On Palm Sunday, we commemorate how Jesus Himself “went up” to Jerusalem. Like many pilgrims, He had been making His way to Jerusalem for the feast of Passover. FROM THE PASTORDear Friends in Christ,

Two Sundays ago, the first reading at Mass told the Israelites to prepare to “go up” to the holy city of Jerusalem. On Palm Sunday, we commemorate how Jesus Himself “went up” to Jerusalem. Like many pilgrims, He had been making His way to Jerusalem for the feast of Passover. Unlike the rest of the pilgrims, He understood that something was going to happen to Him at Passover that would not happen to any of the thousands of other people who had made the same journey: He would be lifted up on the cross. He Himself would become the Pasch, the Passover lamb. As we enter into the mysteries of Holy Week, each of us is offered the opportunity to make this pilgrimage along with Jesus in order to be lifted up along with Him. In Jerusalem, said Pope Benedict XVI, “the Lord Jesus will renew the greatest gift we could possibly imagine: he will give us his life, his body and his blood, his love. But we must respond worthily to so great a gift, that is to say, with the gift of ourselves, our time, our prayer, our entering into a profound communion of love with Christ who suffered, died and rose for us. The early Church Fathers saw a symbol of all this in the gesture of the people who followed Jesus on his entry into Jerusalem, the gesture of spreading out their coats before the Lord. Children in grades 3 through 8 are invited to sing with the St. Mary Children’s Choir for the celebration of First Holy Communion on Saturday, April 28. We will practice in the Choir Loft on Wednesday evenings, April 4 through April 25, from 5:00-5:45 p.m. While attendance at all rehearsals is not mandatory, it is important to attend as many as possible in order to become familiar with the music and with singing together. SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM

In order to understand and better appreciate this special sacrament, parents must attend a Pre-Baptismal class. St. Mary offers this instruction four times a year on the second Sunday of the month from 2:00-4:30 p.m. in the Commons. Preregistration for the class is required. Baptisms are celebrated on Sundays of the month immediately following the 11:00 a.m. Mass. LENTEN REGULATIONS ON FASTING AND ABSTINENCE~ Abstinence from meat is observed by all Catholics 14 years and older on Good Friday.

~ Fasting is observed on Good Friday by all Catholics who are 18 years of age but not yet 59. Those bound by this rule may take only one full meal. Two smaller meals are permitted as necessary to maintain strength according to one’s needs, but eating between meals is not permitted. Beverages are not restricted.

OPERATION RICE BOWLOperation Rice Bowl is a Lenten program of Catholic Relief Services. Proceeds will help the less fortunate in our diocese and around the world. The money you saved from fasting and sacrifice may be brought in at 7:00 p.m. Mass on Holy Thursday.
