Dear Family of Faith, In this Year of Mercy, Pope Francis invites us “to become a more effective sign of the Father’s action in our lives.” One way to respond to that invitation is to practice the works of mercy. We are reminded that: “we are called to show mercy because mercy has first been shown to us.” Indeed, the source of mercy is God himself. Traditionally, Catholic teaching has categorized the works of mercy as corporal, those addressing physical and material needs, and Spiritual, those focusing on the spiritual and emotional needs of our neighbors. In day-to-day life, there isn’t such a well defined separation between corporal and spiritual works of mercy; surely the kindness that prompts us to offer a drink to the thirsty touches the other emotionally and spiritually as well. At the same time, comforting the afflicted might actually require us to take care of some physical or material need of our neighbor. For the next few weeks, I’d like to look at each of those works and use them as an examination of conscience.

–Fr. Rich Work of Mercy - Feed the Hungry The Widow of Zarephath (1Kings 17:7-8) For many people around the world, hunger is an ever-present reality of life. We don’t have to travel to Asia, Africa, or South America to find people who do not know from where the next meal will come. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, in 2014 members of 6.9 million households in the U.S. did not have adequate food at times. What can we do? • Make it a priority to not waste food; portion out smaller servings and be creative in using leftovers. • Get involved locally by donating to or volunteering at the local food bank or soup kitchen. Here at St. Johns’, non-perishable foods are collected every weekend for the Mohnton

Catholic Social Teaching on Hunger “Faced with a world today where so many people are suffering from want, the council asks individuals and governments to remember the saying of the Fathers: "Feed the people dying of hunger, because if you do not feed them you are killing them," and it urges them according to their ability to share and dispose of their goods to help others, above all by giving them aid which will enable them to help and develop themselves”. (Documents of the Second Vatican Council, Gaudium et Spes (1965), paragraph 69) “Jesus taught his disciples to pray by asking the Heavenly Father not for "my" but for "our" daily bread. Thus, he desired every person to feel co‐responsible for his brothers so that no one would want for what he needs in order to live. The earth's produce forms a gift which God has destined "for the entire human family”. (Pope Benedict XVI, Angelus, 12 November 2006) Pope Francis “A way has to be found to enable everyone to benefit from the fruits of the earth, and not simply to close the gap between the affluent and those who must be satisfied with the crumbs falling from the table, but above all to satisfy the demands of justice, fairness and respect for every human being”. (Pope Francis, Address to the Food and Agricultural Organization, June 20, 2013) Statistics About 795 million people of the 7.3 billion people in the world, or one in nine, were suffering from chronic undernourishment in 2014-2016. Almost all the hungry people, 780 million, live in developing countries, representing 12.9 percent, or one in eight, of the population of developing counties. There are 11 million people undernourished in developed countries (The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, December 2015) Each year since 2008, the number of food-insecure people in the United States has hovered between 48 million and 50 million, approximately one in six people in the country. Food insecurity increases, by nearly 50 percent, a person’s chances of becoming a high-cost user of healthcare. Last year hunger and food insecurity cost the U.S. $160 billion in health expenditures. (Bread for the World, July 2015)

FORTY DAYS OF PRAYER FOR LENT Fifth Week of Lent – Forty Prayers for Forty Days

Mar. 14 - Day 29 – To be far more loving. Jonathan Swift made this sad judgment: “We have just enough religion to make us hate, but not enough to make us love one another.” Prayer: Dear God, Help me to love everyone and show that all are included in your love. Scripture: 1 Pt 4:8. Mar. 15 - Day 30 – For patience in suffering. St. Ignatius of Loyola made this interesting observation which can be a guide during challenging times: “If God sends you many sufferings, it is a sign that he has great plans for you and certainly wants to make you a saint.” Prayer: Dear God, let me bear troubles and traumas with patience and with trust in you. Scripture: Prv 3:5. Mar. 16 - Day 31 – To resist temptation. Temptation is not a sin; it’s a call to battle. Prayer: Dear God, grant me the grace to resist the worldly temptations of materialism, commercialism and greed. Scripture: Jas 1:14. Mar. 17 - Day 32 – For perseverance in good works. “No act of kindness, however small, is ever wasted,” wrote Aesop. Prayer: Dear God, protect me from discouragement as I serve others in your name. Scripture: Gal 6:9. Mar. 18 - Day 33 – To be a mirror. Father Edward Hays reminds people to “simply be the mirror in which others can see themselves as God sees them.” Prayer: Dear God, may I reflect back to people, their own essential desire to love, to care and be kind. Scripture: 1 Thes. 5:11. Mar. 19 - Day 34 – For an open heart. God sends no one away empty except those who are full of themselves. Prayer: Dear God, let me have an open and receptive heart. Scripture: Eph 1:18.

PARISH ADVOCATE CONFERENCE 2016 “ ENRICHING LIVES THROUGH MINISTRY”

How persons with disabilities inspire us, each other, and those touched by their spirituality. The 2016 Ministry with Persons with Disabilities Conference for all Parish Advocates will be held on Saturday, April 23, 2016 at St. Mary Parish Religious Education building, Kutztown. Registration and light refreshments begin at 8:30am and the Welcome and Opening Prayer will be at 9:00. The morning will conclude around noon. All advocates are strongly urged to attend. (If they are unable to do so a representative should be sent in their place). This is often the only time during the year we are able to meet with advocates in person to provide direction and catch up with the latest news and developments. Our evaluations last year suggested that people in ministry in the church want to share how their ministry with persons with disabilities (PWD) has enriched their lives. For that reason the emphasis this year is on “Enriching Lives Through Ministry” There will be three speakers sharing how the lives of persons with disabilities have been enriched through their participation in ministries in their church. Also, how the lives of those who advocate for PWD have been enriched by helping them participate and how the parish community is enriched by experiencing the involvement of PWD in

FIFHT WEEK OF LENT Work of Mercy - Instruct the Ignorant

“One does not live by bread alone.” (Mat. 4:4) Education is often the key that unlocks the prison cell of poverty, whether we talk

about mastering reading, writing, and math skills, or about faith. Spiritual poverty is soul-crushing, because it diminishes the religious imagination, which is necessary for living in Christian hope. In what ways do you instruct others? Our parish and Diocese offers many opportunities such as volunteering as a catechist or RCIA sponsor. Helping our youth through the CYO and it’s many facets. Get involved in our parish Youth Ministry with our teens. If teaching isn’t your personal calling, how might you still support education efforts in our parish or community? La Salle Academy would be more than willing to find a place or a way for you to help by your financial support.

POPE FRANCIS'S PRAYER TO END HUNGER O God, you entrusted to us the fruits of all creation so that we might care for the earth and be nourished with its bounty. You sent us your Son to share our very flesh and blood and to teach us your Law of Love. Through His death and Resurrection we have been formed into one human family. Jesus showed great concern for those who had no food – even transforming five loaves and two fish into a banquet that served five thousand and many more. We come before you, O God, conscious of our faults and failures, but full of hope, to share food with all members in this global family. Through your wisdom, inspire leaders of government and of business, as well as all the world's citizens, to find just, and charitable solutions to end hunger by assuring that all people enjoy the right to food. Thus we pray, O God, that when we present ourselves for Divine Judgment, we can proclaim ourselves as "One Human Family" with "Food for All".
