2016A chairde,

I am very pleased to welcome you to this first Lifelong Learning Festival in Midleton, a fantastic achievement, with a programme packed full with events that promotes Midleton as a learning town, and an inclusive

learning community.

this is a great source of pride to all of us involved in education, training and lifelong learning. It is also an important development to all who care about Midleton as a place to live, to learn, to work, raise a family, to do business, and to contribute to our shared future locally and globally. there are a wide variety of events represented both in Market Green and throughout the town including everything from archery, Cartoon demonstrations to Woodcarving in a Yurt and Beekeeping.

With its emphasis on celebration, the festival is breaking down barriers so that no longer is learning seen as something which only takes place in classrooms and is restricted to the young, but rather a process which happens in many different settings and throughout life.

the festival, as its motto says, encourages everyone to investigate, participate and celebrate the huge number of opportunities for learning offered across Midleton, whatever your age, ability or interest.

the learning activities represented in the programme are just a sample of those that take place throughout the year and throughout the town and surrounding areas, in settings across all the sectors, private, public, and community / voluntary.

at this time of year and in this significant year, it is appropriate for us all to learn more about ourselves, our past, present & future. I add the words used for the official commemoration of 1916 to our festival motto, to encourage us all as learners to:

remember, reflect, reimagine, and investigate, participate and, most importantly, celebrate!

My sincere thank you to everyone involved in organising the festival.

le gach dea-ghuí, Ted Owens

Chief executive, Cork education & training Board
