A Message from Our Pastor Fr. Gregory Spencer

For this Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, Matthew’s Gospel comes after Jesus admonishes people who have witnessed his mighty deeds yet still lack belief. Today’s Gospel is a continuation of last week’s reading, showing what it means to be a disciple of Jesus. He explains the reason for this unbelief and reveals what is necessary for faith.

First, Jesus prays in thanksgiving to God who has made himself

known to Jesus’ disciples. He praises God who has made himself known to these “little ones” and not to the wise and learned. This is in reference to the unbelieving Pharisees, who are wise and learned, and the believing disciples like tax collectors and sinners with whom Jesus keeps company.

Also not long ago, we celebrated Trinity Sunday. The second

part of today’s Gospel calls to our attention the unity between the Father and the Son. God has made himself known through Jesus, and in knowing Jesus, we come to know the Father. In Jesus’ life and in his person, God reveals himself to us.

In conclusion to today’s Gospel, Jesus contrasts his teaching to

that of the Pharisees. This is a reflection of the growing tension between Jesus and the Pharisees and between the Pharisees and the community of Christians for whom Matthew wrote. Pharisaic Judaism became the predominant form of Judaism after the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem about 70 A.D. Here that tension is expressed as alternative paths of holiness. The careful observance of the Mosaic law taught by the Pharisees could be experienced by some as difficult and burdensome. In contrast, Jesus’ way of holiness is presented as uncomplicated and even restful. May we always put our faith and trust in Jesus.

Ad Maiorem Dei Gloriam, Fr. Greg.

14th Sunday in Ordinary Time Matthew 11:25-30 Laying Down Your Burdens Jesus said, “Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” (Matthew 11:28-29) Living the Word: Right now we all might be experiencing a lot of different emotions; worry, fear, anxiety, despair. Today’s Gospel reminds us that when we hold onto these ‘burdens’ they seem to grow heavier and heavier. Jesus is reminding us to come to Him, to share our burdens with him in prayer so He can help lighten the load and give us peace and rest. Gather the family together, take a bowl and set it on your prayer space. Ask each family member to talk about a fear/worry that they are carrying around now. Have everyone write their burden on a piece of paper; you can make the paper into a shape like a heart if you want. Place these papers into the bowl. Stand around the bowl, praying together an Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be. The leader (Dad or Mom) can ask Jesus to take the family burdens and help each member with it. Every night, gather around your prayer space asking for Jesus’ help and guidance. You might also want to include a favorite hymn to sing together.

Questions of the Week: Child: What burden do you need Jesus to help you carry? Adult: When has Jesus refreshed you when you felt burdened by problems?

Fun Facts for Catholic Kids:  July 5th is the feast day of St. Anthony Zaccaria. He thought people shouldn’t leave all the church work to the priests, nuns, or brothers. He said EVERYONE should get busy and help out! His mother became a widow at 18, and devoted herself to the spiritual education of her son. He received a medical doctorate at 22, and while working among the poor of his native Cremona in Italy, was attracted to the religious apostolate. He renounced his rights to any future inheritance, worked as a catechist, and was ordained a priest at the age of 26. Called to Milan in a few years, he laid the foundations of three religious congregations, one for men, one for women, and an association of married couples. Greatly inspired by Saint Paul—Anthony preached with great vigor in church and street, conducted popular missions, and was not ashamed of doing public penance. He encouraged collaboration of the laity, frequent Communion, 40 hour devotion, and ringing of church bells at 3:00 p.m. on Fridays. So after reading a bit on St. Anthony’s life and mission, what can you do to help in our parish? Think about it, talk to your parents about it, and let us know! There are many opportunities for families and children to help serve the Church!

WE DID IT!! The June Collection Month was nothing more than miraculous!!! With the Parish only having two live Masses, the idea of reaching goals from 2019 was a distant dream. BUT, your love and support DID IT!!! Our Sharing Tree Volunteers, lovingly called Branches, manned the Catholic Charities Truck from noon Saturday (June 27th) until 2:00Pm Sunday (June 28th) and the results were remarkable. Cars came steadily streaming in and donations were wonderful. Each donor received a heart from our HOPE Tree until there were no more hearts to share.

Because of your support, the Sharing Tree Ministry created 61 Sharing Tree kits for Pender County Families and over 50 kit donations for families in New Hanover and Brunswick counties. This surpassed our 2019 record of 100 kits. We also collected, $1,057.00 in monetary donations which will be used to make kits in preparation of Hurricane Season. Specialty kits will also be created for distribution to our Mission Church families this month.

God Bless you for your kindness!!!
