CITY OF WATERNew Orleans Civic Plaza

New Orleans has a long history with water, for many years the city has built walls to keep the water out, but what if we embraced it? Let that water into the city and use it to our advantage?

The building creates a visual and physical connection between City Hall and the New Orleans Public Library, creating a main promenade through the site. The ground floor has been carved out to allow for this visual connection between these two nodes, further integrating the project.

My proposal for the re-design of the New Orleans civic plaza strives to create a grand monumental civic enclosure that is easily accesible and perforated, which showcases the new attitude of the city towards water. The site is designed to handle a massive amount of water from the streets and surrounding buildings in the plaza, this water is fi ltered in the buildings fl ooded lobby space and cascades down a large terraced water feature where it is eventually either returned to the groundwater or released into the proposed canal system.

The building is designed to be as energy effi cient as possible. Voids cut into the structure allow for natural ventialtion via the stack effect. The nar-row building forms also allow for cross ventilation through the spaces.

The Flooded Lobby where the water filtration process begins. The lobby appears to be floating on the water and occupants have an opportunity to see the water filtration process at work.

VIA GIULIA MUSEUMROME 2014

The Via Giulia Museum is located on a site containing the ruins of Trajan’s Stables, my proposal preserves these ruins and creates a highly contextual yet contemporary intervention. The buildings closes off the site, creating an interior piaza very charecteristic of the city, with the outer edges being more classical in styling and the interior edges being more contemporary, maintaining the historical feel from the street

The project was designed with three diagramatic concepts in mind - Flow, Regulate, and Perforate. Flow in and out of the site, continuing the axis set by the bridge. Regulating the facades and remaining consistent and contextual, and finally Perforating these facades making acess into and out of the piaza clear and easy.

The travertine facade design is very contextually driven as well, the grid is emphasized through meticulously regulated perofrations sitting above massive arched colonades, giving the building a monolithic presence. The arches create a very open and airy ground level, allowing easy access in and out of the inner court.

TANZAKADEMIENOLA Dance Academy

Tanzakademie is a dance academy and studio for the city of New Orleans, the program included several dance studios and a large performance theatre. My buidling form was derived by maximizing possible square footage and creating a large elevated public outdoor space on the 4th floor with panoramic views of the entire city

All of this was done within the boundaries of a solar study which informed the large cantilever above the outdoor space as well as the metal louver sun shade system. These louvers give movement and life to the facade, their shape and form informed by abstracting famous dance patterns.

The building features a number of repeating elements, the most notable being the idea of folding. These folds carry in from the outer facade and create dynamic natural lighting on the interior spaces. The large lobby atrium is fl ooded with natural light and can be experienced from almost all the public spaces in the project.

Above is a rendering of the covered rooftop terrace overlooking the city of New Orleans. You can see some of these voids in the floor which funnel light into important transiotion spaces on the lower floors. The most prominent floods the main performance stage with light if required or wanted for a performance.

MODEL MAKINGVarious Projects

Model making has always been a passion of mine, I pride myself on well crafted and detailed three dimensional models. Physical models can provide such a thorough understanding of the project, both spatially and conceptually.
