A Message from Our CEO:For 30 Years, Parker Has Led by Faith

Page 2

We’re dedicating this issue of CareLines to one ofCaldwell Hospice’s best friends and strongest advocates, retiring Board of Directors President Parker Williamson.

Parker was among the small group of committed citizenswho imagined a Caldwell Hospice, very early in the1980s. He remembers the struggles in the early years, when the strong motivation to provide quality end-of-lifecare required even stronger planning to offset scarcemoney.

Parker leads by faith. He knows how to inspire andencourage employees, board members, and volunteers

to keep working, believing, and planning—even in thehardest times. Two clearexamples involve our twopatient care units (PCUs).The Stevens PCU atKirkwood was the first of itskind in North Carolina, soRaleigh legislators had to beeducated and convinced toapprove it. Planning and theland purchase for theForlines PCU at the RobbinsCenter was begun in 2008,during a very difficulteconomic time in this countyand in the entire country.

Each time, Parker believed we could accomplish our goal;each time, he was right!

When the late John Forlines created the Caldwell HospiceFoundation to ensure that we would have enough moneyto provide quality end-of-life care, regardless of patients’ability to pay, Parker was there to serve on the Board.Currently, he is the Board’s president.

Parker has been the only president of Caldwell Hospice’sBoard of Directors these 30 years—an almost unheard-ofdisplay of dedication, perseverance, and determination. In all these decades, he has attended every major

Caldwell Hospice event. In appreciation for all hehas done for and meantto Caldwell Hospice,Parker has been namedBoard PresidentEmeritus.

I was hired by CaldwellHospice August 1, 1988,as a medical socialworker. Not quite 18 months later, I began serving asthis organization’s executive director. Throughout all

these years, I’ve beenprivileged to work withParker, and he hasmade it easier for meto do my job. He hastruly been “the windbeneath my wings.” Ihave a high level oftrust and faith inParker because I havealways known wherehe stood—solidlybehind me and thishospice.

Parker says he and Dr. Robert Belk plan to finish refittingthe sail boat they co-own, so they can set sail. I feelcertain that theseCaldwell Hospicepioneers will be closeby when we needtheir expertise—andwe will try hard not tocall on either of themtoo often. Thank you,Parker, for everythingyou have done for Caldwell Hospice.

Parker Williamson Reaffirms Our Mission:

Casting a Net for Caldwell Hospice’s FutureFrom its inception, our hospice has been “outfront.” We set our sails as one of the first hospicesin North Carolina, and our “Kirkwood” six-bedinpatient unit was the first of its kind in the state. So it’s not unusual for us to look ahead. What dowe envision just over that horizon?

Change is coming, stormy change. Next to theeconomy, the single-most discussed subject amongpoliticians and prognosticators is health care.Medicare managers are in our future, and whereMedicare goes, Big Blue (Blue Cross Blue Shield)and others are close behind. We will seek safepassage through reefs of regulation.

This is more than a money matter. It really goes to the heart of who we are. We Americans are, after all, human, not divine. We were born withlimits. There are some things that doctors cannotdo, some pains that won’t quit, no matter howmuch money we throw at them. Promise-making

politicians must face that reality, and so must we.That’s what palliative care is all about, learning tolive within limits, including that final one, which, ofcourse, is death.

So what does the future hold for us? I suspectwe’re in for a strong dose of realism, fewer magicpills and exotic procedures that cost money anddon’t work, more emphasis on how to live well anddie well … how to be human.

And here’s the promise that Caldwell Hospice andPalliative Care makes to those whose seas becomestormy, a promise we’ve delivered from the verybeginning: We will be here for you. Our focus is notprimarily on government or regulation or money ormagic. We are looking at you and the Lord who solovingly made you. So we’ll help you fix what canbe fixed, and we’ll help you live with what cannotbe fixed. And when the storm has passed, we’ll helpyou find that distant shore. —Parker Williamson

The 10th anniversary edition of Kirkwood Carelines is dedicated with muchlove and appreciation to Parker T. Williamson, whose vision, determination, and faith played a vital role in the establishment of Caldwell CountyHospice. Parker has served as president of the Hospice Board of Directorssince its inception..., a position he still holds today. Thank you, Parker, forthe 10 years of love and dedication you have so freely given to CaldwellCounty Hospice. “This one’s for you.” —quoted from Spring 1992

Isn’t It Time We Talk? The Importance of Completing Advance Directives

What should our family do when we are unable tomake our end-of-life decisions for ourselves? It’s atopic that many of us put off as long as possible—and sometimes we wait too long, leaving ourfamilies to make decisions in a crisis situation, while hoping they’re doing what we would wantthem to do.

When you fill out a Living Will, you are tellingyour family and health care providers the medicalprocedures and treatments you want to haveprovided for you and under what conditions. Youare making the decisions regarding life-support,artificial nutrition, artificial hydration, what towithhold or withdraw and when.

By completing a Health Care Power of Attorney, you choose someone you trust to take charge ofyour health care decisions in case you are unableto make those decisions for yourself. Choosesomeone—a family member or a friend—who iscomfortable talking to doctors and who you cantrust to follow your wishes, even if that persondisagrees with your wishes. Be sure to talk withthat person before completing the form. Once youhave both forms notarized, they become legal

documents. You, then, need to make copies for anddistribute them to every person who needs to knowyour wishes: your physician, family members, yourHealth Care Agent, and yourself. Keep your copiesin an easy-to-reach place—not in a safety-depositbox at the bank!

Completing advance directives is your choice. Ifyou become unable to make decisions for yourselfand you have no advance directive, your physicianwill consult with someone close to you about yourcare. If you discuss your wishes with your familyand friends now, while you are able, you help toensure that you receive the level of treatment youwant at a time when you can no longer communi-cate your wishes to a physician or health careprovider.

To get copies of advance directive forms:

• Come to Caldwell Hospice’s Lenoir office, 902Kirkwood Street, NW;

• Go online to www.caringinfo.org

• Go online to www.secretary.state.nc.us/ahcdr orcall 919.807.2167.

Well-deserved Recognition:

Parker Receives Prestigious Award

September 14, 1992, an evening to remember! Asseveral Hospice staff members and Board ofDirector Member Houston Groome finished dinnerat the Hospice of North Carolina Fall Conferencebanquet in Raleigh, there seemed a special aura ofexcitement among us. Our own Parker T.Williamson, CCH President for 10 years, had beenselected to receive the...1992 Peter Keese Award, given annually by Hospice of North Carolina to aperson who exemplifies, promotes, and hasimpacted hospice care statewide. The award isnamed in honor of the founder and first presidentof Hospice of North Carolina.Following the keynote address by Peter Keese,Parker, with wife Patty by his side, was called toaccept the award. For all who know Parker, you canimagine how he captivated the several hundredattendees through his acceptance speech as heparalleled the Hospice movement to the wild west. (Only Parker could bring such an analogy to life.)How fortunate we are and how very proud we feelto have Parker T. Williamson in our hospice family.

Parker Explains Hospice Care:In Changing Times, Hospice Is Still Personal

“In a depersonalized time, when persons often findthemselves reduced to digits on some distantcomputer screen, Caldwell County Hospice insistson offering a ‘special way of caring.’ We know eachpatient and each patient’s loved ones by name. Wewouldn’t have it any other way. Thank you,Caldwell County, for allowing us to be here for youfor the past 15 years.”

—Parker Williamson, 1997, as Caldwell County Hospice celebrated its 15th anniversary

“We have needed more space for some time, and we arethankful to be able to address that need now. For years,we have not had a room large enough for our entire staffto gather for meetings and training. We are especiallypleased with the addition of a chapel, which will givefamilies and loved ones a place to go for spiritual reflec-tion and meditation. The patient care unit will remain openduring construction, which is expected to take about sixmonths.” —Parker Williamson, 2001, as construction

began on 4,000 sq. ft. addition at Kirkwood

“If we are to know love, we are to do loving things, and that’s the essence of hospice. It is a personalact of loving, of committing our lives to oneanother whatever befalls us.”

—Parker Williamson, June 20, 1995, Caldwell County Hospice annual meeting

“It’s one human being who is willing to takethe hand of another human being and walktogether through a very personal, intensemoment on the edge between life anddeath.” —Parker Williamson, June 1996,
