of electrical components and equipment. These ants represent a challenge that will require diligence from the pest management industry to solve.

Biology and Behavior:• Loose and erratic foraging trails.• Extraordinarily dense populations.• Will nest under any available material (potted plants,

debris, landscaping objects, etc.).• No conspicuous mounds.• Terrestrial and arboreal, these ants will readily move onto

trees and shrubs that are available to them.• Populations of these ants consist of many queens – allowing for

high reproductive capabilities and elevated invasion success.
