I don’t know if you have noticed but it seems like we are already up to our necks in the rancor & hostility of another presidential election year. Whether it be national or local, it seems like politics tend to bring out the divisions & the dark side of our human character. If politicians are in fact public servants, then why will they do almost anything to get elected? I so often hear others complain & often I complain too about how our Republican leaders won’t talk to our Democratic leaders & visa versa but then how often do I catch myself being bitter or angry with those who don’t think or act like me? How often am I willing to really engage in an open dialogue with those whose position may be different than mine?

I think that Jesus in the Gospel & Isaiah in the first reading has a solution for all of this. Both are telling us that we must be the source of change. We can’t always push off the responsibility of making things better by saying that is what we elect our leaders to do or that is the priest’s job, or the government should take care of those people. Isaiah is very clear that if we want to be that radiant light, that it is your responsibility & mine to share our bread with the hungry, shelter the oppressed and the homeless; clothe the naked and to remove from our midst oppression, false accusations & malicious speech. Being pious & going to Mass can often become

empty of meaning if they are disconnected from the way we live our lives. Our faith cannot be a one day per week thing. Our faith should become OUR WAY OF LIFE. I have very little control over what happens in Washington or in Jefferson City or in Clayton, but I have a lot of control over how I live my life. Do I look for needs or do I keep my head buried in the sand? Do I pay attention to the needs of my brothers & sisters or do I tell myself that someone else can/will take care of them? Feeding, sheltering & clothing are very intimate activities. They cannot be done just from a distance and just with a check. Yes, being generous with our money is helpful but nothing like being generous with my very self & my time.

Jesus calls us to be salt for the earth. We are called to be light for our world. Jesus is calling each of us, you & me to this activity to make the kingdom of God more present in our world today. Our call is to confront human pain & suffering and to do whatever we can to embrace those suffering and to meet their needs. Someone will win the election in the fall but that will never relieve us of our call to be salt for the earth & a light to the world. We can choose to be of service and to truly treat those around us as brother & sister.

God Bless, Deacon Randy

Contemplative Corner #147

One key common fruit of contemplative practice and contemplative living is the ability to recognize the Divine Presence not only in ourselves, but also in everything and everyone else. What else can we mean by calling someone a Brother or a Sister in Christ, than that somewhere at the very core of our being, we recognize the “family resemblance” that each of us shares, the fact that each of our distinct beings is one creative expression of Being itself? Such recognition will naturally have an impact on the work that we do. Recognizing the “Divine Spark” is each of us causes a subtle but crucial shift in our approach to the other: Our work is never about remaking someone in the Divine Image—each of us in a unique and unrepeatable expression of that image already. We need not build a Temple of the Spirit in another person; that work has been done. Rather, our job is to recognize, restore, and build up the Temple that is each individual, calling forth the Glory that indwells them. The work of the contemplative is not to change someone into something they are not, but to call forth the truth of who, and Whose, they are!

Parish Nurse’s Corner

The next Health Ministry Commission meeting is Tuesday, Feb. 18th at 7PM. We will discuss events coming up in the next few weeks to months, please join us in classroom 3 and 4!

Save the date for our next blood drive: We will, again, host Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center on Tuesday, May 12th in the Parish Hall. Thank you, again, for making our blood drives so successful!

Illnesses: We are in the midst of the influenza season, we know this quite well! According to Dr. Ken Haller, SLUCare pediatrician, this will be one of the most severe flu seasons in years. Cases are still being reported for both Influenza A and B. Reports from January accounted for close to 300 cases per week in St. Louis County, alone! Source: www.mo.gov. It is up to each of us to follow preventive measures: *get the flu shot if haven’t gotten it yet *wash hands frequently, being sure to wash fingers and under fingernails, too * Stay away from others if feeling ill * throw away used Kleenex. The incidence of cold and flu virus is greater in the winter, especially when the atmosphere is dry and very cold.

What about the Coronavirus? The most recent and closest case, to date, is in Chicago, which was a person-to-person transfer, case explained as husband whose wife had been in Wuhan, China - where the virus originated. The incidence of this virus affecting anyone in St. Louis area is extremely small. Source: www.stlouis-mo.gov.

A Tithing Thank you from

The English Tutoring Project Supports the teaching of English to children

from immigrant and refugee families at four Catholic elementary schools in the city, St. John the Baptist, St. Cecilia School, St. Frances Cabrini Academy, and Immaculate Heart of Mary.

In the name of the Board of Directors I want to thank you for the generous tithing gift to the English Tutoring Project. Your tithing certainly helps our students receive the assistance they need in school to be proficient in English. Tutors have been assisting students in two city schools for over 20 years. Because of you, tutors will be there for children who need language acquisition skills to succeed and become strong members of the local community and beyond.

Often it is said, “It takes a village to raise a child.” You are part of that village.

I was so glad to meet some of the parishioners in the spring. Thanks for the opportunity.

Important Information Regarding Safe Environment Program Compliance

The Archdiocese of St. Louis has developed a new system for safe environment compliance called Prevent and Protect STL. Everyone ministering to minors and vulnerable adults (clergy, employees and volunteers) in the Archdiocese are required and asked to register in the new system before June 30, 2020. This includes those new to service and those who are currently in service. For those who have already attended a Protecting God’s Children workshop, your previous training date will transfer to this new system.
