New to Winchester ………………….
The Mental Health Befriending Service has recently been set up by WACA to meet the needs of people with long-term mental health problems, whose illness may have led them to
becoming socially isolated.
The service recruits, trains and matches individual volunteers with clients who have mental health problems and helps them to provide regular, community-based support, companionship and encouragement. Befrienders can make a real difference by regular meetings in a one-to-one partnership. They can share interests and activities whilst doing ordinary things like going for a coffee and having a chat.
All volunteer befrienders attend an initial training course that covers mental health awareness, confidentiality issues, boundaries, listening skills and support and undergo CRB checks. Volunteers have an opportunity to acquire new skills, broaden their experience, have fun, meet new people and make a real difference to someone’s life.
Volunteers from service user background are welcome to apply to become befrienders. You need to be over 18, have a mature outlook and be open-minded about mental health problems. You must want to be supportive, be willing to listen and be prepared to make a commitment.

Silver Surfers learn from the experts at Wyvern
During May Hampshire promoted a county wide Silver Surfers week, managed at Wyvern Technology College by Mrs Pauline Nias, promoting the use of the internet amongst the over 50s. Mrs Claire Walker, head of IT at Wyvern, thought that the confidence of teenagers in using the internet could be of value in introducing technology to those who had no experience of it. This initial idea developed into a project called Silver Surfers, when students from the college spent a morning introducing the wonders of the internet to a group of pensioners from the local area. The aim of the session was to show novices how to use technology to meet their needs: for example emailing, shopping, or researching family or local history, or reading a newspaper on-line. Participants were also asked what they wanted to learn, and what they hoped to gain from the session. The session started at a very simple level, assuming nobody knew anything: the group was shown how to switch on the PC and also how to use the mouse and cursor. The adults were then introduced to Google and shown how to find information about places, historical events, even people. They were also told about Hampshire’s Silver Surfer Website which has links to useful websites, and were also advised about internet safety. ‘This has been a great experience for all concerned,’ says Mrs Walker, ‘and it has been lovely to see two generations meeting and sharing knowledge about 21
st century
technology. The best part for me was watching the delighted face of a man in his 90's as the students helped him find the ship he served on during the war, and how interested the students were in hearing about how he served.’
Let’s Get Cooking club spring 2011 The Let’s Get Cooking Club at Wyvern Technology College has been such a run away success over the last few months that even Headteacher Mr Alan Newton has been inspired to join the team of enthusiastic young chefs. The Let’s Get Cooking after school cookery club for pupils, parents and the wider community is funded by the national lottery with the aim of encouraging families to eat more healthily while also having fun. By the end of the five-year programme across the country, it is hope that very many children, family members and those from the local community will increase their cooking skills. Under the guidance of Mrs Jane King, technology teacher at Wyvern, the club has gone from strength to strength, with each group cooking for a community event such as biscuits for the cast of the school production and with a sale of cakes. The profits made from the Bake Sale this term will go towards Martha’s Fund, the local Cystic Fibrosis charity supported by the college. Mr Newton, exchanging his academic gown for an apron, showed students how to make chicken or prawn Quesadillas (wraps to you and me). ‘Along with Mrs King I am delighted at the response to this initiative,’ says Mr Newton, ‘The students involved are having a huge amount of fun while learning healthy eating habits they will hopefully take with them into their families and adult lives.’

CONTINUOUS INSURANCE ENFORCEMENT In the biggest change to motor insurance law since the Second World War, it will
be an offence to keep an uninsured vehicle, rather than just to drive when
uninsured. The new legislation is law from 20 June 2011.
The new system, called Continuous Insurance Enforcement (CIE), will compare the
DVLA registered keepers database with the Motor Insurance Database (MID) and
uninsured drivers will be contacted so that they obtain insurance by an escalating
system of penalties.
Those caught will face a penalty of £100 – which can be reduced to £50. Only
vehicles with a valid Statutory Off Road Notice (SORN) will not be required to be
insured.
A national advertising campaign has recently been launched to raise awareness of
the new rules.
The initiative is good news for honest drivers. Uninsured driving costs premium
paying motorists around £30 a year on their insurance policy, and it is hoped that
reducing the number of uninsured drivers on the road will reduce pressure on
everyone’s premiums.
It is a proven fact that motorists driving without insurance are also likely to skip
their annual MOT and are six times more likely to drive an unsafe vehicle.
Uninsured drivers are also three times more likely to be convicted of driving
without due care and attention, and ten times more likely to have a drink driving
conviction. It is hoped that CIE will help increase the level of accountability and
responsibility on Britain's roads.
Remember – Crimestoppers is a registered charity which is there to give everyone
opportunity to give information about crime completely anonymously. No one will
ever know you phoned or gave information on line.

College comes together to raise funds for Cystic Fibrosis sufferers.
At the time of year when most year 11 students are focussed on themselves and their exams, students at Wyvern Technology College are selflessly supporting two of their class mates through difficult times. Twins in year 11 at Wyvern are chronic sufferers of Cystic. A medical vest would really help their daily routine of physiotherapy and make their lives easier. So Wyvern has decided to help raise this money and the cost of the vest is £7000! Mrs Hazel Richardson, Pastoral leader of year 11, and her husband Trevor, who also teaches at Wyvern, decided to undertake a 100 miles sponsored walk to raise funds. In the Easter holiday they set off to Prestatyn, on the north coast of Wales, and spent a week walking 100 miles along Offa’s Trail to Knighton. Their trek was warmed not only by splendid weather, but also by the generous and donations and sponsorship from parents, staff, and students. Year 11 students have also raised more money by holding raffles and a sponsored bike ride while on 12 May each student paid £1 on a non uniform day, 50% of which was donated to the fund. Mrs Richardson says, ‘This has been a wonderful event supported magnificently by parents and staff. Most of all, however, I am delighted at the way students have taken this challenge to their hearts.’
receptionist & Café Help Would you like to spend time in a cheerful, social setting? Colden Common Community Centre needs volunteer receptionists to man the Centre Foyer, giving out information, greeting and chatting to visitors, showing hirers where things are and giving them the information they need. The hours can be as many or as little as you wish. As our café is in its infancy we are also asking for help in preparing and serving drinks and food. Every day brings a different clientele into the centre, it could be Mums with babies and toddlers, senior citizens, young people, those with a disability, ladies coming in for palates, bridge players or persons accessing our IT facilities. This is a cheerful, social occupation; would you like to be one of us? If so please ring 02380 692409. If there is no answer please leave a message. I will get back to you.

Parish Council Annual General Meeting
The fifteenth Annual General Meeting of the Bishopstoke Parish Council was held on
24 May 2011. At the meeting, councillors re-elected Cllr Susan Toher as Chairman
and Cllr Anne Winstanley as Vice-Chairman of the Council. Various committee
memberships and representatives of the Council on local groups and other bodies were
also confirmed.
Funding the community
Councillors were very pleased to be able to grant £500 to Victim Support to assist them
in meeting the costs of providing practical help and emotional support to victims of
crime in the Bishopstoke area. An analysis of last year's expenditure showed that more
than £40,000 was invested back in the local community either by way of grants to local
organisations or spent in the provision of local services. It remains the Council's
intention to continue to improve the Bishopstoke community as funds permit and
applications are invited from local organisations and good causes for financial
assistance. Application forms are available from the Clerk or they can be downloaded
from the Parish website.
Transfer of responsibility from the Borough Council
As part of the on-going process of transferring responsibility for providing facilities to
the local community from Eastleigh Borough Council to the Parish Council we have
now taken over ten more bus shelters in Bishopstoke to go with the four already owned
and provided by the Parish Council. We are now looking to take over the management
of the smaller play areas and open spaces with effect from 1 April 2012. As with the
Cemetery and the allotments which were taken over last year, the Council believes
putting responsibility in local hands will result in a closer and more personal
management of these facilities for the better of local residents. The larger open space
areas such as Brookfield and Glebe Meadow will likely be taken over in 2013.
The next meeting of the Parish Council will be on Tuesday 28 June 2011 at 7.30pm in the Methodist
Church Hall, Sedgwick Road, Bishopstoke.
All meetings of the Parish Council and its Committees are open to the public and full meetings of
the Parish Council normally take place on the fourth Tuesday of each month except August and
December when no meetings are held.
