Reflection and Discussion

According to the Wisdom of Israel, God’s “imperishable spirit is in all things.” This means that God never gives up on any of us no matter the sin, no matter the challenge. Taking it one step further, if God doesn’t give up on us, then who are we that we should give up or quit trying ourselves?

§ Are there days that you lose sight of the larger purpose of your life? Even when your goals are clear, have you ever felt so tired of trying that you wanted to quit or walk away?

§ Have you ever encountered a difficult challenge, but dug in and kept on going until you succeeded or completed the task?

§ Have you ever experienced a time when the best last resort to turning something around required a change in your own thinking or attitude?

§ Have you ever tried to take a fresh look at yourself and see where a new approach could make all the difference in your own success?

§ Are you so comfortable in your ways that you never anticipate or expect a change or a challenge that may lead to self-improvement?

Jesus had dinner one time with Zacchaeus, a wealthy tax collector who was quite curious about Jesus, but had no evident reason to change his worldly ways. Zacchaeus, however, upon encountering Jesus had an open and new change of attitude about how he would live his life. Instead of continuing in his usual ways, Zacchaeus chose to spend half his resources on helping others who were poor. He also promised that he would give to those whom he had taken advantage, as much as four times what he had profited from them. Zacchaeus is a great example of how God’s imperishable spirit is within all of us, and that with a little curiosity and openness of mind, God can touch our hearts and enable us to turn our lives into something spiritually rewarding and purposeful.
