The Epiphany of the Lord January 7th, 2018

Feast of Epiphany

On this Feast, the Church re-calls Jesus Christ’s epiphany, or manifestation, to the Gen-tiles, represented by the Magi or the three kings. The Epipha-ny hints at an important truth, namely, God excludes no one from His plan of salvation. The risen Lord ordered the Apostles to go and “make disciples of all nations” (Mt 28:19). And Saint Paul declares that the Gentiles are “coheirs”, “members of the same body, and copartners in the promise in Christ Jesus through the Gospel” (Eph 3:6). The family of Christ, the Church, takes in all people: it is, in a word, catholic, universal.

The true significance of this feast is the journeying of humani-ty toward Christ, through whom and for whom all things were created (Col 1:16). It should stir us to become more involved in leading others to the Lord. Firstly, we ourselves must be-lieve that Jesus Christ is “the way and the truth and the life” (Jn 14:6). This has been the Church’s faith from the start. To hear it and to accept it in faith is to be evangelized; to tell others about it is to evangelize. The celebration of Epiphany is a symbol for our pilgrimage through life to Christ. The feast invites us to see ourselves as images of the Magi, a people on a journey to Christ.

The Gospel story also tells us of the Magi’s encounter with the evil King Herod. This encounter symbolizes three reactions to Jesus’ birth: hatred, indifference, and adoration. A group of people headed by Herod planned to destroy Jesus. Another group, composed of priests and scribes, ignored Jesus. The members of a third group, shepherds and the Magi , adored Jesus and offered themselves to Him. Let us make sure that we belong to the third group. Like the Magi, let us offer Jesus our gifts on this feast of Epiphany: gifts of friendship with God, gifts of friendship with others, gifts of reconciliation and gifts of peace. Then having worshipped him let us take on a different route or direction in our lives.

“Wise men still Seek him.” Matthew 2:1-12

“Los sabios todavía lo buscan.” Mateo 2:1-12
