Today’s second reading seems to imply that marriage is a limited vocation because a married person is not able to be both married and “busy with the Lord’s affairs” (1 Cor 7:32). It is important, however, to read this passage in its context. St. Paul believes that Jesus will return shortly (1 Cor 7:29, 31). If “the time is short” (1 Cor 7:29), then it is vital to commit all efforts to converting “as many as possible” (1 Cor 9:19) before Jesus returns. Long-term endeavors such as marriage and family could not meet the short-term need to evangelize full-force. However, Jesus did not return in Paul’s lifetime. The early Church then realized that its members needed to “make disciples” (Mt 28:19) by bearing and raising godly children well-trained in the faith. In this context, married persons have an integral and irreplaceable part in “the Lord’s affairs.” They have the unique advantage of a long-term, nurturing, loving, and discipling relationship with their children that cannot be forged by any other member of the body of Christ. Paul then realized that God is so pleased by this kind of marriage that He considers it to be a reflection of His own love for the Church (Eph 5:31-32). PRAYER: Father, may all married couples build up the body of Christ and thereby be devoted “entirely to the Lord” (1 Cor 7:35). PROMISE: “The people were spellbound by His teaching because He taught with authority, and not like the scribes.” — Mk 1:22 PRAISE: Praise You, Jesus, for loving us perfectly, even while we were still sinners (Rm 5:8). Welcome to St Catherine’s and to Spring Semester

Spring Semester is here with us. I would like to welcome all our students and faculty back to school and to St. Catherine’s. Let me wish you happy New Year since we begin another calendar year, 2018. I hope our students and faculty are coming back for the spring semester with hearts still full of the joys and hope of Christmas and the renewed sense of strength from the New Year. Having rested enough during the holidays I know you begin the semester with renewed strength. St Catherine’s provide a home away from home for you all. It is a place of growth in faith, leadership opportunities, service to the community and fellowship building. Remember our generous resident parishioners offer their support and prayers in every way possible to assist us in our ministry. We are so grateful to them. This Semester we will offer opportunities for Health Care conference, Retreats, Revive, Talks, Socials, and other programs planned by Student Leadership Team and FOCUS. The Lenten season starts early this year. Lent and Easter Celebrations will be opportunities for deeper reflection as we approach the throne of God’s grace and mercy. Our daily and weekly schedules remain the same. We will also embark on our Mission Trips to Ghana and Colorado during Spring break. Our staff members are always ready to assist you. Those who attended FOCUS SLS are poised to share their faith with others. We encourage you to participate in the ministry to our students and resident families. Talk to us in any way possible that you wish to serve our community at St Catherine’s. Know that we are here to provide the spiritual home away from your various homes. For those studying abroad, we wish them well with God’s bountiful protection. This may be the last semester for our seniors. We offer them our heartfelt prayers and congratulations. I have to mention that the Pharmacy students who will be graduating this year are particularly dear to me since I started my pastoral assignment at St. Catherine’s with them 6 years ago. I look forward to welcoming them from their rotation. May God grant us a peaceful and successful semester.
