    EXTENDED ABSTRACT

In Kabyle, a Berber dialect, there are two orientation particles, which are usually described as

indicating movement towards the speaker (D) or away from her/him (n).

However, when we analyse large corpora that are representative of the way people actually speak and

write, we are forced to make the following remarks :

    - particle D is much more frequent than particle n,

    - the use of those particles is not at all restricted to verbs indicating movement.

Our aim is to show that the use of particle D depends on various factors such as lexical and

grammatical aspect, assertive status of the utterance (modality for instance), and actant role.
