Dear Friends,
The followers of Jesus were first called
Christians in Syrian Antioch by Latin speaking pagans,
and it was not a term of endearment. It could be likened
to something like “Christ-lackeys” according to one
author who says the term Christian was comparable to a
modern “four letter word,” a term of fierce ridicule. The
early followers were often mocked for their belief in
Jesus Christ and would suffer greatly from their fellow
Jews as well as those from other lands. In other words,
they were stuck between a rock and a hard place. None
of us like that experience!
Perhaps this is how many of us have been
feeling for the last ten weeks. So many rules and
regulations to adhere to, so much suffering by so many
people at one time without being able to alleviate or
even cure the situation is abhorrent to us. The feeling of
being hemmed in not only physically but emotionally
and spiritually has taken a toll on everyone. It is
important for us all to acknowledge that to our family or
friends. It is important to share how you are really
feeling and not saying everything is fine when it
isn’t. Mental health professionals will tell us that if we
stuff our feelings deep down and act as if we’re good
when we aren’t, it will all come back to bite us.
Let me suggest that you take a good look
around and make a list of what your blessings are and
then read them out loud! I know most folks won’t do
that, but you ought to!!! Why, because it does help to
put everything in an honest and positive perspective. It’s
been tough, to be sure. However, match it against other
world situations and other living conditions and you’ll
find we’re not so bad off. A friend of mine, who for the
past twenty-five years has been working to establish an
orphanage and music school for these children in his
native India, has seen much of his work wiped out by a
Cyclone this past week. He and his wife are grateful that
the children and staff are fine and they will just pick up
where they left off, so to speak. I have no complaints,
you?
You must know by now that we have resumed
masses in the parish! While it is a cause for celebration,
it is also tempered by the 91,000 plus people who have
lost their lives during this pandemic. It is tempered by
all the Health Care Professionals and First Responders
and Hospital Chaplains who experienced untold
suffering with their so-workers and patients. At some
point I will share with you my experiences of being the
“On Call Priest” these past ten weeks for the
Leominster/Fitchburg parishes. I have only glimpsed a
small fraction of what the others have seen, but I can
also tell you there was grace upon grace in it all!
I am so looking forward to seeing you
again. However, don’t rush yourself. If you are not
comfortable, if you are afraid or unsure what to do, wait,
just wait. You will know soon enough when you are
ready to return to mass. Our loving, patient and
merciful God is holding you and embracing you. Use
that comfort and consolation to guide your eventual
return to mass. Call me or someone else if you need
someone to just listen to you. The only real answer I
can offer to you now is to know that you are loved ever
so deeply and rest, trust, and rejoice!
Peace, Fr. Michael
Help us celebrate
Pentecost Sunday!
We are asking our young
disciples in grades K-5 to
color, paint, or draw a picture
for Pentecost Sunday,
May 31
st
.
An age appropriate video
about Pentecost along with a
link to coloring sheets has
been sent out via Flocknote. We ask that you mail
in or drop off your child’s artwork by Thursday,
May 28
th

everyone’s creations to decorate the altar for
Pentecost Sunday. We look forward to seeing the
children’s gifts of creativity as we celebrate the
birth of the church.
Pentecost Sunday celebrates the descent of the
Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and other followers
of Jesus and the birth of the Church.
