Celebrating over a Century of Faith and Education

St. Barbara Parish is a Roman Catholic community celebrating a century of faith in the Bridgeport area. Our faith community welcomes all people, helping them grow spiritually through liturgy, prayer, and education, and socially through activities for all ages. Our school takes great pride in fostering these values in our children. We give witness to our faith by sharing with each other our God-given gifts and talents. We nourish and sustain our faith as a family by celebrating the sacraments and the presence of the risen Lord among us in the Eucharist.

WE WELCOME YOU Seeking a parish? A spiritual family? A place to pray, deepen your faith, or serve oth-ers?

If so, our hearts and doors are open to you! We thank God for sending you. Please introduce

yourself to either Fr. Arthur or Fr. Andrzej after Mass.

PEACE on EARTH!

Pray for the safety of the men and women of our

UNITED STATES ARMED FORCES protecting and serving the world over. May our world one day be at peace.

2019 Annual Catholic Appeal

“Come Follow Me...and share the Word” Please spend some time this week reflecting on the Annual Catholic Appeal brochure included in this week’s bulletin. The Annual Catholic Appeal is much different than a one-time special collection. It is a pledged campaign commitment where you can make a gift payable in installments. A pledge is a promise to make a gift over a span of time. Each pledge makes a difference because all parishes participate in the campaign and the gifts of many en-able our Archdiocese to deliver needed ministries and services to answer Jesus’ call to “Come Follow Me...and share the Word.” Once we reach our parish goal of $10,851.78 in paid pledges, 100% of any additional funds come back to our parish to help fund our needs. If you received your commitment card in the mail, we ask that you do not mail it, but bring it to Mass next weekend and drop it in the in-pew collection. Thank you for your prayerful consideration and gen-erous response.

ST. BARBARA/ST. THERESE MEET AND GREET

Fr. Arthur and Fr. Francis Li invite all interested par-ties to a Meet and Greet regarding learning more about our “sister” parishes. Please refer to the flyer included in last week’s bulle-tin for more information. (There are additional flyers on the table in back of church if you did not receive one.) If you are interested in attending the Meet and Greet at St. Therese Church on Tuesday, February 26th, at 6:00 pm, please remember to call the rectory office at (312) 842-7979 with a count of the people from your family attending.

OUR CARNIVAL The Carnival is a go!!! Only 4 months to go and we will turn our parish grounds

into an amusement park for the community. We promise to make it bigger and better but, to do that, we will need the help of our fellow parishioners. You may ask how you can help. Well, we’ll be look-ing for volunteers, sponsors, and supporters. We will be holding a meeting for all interested in planning the carnival in the next few weeks. So, mark your calendars for Father’s Day weekend, June 13th through June 16th. We will be having our outdoor Polka Mass on Sunday, June 16th, for the 11:30 am Mass. Wendy Kaput and Denise Holland

USHERS NEEDED! We are in desperate need of ushers. If you are in church and see that there are only one or two ushers, please volun-teer to help out.

Dear People of St. Barbara, Our human lives are divided into three stages. The first part of life is not very long. It lasts only nine months, from our conception until the date of birth. In this part of life, we depend completely on our mother. The second part of our life is the time when we live on this earth. That part is very important because we make decisions, make choices, and we decide what this life looks like. The third part of life depends on our faith. This is the part of life that is eternal. The second and third part of life are connected very strongly, because how we live our earthly life will affect our eternity. So how to live our earthly life? The Prophet Jeremiah in the first reading and Jesus Christ in the gospel are very clear about life. Jeremi-ah says that “the man who trusts in human beings and who seeks his strength in flesh is cursed. Blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord.” In the gospel, Jesus says exactly the same, but he is more specific. He says “blessed are the poor, hun-gry, weeping, and hated by others. But woe to peo-ple who are rich, who are filled and laugh, and those of whom everybody speaks well.” It doesn’t mean that we can’t be happy, or we can’t have some mate-rial goods or we can’t enjoy food, but we Christians should have a balance between what is the most im-portant. If in our lives only material things count and we only depend on human relation connections, it will not work toward our eternity. We have to learn how to give to God what belongs to God and give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar. At the end, let me give you an example. I have a friend whom I have known for 27 years. He is a me-chanic and he has a private garage. He never works on Sundays, except in cases of emergency – some-one is sick or dying and needs a car. There are some Church celebrations which are not obligatory; he doesn’t work on these days either. He always says, “When I give God my time, he gives me back.” And it really happens in his life. He built a beautiful house, raised three children and his wife doesn’t have to work. She takes care of a beautiful garden and a beautiful house.

We don’t have to be afraid to give God some of our life. It will always be rewarded, but the best and most beautiful reward is eternal life. It is not 60, 70 or 80 years on this earth, even though you are wealthy. Our reward is life eternal. It means to live happily forever. Fr. Andrzej
