Christmas 2009 Dear Parishioners,
As you view the familiar scene of Mary, Joseph, and the baby Jesus, it was St. Francis who popularized the manger scene that adorns our homes and places of worship. We are grateful to St. Francis who 786 years ago (1223) founded a little hermitage on a sheer wall of rock, using, as he habitually did, one of the caves supplied by nature, and transformed it into a chapel. At his request, a manger was installed and generously provided with straw. An ox and donkey, the witnesses demanded by tradition, followed.
During the night torches were lit, and the people from all around the region walked up through the trees, torches in hand, making the mountain paths surge like streams of light. A priest came to say Mass, which was celebrated over the manger, and Francis, wearing the dalmatic (outer liturgical garment worn by the deacon), proclaimed the Nativity Gospel. That was an eternal moment full of poetry that only Francis of Assisi could have discovered.
In the sentiments of peace and joy, I extend to each of you and your loved ones a most blessed Christmas. May the Prince of Peace be born anew in our hearts, and may His love find a home in the way we live each day.
Merry Christmas, Fr. Tony, The Parish Staff & Assisting Clergy

Christmas 2009 Dear Fr. Tony and Blessed Teresa Parishioners, Ciao from Italy! My second year at the North American College in Rome is going very quickly. This year I‟m serving the seminary community as a Sacristan, and continue to serve Rome‟s poor with the local St. Vincent de Paul group. My studies continue at the Gregorian University, a Jesuit-run theological school. This semester I‟m studying the Gospel of Mark, Ecclesiology, the Sacraments of Baptism, Holy Eucharist, and Confirmation, Canon Law and learning how to give meaningful homilies. About thirty of us are headed to the Holy Land for eleven days this Christmas for a retreat/pilgrimage; a great blessing indeed! It will be very meaningful exploring the places where Jesus walked among us as a man. Then, I am looking forward to returning home to Wisconsin this summer. It appears I will be doing hospital chaplaincy in the Appleton area, and then returning to Rome in September for Third Theology. Thank you for your continued prayers. I had the opportunity to visit the tomb of “Italy‟s favorite saint”, Padre Pio, and I asked his intercession for all of you while I was there. Peace to you and your families and a Blessed Christmas! Brian Romportl, Seminarian [email protected]
From Father Tony: Presently, several parish members have been trained as Companions of the Eucharist. They will assist me, as needed, in taking the Blessed Sacrament to the homebound, nursing facilities and hospitals. May I ask a favor? If you have any desire to receive the Eucharist for a family member, etc., please call Mary Jo Romportl, my administrative assistant, at 966-2191. Both she and I will schedule Eucharistic visits. Please do not call the parish nurse, the St. Vincent de Paul members or the Christian Concerns committee. All visits will be arranged through the parish office.
Thanks so much for your cooperation!

L ord, on this Christmas Day, in the midst of the joy of our
celebrations, help us recall what is truly important about this day. In the midst of opening gifts, help us remember the love that each gift represents. In the midst of Christmas dinner, help us remember that You are the source of all life. In the midst of family gatherings, help us remember that You are the fullness of all joy. And in the midst of Christmas Mass, help us remember the supreme act of love, sacrifice, and humility that we celebrate on this Christmas Day when you Son came as a helpless baby and grew to be the life and light of the world.
Amen.

Reception of Holy Communion For Catholic Christians, the reception of Holy Communion is a significant sign of the Church‟s unity in faith, life, and worship. While people of all faith traditions are welcome to the celebration of the Eucharist, Communion may only be received by Catholics in union with the Church. Those not receiving Holy Communion are encouraged to come forward with arms crossed over the chest, in order to receive a blessing, as we pray together: “That our common baptism and the action of the Holy Spirit in this Eucharist will draw us closer to one another and begin to dispel the sad divisions which separate us. We pray that these will lessen and finally disappear, in keeping with Christ‟s prayer for us „that they may all be one‟ (Jn17:21).”

How to Contact Our Troops for Christmas and Messages On Oct. 30, 2002, the Department of Defense (DoD) suspended the "Operation Dear Abby" and "Any Servicemember" mail programs due to force protection concerns. Unsolicited mail, packages and donations from organizations and individuals also compete for limited airlift space used to transport supplies, war-fighting material and mail from family and loved ones. DoD cannot support creative and well-intentioned efforts that defeat force protection measures, but can instead recommend alternatives to mail and donation programs. To show support to troops overseas, the following are recommended: 1. Log on to the following Web sites to show support, to include greeting cards, virtual Thank You cards and calling card donations to help troops stay in contact with loved ones:
http://www.ourmilitary.mil/Message.aspx?SectionID=5 http://www.usocares.org/ http://www.redcross.org/holidaymail.com 2. Visit Department of Veterans Affairs hospitals and nursing homes. Volunteer your services to honor veterans who served in past conflicts.
Thank you for supporting our troops!

Dear Father McCarthy: I thank you and the parish for welcoming a mission appeal this year. The primary purpose of the Missionary Cooperation Plan is to invite parishioners to continue the mission of Jesus. The missioner is given an opportunity to tell the story of how “The blind see, the lame walk and the oppressed are liberated”. Parishioners are then invited to express their solidarity with their sisters and brothers through prayer and financial support. Please extend our gratitude to your parish for their generous response of $5,143.25 to the Working Boys Center in Quito, Ecuador. All Peace and Good to You! Sr. Frances Cunningham, OSF
