Moving from Mexico City to Thunder Bay Ontario at the age of 15 was a big change for musician Tom Landa, who founded The Paperboys 20 years ago and most recently the Latin group, Locarno.

“I moved from a city of 26 million people to a town of 113,000,” he said, “and I moved at the beginning of Febru-ary, so the beginning of their winter. It was a huge culture shock and a change for me for sure.”

Anderson is an advocate for the freedom and safety of animals and is passionate about the protection of wilderness areas, having used his photography and field work to help protect ecologically sensitive areas.

Anderson has been working out of “stu-dio-trailer” since 2008 (with stints to his home in Alberta) and is currently based in Nanoose Bay.

Although sometimes he calls his obses-sion with painting and perfecting his pieces “a curse”, he thrives when painting late or taking

his camera out for a day of shooting. Some days he’ll start at 5 a.m. and at 11 p.m. he’s still got the camera in his hands and he hasn’t eaten anything. But he doesn’t mind.

“It’s awesome. And to be able to do this… I’m the luckiest bugger there is. You’ve gotta be lucky to be cursed.”

Find some of Anderson’s work at the Gallery @ Qualicum Art Supply located at 206 West First Avenue. For more on the artist and to see samples of his work visit robert100.photogra-phy.com.

Accomplished local musician Chris Raines is introducing Monday Night Blues Jams at the MAC.

MONDAY NIGHT JAM

Blues Nights at the MACSpecial guest, house band and the opportunity to playLISSA [email protected]

Music enthusiasts can start looking forward to Mondays.

Accomplished musician and board mem-ber on the Oceanside Community Arts Council (OCAC), Chris Raines, is organizing Blues Nights at the McMillan Arts Centre (The MAC) and the first one will take place Jan. 28.

“Lots of people like the blues, lots of people like to listen and dance to it, and I’ve played it all my life, so I thought why don’t we start that,” he said.

Raines has put together a house band called The Blues Beat with some experienced musi-cians who will play a set and then assist other players as they get up to jam. As a veteran in the music industry—with his own recording studio in Parksville—Raines has many connections with other accomplished musicians on the Is-land and off, and will have special guests at the Monday night jams.

A good part of the proceeds for the night will benefit the OCAC, even if some nights they need to move to a bigger venue. The OCAC is a non-profit, registered charity with a mission to

“engage, energize, educate and enrich the cul-tural life of the Oceanside Community.”

Raines said it will also be a great way to nur-ture and develop interest in blues music for all ages, including young and aspiring musicians, and a great time for those that like to play and also listen to that genre of music. There will be many offshoots coming out of the event includ-ing programs on how to mix music, Raines said.

Long & McQuade will provide all the musical gear for the jams and Raines will be bringing his recording and television resources to the event, and plans to broadcast the event on the web in the near future.

The jams run from 7 to 10 p.m. every Monday, but a pre-jam social will run from 5 to 7 p.m., where blues fans can chat about music and gear with musicians. Snacks, beer and wine will be available and tickets are $15 at Cranky Dog Mu-sic in Parksville or at the door.

There is no cover charge for musicians play-ing and it is an adult only event. For more info and to hear practice tracks visit www.raines-broadcasting.tv or visit the Raines Broadcasting Facebook Page. To pre-book a two-song spot at a jam email [email protected].

Spring of things left unsaid

Until I was eight, I thought all girls were yucky! That changed in Grade 4 when I first beheld Jo-Anne Cut-ter (all names have been changed) the sweetest and most beautiful

creature I’d ever seen. Unfortunately, she didn’t know I was alive.

My chance to remedy that came in November. The teacher an-nounced we were doing a scene from Julius Caesar as a class play. My destiny had arrived! Who bet-ter than me to play Marc Antony to Jo-Anne’s Cleopatra? Sadly, the teacher had other ideas. I was giv-en the role of ‘Roman soldier.’

Not easily discouraged, I de-cided to impress Jo-Anne with my costume. I could only imagine her stunned reaction when I appeared at school the spitting image of Charlton Heston in Ben Hur.

The play was Tuesday morning. Not one to procrastinate, I started working on my costume Monday night.

“Mom, can I have a Roman army outfit?”She looked at me like I was from Mars.I needed a sword, tunic, breastplate, helmet

and knee socks. I checked my closet. Five min-utes later I was done. The next morning I wore my costume under my winter coat.

Mike, whose family had moved to Toronto from Italy, met me at the door. “Hey, Ray. Do you know you’ve got an Italian nose?”

“I do?” I replied patting my prominent pro-boscis.

“Sure. It’s roamin’ all over your face. Get it? Roman?” Everyone laughed. Luckily, Jo-Anne didn’t hear.

Soon it was time to unveil my costume. I’m sure the ancient Romans would be surprised to discover that the Hespeler hockey stick com-pany manufactured their swords and their sol-

diers wore flip-flops, Maple Leaf hockey socks and fishing hats for helmets. The teacher gave me an F. My friend Dan’s sister helped him with his costume. He entered brandishing a broom handle, wearing her kilt for a tunic and panty-hose for leggings. There was a stunned silence. Then several boys started laughing. Neverthe-

less, the teacher gave him an A, though I expect he got it for ‘sheer’ bravery.

Jo-Anne wore a lovely toga her mother helped her make. She was elegant and perfect. But I was too shy to tell her. My next chance to impress the fair Jo-Anne was on Valentine’s Day. I tried to write at least a dozen cards expressing my love, but they all sounded mushy. In the end, I was too embarrassed to give her a Valentine. All the other

boys did. Well, all except Dan.When spring came, Jo-Anne took matters

into her own hands. One recess, she asked if I liked tennis. “I’ve never played,” I stammered.

At quarter to four she arrived at my house wearing tennis whites and a dazzling smile. If there was ever a moment to tell her what was on my heart, it was then. But words again failed me.

Jo-Anne gave me a racquet. “Did you know at the start of the game they call it love?” I sud-denly lost the ability to speak. “Do you like kiss-es?”

“You bet,” I eventually blurted out.“Really?” she asked. “Would you like one

now?”“Sure. I love Hershey’s kisses. But Hershey

bars are good too.” She took back the racquet and headed home.

Girls are hard to understand!Reflecting back, it’s not my failures I regret.

It’s the times I was too afraid to try. It’s a lesson I’ve remembered since the spring of things I left unsaid.

NEIL HORNER PHOTO

Ken Kirkby is taking a sabbat-ical from the Nile Creek Enhancement Society.

FISH HABITAT

Salmon habitat successSo Nile Creek Society’s Ken Kirkby moves to phase twoNEIL [email protected]

The salmon are back in abundance in Nile Creek, so Ken Kirkby is moving on — but he’s not going far.

The former head of the Nile Creek En-hancement Society said his job is done as far as phase one of the project — restoring the creek to salmon-bearing health — so it’s time for him to move on to phase two.

“Nile Creek is restored,” he said. “I fin-ished phase one when I took over Nile Creek, which was to restore the system completely, so we ended up with a completely docu-mented, restored environment, fish and all. Phase two is to take all that documentation and take it to various media, including a ma-jor film and a major publication.”

That publication, he said, will be a cof-fee table book that involves mostly art and a few key phrases on each page that will show, step by step, how Nile Creek was re-stored and how other streams can similarly be brought back to health.

“It’s not an academic thing, but strictly for the public,” Kirkby said. “There will be almost no words, but it will be simple and graphically pleasing and compelling, each page a masterpiece. It will tell the whole story of how everything was done, so when you’ve finished reading the book you will have a recipe of how to do all of it, not just the technical stuff, but also the media and the politics.”

In order to focus on the documentation of what the group has done, Kirkby said he has to pull back from his involvement in the group.

“I decided I should do that on my own,” he said. “Its art, not science, and art is my life, so I am no longer the president of Nile Creek, anymore, I am not on the board and I am not a member. I’m not running away, but I’m going to take a long sab-batical and while I make this. I will find the money and make this a work of art.”

The multimedia project, he said, will be translated into many different languages, so people around the globe who are faced with degraded fish-bearing streams will be able to take advan-tage of the Nile Creek group’s experience.

“Each area of the world will have dis-tinct needs, but the principles and the ways behind it are all the same e v e r y -w h e r e ,” he said.
