Table 5: Ancestry of Jeanne Le Marchand, Wife of Mathieu le Neuf,Sieur du H6risson, to Charlemagne

I. Jeanne Le Marchand and Mathieu Le Neui sieur du H6risson, married soon after the promise ofmarriage announcement. 5 December 1599, Protestant church of Caen (Calvados) [see tables 3 and41.

II. St6venotte de St Germain and Gervais Le Marchand. sieur de La Bellonidre. married by contractdated 2l April 1570 [see tables 3 and 4].

III. Olivier de St Germain, sieur du Post, and Frangoise de Breul, married around 1540 [see table 4].

IV. Frangois de St Germain, sieur du Post, and Hdldne de Corday, married around 1500/l 5 I 0 [see table41.

V. Olivier de St Germain, sieur du Post, and Jeanne de Rouelld, manied around \46011470 [see table41.

Vl. Jeanne de La Poterie and (Jean) de St-Germain, married around 1440/1450 [see table 4].

VII. Jean de La Poterie, seigneur de La Nocherie,r and Pierrette de Roussel, married around l4l0ll420

[La Roque, op. cit., book XI, pp. l178-1179] [Surville 1910, op. cit., p.232] [A. Surville,"Gen6afogie de la famille de Roussel," Le pays Bas-Normand, l" bulletin (l9ll): 9-l5l UeanDurand de Saint-Front, "Armorial," Le pays Bas-Normand. new series, no. 4 (1968): 40] [LaRoque. op. cil.. book XI . p. 1 1791.

VIII. Almaric de La Poterier and Philippote de Lignon, married around 1380/1390 fsurville 1910, op.cit., p.2321 [Jean Durand de Saint-Front, op. cit., p.40] [Abbd Gourdel, Le centre du Houlme( 1 9 0 5 ) . p . 2 l e l .

I La Nocherie. commune of St-Bdmer. canton of Domliont (Ome). On 28 January 1433. he obtained by letlers of

the king. "sufferance for one yeai' to show faith and homage due for the seigneurie of La Nocherie, "as it came and

fell to him as an inieritance ftom his deceased grandfather" [La Roque p. I179]. Consequently. even if the names

of the father and mother of Jean de La Poterie are un}nown, the lefiers of 1433, which speci! the mode of

devolution ofthe seigneurie ofLa Nocherie. fumish proofofhis ancestors. In addition, the names ofthe father and

the mother of Penette de Roussel are found in Surville: she would be the daughter of Juliot de Roussel, sieur de

Breel. and of Charlone du Moustier fSurvil le l9ll, p. 1l]. However, according to Durand de Saint-Front, the

genealogy of Roussel published by Surville "mixes with no proof [the Roussels of Sr-B6mer] with the Roussels of

the County of Mortain [and] with the Rousees de La Nocherie. [...] This genealogy has to be completely re-

verif ied. Drior to 1450."

I There is no proofofthe father and mother ofJean de La Poterie (generation VII); only the ancestors can be traced,

as mentioned in the previous note. Nevertheless. it could be Almaric de La Poterie, husband of Philippote de

Perrette Rous6e, dame de La Nocherier and Jean de La Poterie.j married around 1350/1160[Surville 1910. op. cit., pp.23l-232] [A. Surville, "Histoire f6odale de Saint-B6mer," Le pays Bas-Normand.2"d bulletin (l9ll): 88-891 fPaul LePortier. "La famille de Vassy," Hdrildique etgini al ogie. no. I 42 (January-March I 997): 28-3 l, p. 29).

Jeanne de Vassyt and Robert Rousde,6 seigneur de La Nocherie, married around 1330 [Surville1910. op. cit., pp. 230-2311 [Durand de Saint-Front, op. cit., p.40] [LePortier 1997 , op. cit., p. 29f[Compldments aux quartiers des enfants de Pierre Favier." Revue gdndalogique normande, no.63(July-September 1997): 325-33 I , p. 3281.

Isabelle Tesson and Roland III de Vassy, seigneur de La For6t-Auvray, manied before the feast ofSt-Maur l3l2 [LePortier 1997, op- cit., p.29) ["Complements ...," op. cit., p.328] [La Chenaye-Desbois and Badier. op. clr.. vol. XIX. "Vassy." p. 5261.

Jean II Tesson, seigneur de Subligny, and Thomasse N..., married around 1280/1290 [LePortrer1997. op. cit., p.291 ["Complements ...," op. cit., p. 328] [La Chenaye-Desbois and Badier, op.cjr.. vol. XlX. "Vassy," p. 5261.

Jean I Tesson, seigneur de Subligny, and N..., married around 125011260 ["Complements ...,", op.cir.. p. 32E1.

Lignon. married before 22 January 1397, date when she shared with her elder sister. Colette. the inheritance oftheirfather. Olivier de Lignon [document reported by Abb€ Gourdel]. This paternity is likely. as it would explain howthe seigneurie of Lignon and the given name of Olivier fell into the patrimony of the St-Germain family. As amatter of fact. La Roque writes that "the seigneurie of Lignon to which succeeded the house of Sainte-Marie,followed by that of [the house of] La Potede, and finally the seigneurs of St-Germain-Langot. was formerlypossesed by those lthe seigneurs] of Lignon." However, he does not explicitly affirm that the St-Germains aredescendants of Olivier de Lignon.

r The proofofthe father and mother of Perrette Rousde is found in the fact that she inherited La Nocherie, the sameseigneurie inherited. in tum. by her grandson, Jean de La Poterie (generation VII). In fact, on 22 June 1404, "Jehande La Poterie. esquire. seigneur de La Nocherie. because of Perrette Rousde. his wife" renders an aven of the fief ofLa Nocherie to the Count ofAlenqon [Survil le l9l l. p. 88]. The name ofthe mother of Perrette Rousde is found inLePortier 1997.

' The name ofthe father ofJean de La Poterie is found in Surville: he is the son of Mathieu de La Poterie [Survillel9l0l, without a doubt the one mentioned by La Roque (see the note concerning the patemity of Olivier de St-Germain. generation V).

j According to Dumnd de Saint-Front, the name of the father of Jeanne de Vassy would be Guyon de Vassy.

seigneur de Ia Foret-Auvray. ln contrast. according to LePortier 1997 and the "Complements ...." the names ofthefather and the mother of Jeanne de Vassy would instead be Roland III de Vassy, seigneur de la ForCt-Auvray. andlsabelle Tesson. Just the same. all are in agreement on the approximate year ofher marriage to Robert Rousde:around 1i30. ln facl. the three genealogists get their information fiom the same source: a genealogical manuscriptabout the Vassy family preserved at the Archives departementales de la Manche, the author of which is Durand deSaint-Front [sic] who affirms that Jeanne de Vassy. spouse of Roben Rousee. is the rrirer. and not the daughter, ofCuyot de Vassy. lt appears that Durand de Saint-Fronr may have been the victim ofan unfortunate distraction whiledrafting the notice conceming the Rousde family in his armorial.

u The names ofthe father and mother ofRoben Rousee are unknown. However. at least. we know that he was rneseigneur de La Nocherie between 1346 and 1375. dates ofdocuments in which he appeared in this capaciry.

-For A-merican readers perhaps an explanation ofthe fascination in Sissi among French-Canadians is necessary. The

life of Empress Elizabeth of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, who was nicknamed Sissi, was portrayed in amovie tri logy staring Romy Schneider ("Sissi." 1955: "Sissi-Die junge Kaiserin," 1956; and .,sissi-Schicksalsjahre einer Kaiserin." 1957). Though made in German. a version with French subtitles was DoDular inQudbec.
