Hebrews 4:12 states it this way, “For the word of God is living and active”. This means that if we apply (obey) God’s life giving principles then our lives will become like a well of water that is overflowing…and “well” enough for others to drink from. One such principle that the Holy Spirit has impressed upon me of late is the principle of cultivating a tight-knit community. When God designed the church He did so with the vision of: 1) believers enjoying being together, 2) delighting in doing life together and 3) embracing the challenge of being on mission together. There are many benefits of being a part of a life-giving community, including the creation of a place of refuge for its members from the world’s weekly troubles as well as being an attractive haven of peace to its surrounding community if it can gain such a positive reputation (it would be arguably hard for a church to convince the outside world of its need for the peace of Christ if the members are known to be at war with one other). A verse that God had stand out to me (come alive) in recent days was 1 Thessalonians 2:8 which says, “…because we loved you so much, we were delighted to share with you not only the gospel of God but our lives as well.” Paul says he loved the people (church) at Thessalonica “so much”. Paul didn’t just love these believers a little bit, but a lot! Paul also says here that he not only enjoyed sharing the gospel with them, but that he loved doing life with them (“share…our lives”). Paul was trying to cultivate a tight-knit community! I shared this verse with our staff and explained that my goal at Parkway has always been not to create a bunch of religious professionals, but instead, to cultivate a family of God that enjoys being in close relationships with one another. One of the ways togetherness is fostered though is through “love-risk-taking”. What do I mean by that? Being VULNERABLE. Vulnerability is an exercise in openness. Being vulnerable means letting your guard down, and allowing others to truly get to know who you really areand it means risk. Truly loving somebody though is NOT POSSIBLE without being vulnerable. Intimacy and close connections are not built nor possible without becoming vulnerable. Being engaged with and immersed into another person’s life is not possible without becoming vulnerable. Brene Brown, author of Daring Greatly: How the Courage to Be Vulnerable Transforms the Way We Live, Love, Parent, and Lead, says “vulnerability is the birthplace of love, belonging, joy, courage, empathy, accountability, and authenticity. If we want greater clarity in our purpose…and more meaningful spiritual lives, vulnerability is the path…I define vulnerability as uncertainty, risk, and emotional exposure. With that definition in mind, let’s think about love.” We have to allow ourselves to become “weak” if we are to become “stronger” as a unit.

PASTOR KEVIN’S WELL OF LIVING WATER:

BEING A TIGHT-KNIT COMMUNITY

The Bible is the living Word of God because it contains life giving principals from the “living God”. A verse that God had stand out to me (come alive) in recent days was 1 Thessalonians 2:8 which says, “…because

we loved you so much, we were delighted to share with you not only the gospel of God but our lives as well.” Paul says he loved the people (church) at Thessalonica “so much”. Research shows that families, schools, organizations and faith communities that foster vulnerability and transparency are more effective, healthier and more enjoyable to be a part of. One of the ways an organization or family can thrive through vulnerability is when the leadership or parents promote and encourage feedback from its members. Why? Because at the heart of the feedback process is vulnerability. A quick syllogism is in order here to recap: God wants His church to be “tight-knit”.

Being “tight-knit” requires vulnerability (an openness to sharing our lives)

The Apostle Paul was “tight-knit” with the Thessalonians.

Therefore, the Apostle Paul learned to become vulnerable.

Until next time, do the 1 Thessalonians 5:11 thing: “Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just

as in fact you are doing.”

Easter! Resurrection Sunday! We invite you to offer praise and thanksgiving as we celebrate our Lord’s glorious victory over death, hell and the grave! Cries of “Hallelujah, He is risen!” will ring within the walls of our sanctuary, as we lift our voices to sing of our Redeemer and conquering King. Yes, Hallelujah! He is risen! But before God’s awesome display of resurrection power raised Christ from the dead, the Savior had to walk that long, lonely road leading to Calvary. It is on that dark and dangerous road, through a journey of sorrow and suffering that Christ willingly went to the cross. There He died for our sins, paying the ultimate price for our redemption. Come celebrate with us

Susan’s Scribbles

The evening of the day that Margaret was born, things were settling down for the night at the hospital. All my visitors had gone home and I was taking Margaret back to the nursery in hopes of getting a few hours of uninterrupted sleep before she needed to be fed again. As I was walking down the hall, a group of hospital personnel were rushing another patient somewhere—they just took the bed and pushed it quickly down the hall. Something had gone terribly wrong with this new mother. Moments later, as I was returning to my room I saw the patient’s husband coming back from getting something to eat. He walked into his wife’s room with his bag of fast food and she wasn’t there. He looked so bewildered. I don’t know the end of the story. I only know my reaction. My first thought was I’ve got to get my baby and get out of here before something bad happens to us. Even then I realized that this thought was completely irrational, because if something bad was going to happen to me the best place to be would be the hospital. Yet somewhere in me was the need to escape the place that reminded me that things do sometimes go wrong. The church is like a spiritual hospital. When things go wrong it is the best place to be. Jesus made this connection. When He was criticized for eating with tax collectors and other sinners, Jesus said in Luke 5:31-32 “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.” Yet very often when bad things happen, the first thing people do is distance themselves from the church and their church family. Instead of relying on their church family to help in times of crisis, sometimes people just withdraw and no longer come to church. The church should be the place where people can receive help, support and comfort. It should be a place that welcomes the grieving, the frightened, the hurt and broken. If our church is to serve as a spiritual hospital, we need to understand that we are to welcome those who are facing all kinds of challenges. We are pretty good at offering support for some types of struggles, but Jesus offered his help and comfort even to those that the religious leaders thought were too far gone. Jesus calls us to be willing to help all kinds of people—regardless of their particular challenges. Let’s turn Parkway into a spiritual hospital where people are eager to come to seek help instead of a place they withdraw from when they have spiritual needs.

Share the Change Campaign

We hope you have been filling your baby bottle with change to support the Greensboro Pregnancy Care Center. (If you haven’t picked up a bottle to fill, there are plenty on the Missions Table.) If your bottle isn’t

full, never mind! Cash and checks are welcomed too! If you write a check, make it out to Greensboro Pregnancy Care Center. Don’t forget to bring your bottle to church by Sunday, March 5. It would be really

helpful if you would count the change and write the total on a slip of paper and include it in the bottle! Put it in the box on the missions table or turn it in to the office.

Week of Prayer for North American Missions and the Annie Armstrong Easter Offering:

This year, the theme is “On Mission, Here & Now”. The call for believers is the same today as it was then: Love God, love others and share the good news – right here, right now. We have the opportunity to be the

hands and feet of Jesus, taking love throughout the continent and shining light into dark places. We can do this by praying for the lost, giving to gospel ministries, witnessing to those around us, and

reaching out in compassion.

Video clips will be shown during the morning services leading up to Easter. Prayer guides will be included in the bulletins. Please pray for the missionaries featured each day of the Week of Prayer. They represent the

work of all the North American Mission Board’s missionaries. Pray too, concerning your contribution to the Annie Armstrong Easter Offering. Our church goal is $3,000. The Annie Armstrong Ingathering is slated for April 30. AAEO envelopes will be included with the regular offering envelopes being mailed to members and

additional envelopes can be found in the back of the pews for your convenience. Please make out checks to Parkway and write “Annie Armstrong” or “AAEO” on the memo line.

Prayer & Ministry Group

The March meeting of the Prayer & Ministry group will be at 10:45 am on March 22 in the Conference

Room. Ladies, please bring $1.00 for the Rohingya Project (2) 15 oz. can of chili, Brunswick stew or beef stew and (3) 15-16 oz. cans of tomatoes for Urban Ministries. Lunch will be provided by Liz Kimbro’s

group. Our ministry project this month will be for the Homebound.

NEW PRAYER GATHERING STARTING UP!!!

Starting On MARCH 18TH we will be launching a new prayer gathering for any member or friends of members of Parkway to come together and simply pray during the hour of 2 -3 pm in the Sanctuary.

In Matthew 21:13 Jesus said, “My house will be called a house of prayer.” This is a great opportunity for all of our members at Parkway to: 1) come together and seek God and His vision together, 2) bring us as members

closer together and strengthen unity, 3) pray for God’s movement, power and glory to be manifested in His house at all gatherings, 4) pray for the lost and surrounding neighborhoods and 5) for strongholds to be broken over the

lives of people and much more…

Dear Members of Parkway,

I want to thank you all for your cards, visits, thoughts and prayers during my surgeries on January 17th & 18th. I felt the prayers, and they certainly helped me get through this ordeal. Pastor Kevin was so good to call and visit me in the hospital, despite the terrible roads. Darlene Daniel (my deacon) and her yoke partner Bobby took such good care of me with their calls, concern, food and visit. Tom and Sharon Smith and Barbara Seay, from my Sunday School class, were also so supportive in visiting and bring food to Cyndy and I. All of this was appreciated so much! Parkway is a loving family we are glad to be part of! In Christian love, Bill Davis

Return Service Requested

The Old and the New

The year is past and all mistakes should be sealed and put away. Everyone should do their best to bring about a better day. It is only through the forgiving heart that we can close the erring door. When it’s closed, we should forget and open it no more. The year is past. We should not mourn nor should we cry for yesterday. A world of tears cannot erase, can’t wash one sin away. Nor can they change those yesterdays into a bright or new tomorrow, But we can change ourselves, and then bring joy where we brought sorrow. The new is here. The old is gone. Those good old days we can’t relive. What is tomorrow we do not know but we can pray and we can give. And when another year appears, if we have done our best, We can look back at yesterday, old days of happiness.
