Partner Information for the Trade and Producers Proposals for more organic in Europe In Europe, organic agriculture is coming to be regarded increasingly as the agricul- tural system of the future. As part of an EU research project, Naturland and IFOAM are investigating what constructive efforts can be made to encourage the expansion of organic management and regional development. Even though this industry is experiencing dramatic growth and increased political efforts are being made on its behalf, there are still great discrepancies between the individual EU member states. In Ger- many, Austria and Denmark, for example, the demand for new land to be farmed organically cannot be met quickly enough. In Poland and Bulgaria, on the other hand, a major portion of their organic produce is exported because the domestic market is still weak. At the IFOAM EU conference in April, the research partners will be present- ing two new books, studies of market and farmland expansion and the effect of various European agri-environmental programmes. > For more on the subject, see www.naturland.de/politische-themen.html Naturland shows distinct signs of growth For two years, increases in area and the number of farms were rather modest. Now the records show a double-digit increase for Naturland: the number of farms in Germany has grown by 10.5%, bringing it up to 2,900. At the same time the area managed in Germany to the Naturland standards has risen to over 150,000 hectares of agricul- tural land and some 54,000 hectares of woodland. Hans Hohenester, an organic farmer and chairman of the board of Natur- land, credits keenness to convert to organic to improvements in subsidies, among other things. The developments are also positive for Naturland beyond Germany’s borders too: here some 35,000 farmers now manage almost 120,000 hectares according to the Naturland standards. This is an increase in the area farmed of 4.5% compared to the year before. Particular potential for growth in 2016 has been identified in South America and Asia. The Kritischer Agrarbericht 2016, a yearbook taking a criti- cal look at the current situation of agriculture in Germany, was presented at the International Green Week in Berlin. This time the ambivalent topic of growth came under its scrutiny. Naturland, too, is growing again, something which we regard as wholly positive. If more farmers manage more farmland in accordance with our strict standards, we get closer to our goal of establishing worldwide a form of agriculture and a food industry which are both ecological and socially accept- able. However, the greater the number of members, the greater the responsibility: only an uninterrupted quality assurance procedure can guarantee that identically high standards are complied with locally and on a global scale. Since the introduction of the Naturland Fair standards, Naturland has been able to certify 583 products made by 37 of its partners. They come from nine different countries, Germany being the one to head the statistics by a good margin. When considering how to safeguard the future of Germany’s agriculture, the topic of fair trade gains ever more in importance in the light of falling producer prices.

This is also reflected in the commodities and raw material groups in which the Naturland Fair logo is to be found. Besides the traditional fair trade goods sourced from countries in the global south, such as coffee, tea, chocolate, tropical fruits and spices, there has meanwhile been a marked increase in the ratio of fair trade products from Europe. These include fruit, mushrooms, herbs and dried fruit, cereals and cereal products, bread and bakery products, pasta, pulses, olives and olive products, meat and sausages, milk and dairy products, smoked trout and wine.

The Biofach affords visitors a good opportunity to gain a general impressi-on of the current product range. Of the 57 participants represented at the joint Naturland booth in pavilion 6/6, 13 of them are presenting products certified to the Naturland Fair standards.

LaSelva under new management Thirty five years ago, Karl Egger created the Tuscan fine food brand, LaSelva. Now Egger, a pioneer of organic agriculture and a founder member of Naturland, has passed on the management of the company to Christian Stivaletti. Stivaletti, who is a food technology engineer, is himself a native of Tuscany and plans to follow in Egger’s managerial footsteps: however much the company grows, he intends to maintain its high standards of ecology and taste. Tradespeople have an opportunity to meet the new general manager at the Biofach.. Contact: Peter Hüller, [email protected] A new look for this fine food brand bio-verde is starting the year with a fresh design. This manufacturer of fine foods, with its facilities in Eresing, Germany, has completely reworked its logotype and packaging. On the right, statements of interest to the consumer are presented in a clear typography. On the left market motifs in the familiar watercolour-like design are used to divide their range at a glance into the product groups salads and spreads, antipasti, pasta, dairy products, sausage and ham, and fish. Contact: Ann Christina Steer, [email protected] The barbecue season begins at the Biofach Biofino, a finishing plant in Emstek, and the organic hatchery, poultry farms and feed mills, are to be found largely in Germany, with some few in Austria. In this way, Biofino, a partner of Naturland, is able to guarantee its customers the highest possible degree of transparency, safety and quality. At this year’s Biofach this company turns the spotlight on its ready-seasoned range of barbecue products. These include its top sellers, inner fillets of organic chicken cowboy style, turkey paprika steaks and Montana skewers. Kontakt: Jürgen Tölke, [email protected] Eggs from a trusted source Since 2007 Axvitalis has dedicated itself to the sale and production of top-grade food-stuffs. Under the management of Simon J. Grassl and Andre Klan, this Naturland partner provides several million eggs a year to supermarkets and convenience stores throughout Germany. This small business, with its offices in regensburg, Germany, co-operates with just under 30 organic egg farms, thus guaranteeing that its sources can be trusted. One of their suppliers is Gut rauschhof, the eggs of which will be on display at the Biofach. Contact: Simon J. Graßl and Andre Klan, [email protected]

Judged and found commendable One of the items in the range of Ökofrost, a specialist wholesaler in Berlin, is their Biopolar salmon, supplied by Marine Harvest, Ireland. This salmon farm and processing plant has its headquarters in rinmore, Ballylar, Northern Ireland, and operates six organic aquaculture farms in the Atlantic. In a recent assessment carried out by Ökofrost, they rank among the best with respect to ecology, animal welfare and transparency. The overall grade of “good” stems from the fact that they still have room for improvement in the social sphere. Contact: Anke Frenzel, [email protected]

MArKET NEWS Naturland Partners at the Biofach 2016

New chocolate bars In 2011, GEPA launched the first entirely fair trade whole milk chocolate ever. Now two new organic, fair trade wholemilk chocolate bars are to complement the range of this fair trade pioneer, a Naturland partner of long standing: Sweet & Creamy Caramel and Bio Fairetta Kokos. Both carry the Naturland Fair logo, and link the global north and south: the fair trade ingredients are not only the cocoa and sugar from the southern hemisphere but also the organic milk supplied by the dairy Milchwerke Berchtesgadener land. Contact: GEPA-Zentrale, [email protected] Delicious parbaked bread The Maya and Aztecs were the first to appreciate the qualities of the chia seed. Modern science proves them right, because this rediscovered grain is rich in omega-3 fatty acids. Besides this, it has a pleasantly nutty taste, as proven by the new chia bread made by herzgerber bäckerei. This long-life, CO2-packed product consists of three-stage natural rye sourdough, is lavishly strewn with seeds and can be finished off in a jiffy in the customer’s own oven. Contact: Katrin Bartik-Langer, [email protected] Bavaria’s best Alpine brand At the International Green Week in Berlin, Bavaria’s minister for agriculture, presented awards for the best organic produce in 2016. Archehof Schlickenrieder from Otterfing, Bavar-ia, won the accolade in the gold category for its excellent apple brandy. This digestif is distilled from old apple varieties which are grown locally and organically. The jury was further impressed by the particular commitment of this Naturland Fair partner to organic and social ideals. Contact: Georg Schlickenrieder, [email protected] Award-winning chef to cook at the Biofach The jury was also impressed by the product Chiemgau risotto with Bavarian fish, which is certified to the Naturland Fair standards, and which is one of Bavaria’s best organic products in 2016. Konrad Geiger was awarded the bronze medal for this product at the International Green Week in Berlin. As a top chef specialising in organic food and general manager of Bio-Kontor 7, he will be demonstrating his cooking skills for the second time at the Naturland booth and has compiled an appetising selection of dishes for his menu at the FairWöhnbar.
