  • Featured Interview

Thong Chow NgianAvid nature painter and NParks volunteer

Chow Ngian is a wildlife artist who hopes to showcase and create awareness of the vast variety of beautiful birds found in urbanised Singapore. He held his first solo painting exhibition entitled ‘Singapore Wildlife’ at The Substation Gallery in May 2017, and conducted the ‘Sketching and Watercolour Painting of Birds’ workshop, under nAtuRe connecTion, held in conjunction with Pesta Ubin 2018. His sketch of a Black Baza (Aviceda leuphotes) from the workshop is featured in this booklet on the cover of the Arts & Culture section!

Is painting an in-born talent or can anyone learn to paint like you?

Painting is a skill that can be learned. It requires the patience to observe details, to have some basic drawing techniques and the determination to keep trying and learning from successes and mistakes.

What do you do with your artwork?

I have a passion for wildlife painting and would like to see this genre of art being appreciated more widely in Singapore. I hope to continue exhibiting and selling my artwork, and would like to educate others through my paintings that we have many beautiful, interesting birds and other wildlife.

For example, my painting entitled ‘Insatiable Hunger’ highlights a lesser-known natural phenomenon called 'brood parasitism', where brood parasites manipulate the host into raising its young instead of their own. Illustrated in the painting is the brood parasitic relationship between the Ashy Tailorbird (Orthotomus ruficeps) and the juvenile Plaintive Cuckoo (Cacomantis merulinus).

What is the painting process like? How do you prepare for it?

I always begin by thinking of a story line or message that I want to convey to the audience before I start painting. This includes research on the bird species (such as their behaviours and habitats) that I intend to paint, making preliminary sketches, preparing the canvas, actual painting and evaluating the outcome before putting in the final touches. One of Chow Ngian's paintings entited 'Insatiable Hunger'.

    Featured Interview

Sandra Eu Li QingRegular supporter of the NParks Concert Series in the Park: Rockestra®.

Since attending the SG50 Concert Series in the Park in 2015, Sandra has become a regular supporter of the NParks Concert Series in the Park: Rockestra®, together with her tightly-knit group of friends that she has known for over 23 years!

Who is your favourite local artist or band?

    Definitely The Sam Willows.

How many editions of Rockestra® have you attended?

Too many that I’ve lost count! I started attending the SG50 Concert Series in the Park in 2015 and have been a regular supporter since then.

Which is your favourite genre for Rockestra®? Retro, contemporary hits or mando/cantopop?

    Contemporary hits.

What other concerts or productions do you attend?

I attend local plays and musicals but absolutely love stand-up comedies, including open mic sessions.

How does Rockestra® compare to those?

At Rockestra®, you get the best of both worlds: You get to chill and sing along to the music while in between sets you have humorous emcees who interact and engage with the audience. Not forgetting the casual and relaxing atmosphere where my friends and I can have a picnic on the grass.

Who do you hope to see perform in future editions of Rockestra®? (local artistes only please)

There are many talents in Singapore and I hope to discover more of these aspiring local musicians, especially those busking on the streets. The father and son duo busking in Tampines and Ken Loh on Orchard Road would be great additions to the lineup. Bands that write their own music such as The Sam Willows and Disco Hue should be featured too!

What other things do you hope to see or do at future editions of Rockestra®?

Having a good emcee is important as he/she will set the mood and entertain concert-goers in between sets. Towards the end of the show, getting people to stand and dance along always finishes the night on a high note.

    Featured Interview

Carrie-Ann Lee and Brendan BockMother-son pair who are regular participants of NParks activitiesAs a regular participant of NParks activities, Carrie-Ann decided to sign her son Brendan up for workshops to expose him to the outdoors. To date, he has participated in over 15 children’s workshops at the Singapore Botanic Gardens. The staff even know him by name!

Who first told you about these workshops/tours?

I got to know about these workshops from the NParks’ website – I have always wanted to expose my son to the outdoors and jumped at the opportunity when I knew that NParks conducts workshops suitable for kids in his age group. He has been attending these workshops since he was 5 years old, and he’s 8 now.

Was there any "resistance" from Brendan initially?

None at all! I even invited his friends and cousins to join in for some of the workshops.

What keeps you coming back for more?

There are several different workshops with varied themes, and that keeps us coming back almost every school holiday! I also found that he learns something new from these workshops.

Do you attend other NParks’ activities? Which ones?

My husband and I once attended a terrarium-making workshop together and I have personally attended other activities such as the ‘Race Against Time – Science Behind a Botanic Garden Tour’ and ‘Nature Sketching in the Gardens’.

Share an interesting story when participating in our programmes!

One of the most interesting workshops I attended was organised in conjunction with World Wetlands Day 2018. My son and I were at the Singapore Botanic Gardens’ Learning Forest learning more about dragonflies – it was interesting because the children were given nets to try to catch some dragonflies (and releasing them after, of course), so we were able to observe the dragonflies and damselflies up close. The kids were having so much fun!

The West Marsh, within the Core Conservation area of Kranji Marshes, is a special area designated for the conservation of the marsh birds. To minimise disturbances to these shy animals and other wildlife, access to this section is restricted to guided activities organised by NParks volunteers (the "Kranji Marshals"). The guides will be stationed at the hides and strategic locations to help you appreciate the beauty of the marsh habitat.

Registration is not required. You can enter and exit the West Marsh from the gate near Moorhen Blind.

A loop around West Marsh is about 1.2 km and takes about 20 minutes to complete. This includes about 400 m of narrow and uneven rocky path, which is not recommended for young children without supervision. Visitors are advised to wear comfortable walking shoes, and exercise caution when walking on this path.

To minimise disturbances to this ecologically-sensitive area, please do your part by not organising group visits of more than 20 participants. If the West Marsh is too crowded, the entrance of visitors into the West Marsh will be regulated accordingly.

Families for Nature is an initiative which encourages families to experience nature and learn more about Singapore's biodiversity through exciting events and activities organised under the National Parks Board's Community in Nature (CIN) programme.

Take part in activities organised throughout the year with your family! These activities fall into four categories – Nature Adventurer, Wildlife Guardian, CIN Ambassador and SGBioAtlas Contributor.

Participate in all four types of activities and collect unique stamps and puzzle pieces. Upon completion of each activity, you will also receive one of four puzzle pieces. Collect all four pieces to form a map featuring Singapore's rich biodiversity.
