HERE’S THE EDITORIAL -

OH WELLINGTON, IS WONDERFULWellington ootball is tiny. It’s like a wee amily. It has its

tantrums and its arguments, its love/hate relationships and its

tensions, as well as its riendships and bonds. It has drama, but

it has real community spirit.

The community’s true colours have never been more evident

than ollowing Dave Capstick’s horror injury or Whares two

weeks ago. News spread like wildre o Cappy’s injury against

Island Bay, Facebook was awash with concern, Park Lie’s call

centre was going crazy as people text messaged and phoned toget an update. The reerees on the day were badly aected.

Because in our little town, in ootball, we all know each other,

and while we might throw the odd bobsled, give a bit o needle,

poke un at each other on Yellow Fever’s orums, and generally

bicker and b*tch, when it counts, we are a community. One that

cares about its ellows.

It’s pretty neat!

Dave is now recovering at home and acing months o work.

Mike Greene and the Whares are organising a Casino Night

and Memorabilia Auction at Four Kings to raise some unds to

help the Capstick Family through this dicult time (See Ad

on page 9). Cappy is sel employed, and has a wie and young

daughter.

For those who don’t know him, Dave is you, yes you readingthis, or the guy next to you. He’s a young guy and a great bloke

with a wie and amily who has played ootball all his lie. He

isn’t a superstar or anything, he’s just a good club bloke. Then

one day a reak accident happens in a game and his whole lie is

fipped. He can’t work, and him and his amily have a long road

ahead o them. It’s horrible, and it could be any one o us.

PARKY’S PREMIER PREVIEWAs it is almost a third o the way through the Football Central Capital

Premier League, Parky thought it was about time he previewed/reviewed

the league containing the club who will roll Maycenvale in the Big Travelpromotion playo. I there is one. Nobody actually knows.

Much like the ater (and pre) match unctions at Karori in Marty van

Hattum’s days the 2011 edition o Cap Premier has already thrown up

(get it?) some surprises.

Newly promoted Olympic’s ressies have started unbeaten and sit on

top, while last seaosn’s contenders, Waterslide Karori are at the oot o

the table with zero points and just a single goal rom 4 games (althoughremarkably they are still playing on Karori Park 1). With another loss to

the Greeks this weekend, we will ocially dub them the New Titanic.

Apart rom Karori’s slump, perhaps the other surprise so ar has been the

resurgence o Island Bay. With Tony Jamison now completing the ull set

o Wellington ootball clubs, the IBU Sharks are just 4 points o top and

still have their abandoned game against the Whar to play. It remains to

be seen whether they can kick on to be genuine title contender or remain

a mid-table mediocrity team along with Miramar, Marist and perennial

team stackers Wests. We predict the latter.

With the top 5 teams each playing against a bottom 5 team, we’re

struggling to pick a game o the round. Wellington United hosting Stop

Out will do because it allows us to rehash tired old cash-lled-boot gags.

With just 2 wins rom their rst 5 games, the dirty Stop Outs walk o

shame down to Newtown to ace third placed United. United have had

just one slip up so ar, thanks to a massive goalkeeping howler, and are

likely to need to dip into last weekend’s quiz night undraising kitty

to pay out the win bonuses post game. Keep an eye out or Ken Allenperorming the role o Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.

This weekend in the FOOTBALL CENTRAL PREMIER LEAGUE:

Wellington United (3rd) vs Stop Out (6th) Newtown 1 (2.30);

Wainuiomata (9th) vs Miramar Rangers (5th) Prouse 1 (2.30);

Upper Hutt City (2nd) vs Marist (7th) Harcourt 1 (2.30);

Olympic (1st) vs Waterside Karori (10th) Te Whaea (11.30);

Western Suburbs (8th) vs Island Bay United (4th) Endeavour 1 (2pm)

FEJOS’S FUTSAL FACTSBy Matt Fejos @ Capital City Futsal

A new season o Futsal is starting with U13s at Thorndon on Fridays, and Newtown in Tuesdays. These are games against other school or

club teams with the opportunity or the more competitive to go to the

National Youth Tournament in Napier in the July school holidays. The

overall emphasis is on un and skill development. An U16 league will

run on Thursdays ater school at Newtown. Register asap at utsal.net.

nz i you want to be part o it.

The upward trend in Futsal playing numbers is set to accelerate with

the base o the new Wellington Community Indoor Sports Centre onCobham Drive rom August. A range o tournaments will be hosted

through August and October rom social to competitive, children to

adults, girls and women and a Futsal Cup o Nations. Leagues starting

late October (Term 4). The 12 court purpose built venue provides the

ideal platorm to take the game to new levels, similar to overseas where

it is a proessional sport in many countries. 12 courts are split into two

halves o six, with a spine down the middle with a mezzanine viewing

platorm. Full acilities rom changing rooms to oces are provided.

Check in to futsal.net.nz or follow Capital City Futsal on Facebook for

more information on dates and registration for tournaments.

Wellington’s National Futsal League team came second to an Australian

club team ater three rounds o competitive utsal over three weekends

in Wellington, Dunedin and Auckland, nishing in March. The touring

Maccabi club showed the level in Australia and what we can aspire

to. Three members o our squad - David Ploright (unattached), Enrico

Meirelles (Olympic) and Tariq Assad (Marist) have all made the NZ

Futsal Whites team. They travel to Fiji later this month to competein the Oceania Championships, the winner o which qualies or the

FIFA Futsal World Cup in Thailand 2012. We wish the NZ team and our

Wellington players well over there. Wellington conrmed our position

as pacesetters pushing the level o Futsal in NZ with Wellington

High runners up to champions Onslow College in the recent College

Nationals in Auckland.

BITS AND PIECES -

DOING THE MID-SEASON SHUFFLEIt happens about now every year. Some players realise they aren't

starting or aren't playing rst team, some coaches realise their squad

isn't strong enough, some clubs have lousy early results and some clubs

have good results and try to push a bit harder.

It all leads to one thing, a mid-season shufe o players.

Players coming in or who have just arrived: Sam Blackburn arrives rom

Alabama to play or Stop Out, Wests duo o Englishmen, both recently

o Woking FC arrived and played last Sunday, Christchurch keeper Mike

O'Keee heads to Miramar, Caleb McFarlane joins his brother at Whares,

and Leighton Arraj has let Petone or Lower Hutt (nally).

HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL KICK OFFWith the start o Term 2 comes the start o High School ootball. Run by

College Sport Wellington, 1st XI ootball is not always the highest quality,

but is always hotly contested.

The rst round is a grading round and the two pools are chalk andcheese. Wellington College and St Pat's (Town) head a group o death

alongside Paraparaumu, HIBS, Onslow and HVHS while over in the other

pool St Pat's (Silverstream) should win at a canter up against Rongotai,

Wellington High, Kapiti, Scots and Tawa.

The top three from each pool make up the College Premier division

after round one.

MID-SEASON PROMOTION AND

RELEGATION FOR SOCIAL GRADESIn Capital 12 and below this year there is a promotion/relegation round at

the end o Round 1. Teams nishing in the bottom two o Cap 12 will go

down, and the top two Cap 13 sides will come up. Added incentive or a

strong nish to the dry hal o the season!

CENTRAL LEAGUE TIGHTER THAN A

DUCK’S A**HOLEIt’s very tight at the top o the Big Travel League, with the top ve teams

separated by only ve points -

P W D L GF GA PTs

Wairarapa Utd 6 5 0 1 15 6 15

Miramar Rangers 6 3 3 0 9 3 12

Western Suburbs 6 4 0 2 12 9 12

Olympic 6 3 1 2 18 12 10

Lower Hutt City 6 3 1 2 8 6 10

At the other end, Petone and Tawa look sae already while Maycenvale,

Napier and Palmerston North Marist all look in danger. Much will hinge

on this Sunday’s match between Maycenvale and Napier in the Battle o

the Bay. The loser could be in dire straights (not the band).

Game o the round is at Bell Park in Lower Hutt on Saturday as Hutt take

on Olympic. Hutt has a bunch o ormer Bubbles playing or them, so

expect the souvlaki to fy. Olympic could pull clear and create a top our

with a win.

For the rst time this year there’s automatic relegation rom Central

League.
