The first Wood Freeman House (referring to the first of two residences constructed by the Searcy builder Wood Freeman to be included in this nomination) is a single story, wood frarne Enghsh Revival residence. Its plan is fundamentally T-shaped, a fact reflected by the perpendicular gable roof elements. An exterior chimney stands to the west of the gable roof entrance porch and another interior chimney rises though the ridge of the rear intersecting gabIe roof component of the house. Both are constructed of coral. The roof is covered wilh campasition shingles, the walls are faced with cord 'Ymddzrs" and decorated with limestone quoins at the corners, and the house rests upon a continuous stone foundation.

The southern or front elevation features a tall gable to the east, a shorter, projecting gable roof entrance porch with abutting exterior chimney in the center, and the side wall of the front gable component to the west. The eastem gable displays a stuccoed pediment which is blank except for a rectangular, louvered, central woad vent. The wall klow is fenestrated with a pair of six-over-one wood sash window. In the center, the gable roof entrance porch features an entrance arch built of limestone and decorated with a projecting keystone and projecting springers. A new single-pane glass door fills the wall entry. The adjoining chimney is ornamented with a single limestone offset, coped with limestone and capped with a metal chimney cap. The wall to the west is relieved only by a single-pane arched winduw.

The western elevation js dominated by the two projecting gable ends which flank the side wall of the intersecting rear gable. The soulhem gable end features a stuccoed pediment with a central vent and is fenestrated with a central gmup of three six-over-one wood sash windows. The wall between the gable ends is fenestrated by a pair of six-over-one wood sash windows, and the rear gable end features a stuccoed pediment also and a single six-over-one wood sash window to the north, and a smaller six-over-one wood sash window to fie south The elevation is finished by a later flush plank, shed roof addition which is relieved ody by an entry on this elevation.

The northern elevation is composed of the recent shed addition to the west and an original gable roof wing to the east. Thm wood sash windows light the shed addition and a central pair of six-aver-one wood sash windows light the gable roof wing.

The eastern elevation features a pair of six-over-one wood sash windows in the side of the gable roof rear wing and two pair of six-over-one wood sash flanking a single six-over-one wood sash window in the main wall of the house.

The First Wood Freeman House is intact and virtually unaltered except for the rear shed addition.

A gable roof, frame cabiwgarage building to the rear of the house, also faced with coral, in included in the nomination. Both structures m in excellent condition.

Signi f cance Criterion C, local significance

The First Wood Freeman House (Part E, Historic Context #4) is not only an excellent example of English Revival style and composition but is also a unique example of early hyentieth-century craftsmanship and innovation. Wood Freeman was a contractor who reportedly constructed this building as an advertisement to rhe community of the economy and beauty of facing a house with coral instead of genuine stone. He intended rhis building to be a "show" house and a public demonsttation to cautious Depression-em homeowners of the practicality and durability of what must surely have been considered an unfamiliar and exotic material.

The sophisticated use in the Fmt Wood Freeman House of such chasacteristicaUy English Revival elements as the hcturing of lthe wall plane, the assomnent of different cornice lines and the overall picturesque composition elevate this building to the best example of its architemral style in its neighborhood; howevcs, its unique craftsmanship and materials make it unique to the entire county.
