From the Assistant City Manager:

The Moore Parks & Recreation Department takes great pleasure in

presenting to you the Moore Parks and Recreation 2016 Spring-

Summer Activity & Events Guide. You will find it a valuable resource

for planning some fun in the coming months. Activites abound

within the pages of this guide.

This guide details our parks, programming, and events for the

Spring and Summer 2016. We have a great year of activities,

events, and programming planned for 2016. With the weather

warming up there are a great many things to do at your favorite

park, trail, or playground. Take advantage of the great park system

we are fortunate to have. 2016 is going to be a great year because

of the many new things we have for our community. The most

exciting of these is the opening of The Station this Spring! Activities

and events taking place at Central Park, the new recreation center

and aquatic center (The Station) are included in this Guide.

On November 6, 2012 the citizens of Moore approved two

propositions that are funding significant improvements and

upgrades to our parks and facilities. The propositions were called

the Our Parks…Our Future program. We strongly believe that our

parks are our future. They add quality to our lives and play a critical

role in the fabric of our community. We are in the midst of making

many of those improvements. Over the next 5-7 years we will

invest over $34 million of voter-approved tax dollars in our park

system. Page 8 has information on some of the improvements

we are working on. In fact the largest park, Central Park, is under

construction at the present time with an opening expected this

Spring. This destination park will be home to a new recreation

center, aquatic center, amphitheater, multi-purpose pavilion-

farmers market, a multi-purpose trail, and this areas only fully

accessible playground. We feel that once the Our Parks…Our

Future projects are completed we will have one of the best park

systems in Oklahoma!

New to this year’s Guide is a section dedicated to Central Park and

the many activities and events taking place in the park. This section

has details on planned programming, fee and pass information, and

events that will take place at The Station and Central Park. We are

excited to open Central Park and The Station. We look forward to

seeing you there! As our motto states “Come for Fitness and Stay

for Fun!”

As always, let us know how we are doing! Please feel free to call

or email us and let us know how we can improve service to the

community. You are always welcome to contact me at tjenson@

cityofmoore.com or at (405) 793-5090. Also, please visit www.

cityofmoore.com/fun to see a complete list of our activities,

programs, and events. You can register online for many of the

programs at that address as well. If you want to find out information

about Central Park and/or The Station please visit www.

cityofmoore.com/centralpark.

I hope you will take time to enjoy one or more of the programs or

parks available to you and your family. There is always something

fun at Moore Parks and Recreation.

Amphitheater: This image is of the new amphitheater at Central Park. The amphitheater features a covered stage and will have permanent seating for about 350 people with space to accommodate 1,000 more people.

Gym/Walking Track: The image above is of the walking track and gym area in The Station at Central Park. The Station is a 53,000sf recreation center that will include 2 full-size basketball courts, two meeting rooms, a multi-purpose room, child watch room, concession area, an elevated walking track, fitness area, two dance and fitness rooms, and administrative offices for the Parks staff. The expected opening is early 2016. Incorporated into the architecture is a railroad theme. You will note the large arching windows in areas, the station platform along the east front of the building, and the tall tower which many railroad stations had. The tall tower will include the name Moore into it.

Moore’s Brand Senior Citizen Center is located at 501 E. Main. Activities at the Center include cards, dominoes, quilting, billiards, ceramics, art lessons, woodcarving, and various crafts. There are also programs on nutrition as well as health checks for hearing, blood pressure, and blood and sugar screenings. Legal aid representatives and speakers from other professional groups speak to our seniors. Aging Services Inc., operates a congregate meal program at the Center as well.

A transportation bus owned and operated by the Moore Council on Aging (MCOA) provides rides for senior citizens from their addresses in the Moore city limits to the Center. This service also serves seniors with transportation to banks, stores, the library, doctor’s offices, and other places within the city.

In 1977, a group of senior citizens incorporated under the name of the Moore Council on Aging (MCOA), and began meeting in a converted dwelling owned by the City of Moore. As the group grew in numbers, they were able to obtain the use of a larger facility owned by a private corporation.

The Council on Aging began a project to raise funds for a new facility. Land was donated to the MCOA for the project, and the MCOA and the City of Moore worked together to meet qualifications for a grant. In 1993, sufficient funds had been raised for the MCOA’s portion of the project cost; title of the property was transferred to the City, and construction begun.

Brand Senior Center

On February 22, 1994, the MCOA moved into its new quarters. Under an agreement with the City, the MCOA is the principal user of the facility, which is owned and maintained by the City of Moore. In 2013 approximately 2,250 square feet was added to the center. The expansion included rooms for billiards, dominoes, quilting and a computer room. The expansion was partially funded by the 1/4 cent sales tax approved by the voters of Moore in 2012.
