25th December, 2013Christmas Day

Pull up a chair. Take a taste. Come join us. Life is so endlessly delicious.”  ― Ruth Reichl

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

Simple joys, little pleasures, Laughter and smiles in big measures; Friends, family, togetherness, love...the choicest blessings from above: Peace, prosperity and happiness too...All these and more are my wishes for you! Merry Christmas! Happy New Year 2014!

This is my third Christmas celebration since I began my journey with you at St Madeleine’s in the capacity of your Priest. I would like to thank each and every one of you for your support in building up our community. Greatly I acknowledge the involvement of hundreds of people through various ministries in the integral growth of the parish. More people we need on board to be at the service of our big family of God. The Gala day, the visitation of our Bishop Anthony Fisher OP, the Silver Jubilee celebration of our parish, the First Mass of the newly ordained Priest John Paul and other significant events marked the history of our parish this year. God has wonderfully cemented the sense of community among us through the Sacramental, socio- cultural celebrations. In the year end Mass with St Madeleine’s Primary, I asked the year six graduates as to what they are taking with them from St Madeleine’s for their life. Love of learning, sports, friendship, trust, Jesus and Community are a few answers they gave. The sharing of these young lads indicates that it is an imperative on our part to build our community in all its aspects.   We need to encourage and empower them to be the catalysts of change and transformation founded on Faith in God, trust and hope.

It has been the passion of our parishioners to have a free standing church at Kenthurst. The parish has made significant headway during the year with this objective. Taking into account the pastoral needs of the parish, Bishop Anthony made an announcement during the silver jubilee Mass that we will have our church if we can work out the finances. Looking at various options to raise the revenue for the said purpose, the proposal of having a lawn cemetery was promising.  The positive developments regarding the lawn cemetery proposal, if finally approved, will go a long way towards firming up our finances for building our new church.

However, the parish needs your continuing support, through your prayers and financial assistance.   We expect to receive from Catholic Cemeteries, Rookwood early in the New Year an administration proposal concerning the lawn cemetery, following which the Finance Committee will review its financial merits.

We need to pay off the DDF loan on the church land which currently sits at $ 160, 000. One of the suggestions put to the Parish Council was to conduct a 300 Club during 2014 to help with this cause. You will be duly informed of the procedures in the coming year.

The parish plans to hold the County Fair on the First Sunday in May 2014, and a Parish Dinner Dance in the second half of the year most probably in November. Kindly mark these events in your diary and extend your generous assistance to realise our dream. Earnestly I ask for your support in all the undertakings of the parish.

Christmas is all about Love of God for the humanity. The angels brought the good news of ‘peace on earth’ to the impoverished sector of the then society. How wonderful our homes could be, how wonderful our lives could be, how wonderful our world could be, if we really did put into practice the blessing of "peace on earth, good will toward men."

And as Christmas comes, we think once again, "Maybe it’s not impossible. Maybe we really could have hearts filled with love. Maybe we really could be kind to each other, & not just once a year, but all year long.” Bethlehem, Mary, Joseph and Jesus… they all belong to us because we can identify ourselves in them. May all of that allow us to be at peace with ourselves… and between ourselves… and with God! Once again, together with Fr John Paul, Sr. Anna and the parish team, I wish you all Merry Christmas and a Happy 2014! Have safe holidays!

Fr. Vincent

For Prayer ReflectionIn New York City, on a cold day in December, a little boy, about 10-years-old, was standing before a shoe store on the roadway, barefooted, peering through the window, and shivering with cold. A lady approached the young boy and said, ‘my, but you’re in such deep thought staring in that window!’ ‘I was asking God to give me a pair of shoes,’ was the boy’s reply. The lady took him by the hand, went into the store, and asked the clerk to get half a dozen pairs of socks for the boy. She then asked if he could give her a basin of water and a towel. He quickly brought them to her. She took the little fellow to the back part of the store and, removing her gloves, knelt down, washed his little feet, and dried them with the towel. By this time, the clerk had returned with the socks. Placing a pair upon the boy’s feet, she purchased him a pair of shoes. She tied up the remaining pairs of socks and gave them to him. She patted him on the head and said, ‘No doubt, you will be more comfortable now.’ As she turned to go, the astonished kid caught her by the hand and looking up into her face, with tears in his eyes, asked her. ‘Are you God’? No, said the woman. I am only his child. The boy smiled and said. I knew it. You are some relation of his.

2013 Christmas Message from Most

Rev Anthony Fisher OPBishop of Parramatta

At Christmas we adore the Baby Jesus lying in the manger and enthroned in His mother’s arms. We celebrate the Word of God in human flesh, the Prince of Peace bringing God’s reconciliation to every man, woman and child. We are conscious that, like the Baby Jesus born in a stable, there are families who have lost their homes to the recent fires in the Blue Mountains region of the Diocese of Parramatta and elsewhere. I pray that this Christmas the Holy Family will be especially present to the victims of the fires and those who have worked to keep them safe.

We are also conscious that like the Baby Jesus forced into exile by the terrible King Herod, many people today suffer for their faith. The International Society of Human Rights reports that acts of religious discrimination are escalating worldwide and that eight out of 10 of these are directed against Christians.  Throughout the Middle East and parts of Africa and Asia, Christians face imprisonment, torture, forced labour, economic and other discrimination. ‘Religious cleansing’ is very real and over the past decade 100,000 Christians have been killed for their faith each year. That’s 11 Christians killed every hour of every day of every week of every year. And there can be ‘softer’ forms of discrimination against believers, even in countries like our own. The fact is: not everyone welcomes the Baby Jesus. At Christmas the king of the universe came as a baby not to conquer by fire or force but to win hearts and minds. We must be thankful for the freedom we have to celebrate Christmas and never forget those who are suffering.I pray that the Prince of Peace will bless you and your loved ones this Christmas and in the year ahead!
