January 7th The Epiphany of the Lord

This weekend, we celebrate the visit of the Magi to the Christ Child. This announces the fact that Jesus came to save all peoples, both Jews and Gentiles. The word Epiphany is from the form of the Greek lan-

guage used in the New Testament called koine. It means “manifestation or appearance.”

In the classical Greek language, the word was used for the appearance of dawn, and for the manifestation of a deity to a worshiper. In the Septuagint Bible, the word is used of a manifestation of the God of Israel (2 Maccabees 15:27). In the New Testament the word is used to refer either to the birth of Jesus, or to his ap-pearance after his resurrection. It is also used five times to refer to his Second Coming.

Until 1955, when Pope Pius XII abolished all but three liturgical octaves (Christmas, Easter, & Pentecost) the Church celebrated Epiphany as an eight-day feast.

Now, we celebrate it for only one weekend! So have a most blessed Epiphany!

New American Saint-to-be?

According to a recent issue of The Magazine of the National Council of Catholic Women, we have a person who is taking his second step on the path to canonization! His name is Fr. Solanus Casey!

Fr. Casey was a Capuchin priest at the St. Bonaventure Monastery near

Detroit. During the Great Depression of 1929, he began his ministry of helping the needy of Detroit. For the next 22 years, he continued that ministry.

Fr. Casey was declared “venerable” by Pope John Paul II in 1995. Then, Pope Francis determined the authen-ticity of a miracle through his intercession, and on No-vember 18, 2017, Fr. Casey was named “Blessed.” This ceremony took place at Ford Field in Detroit. The next step is sainthood!

Before arriving at St. Bonaventure Monastery, Father had served as gatekeeper at several monasteries in New York. He was greatly sought after as a counselor, and for blessing the sick. Many felt that he cured their illness, but ALL were consoled by his counsel.

Fr. Casey died in Detroit in 1957. Fr. Gerald Walker, provincial minister of the Detroit Capuchins, initiated his canonization process by sending a report to Rome after Fr. Casey’s death. The miracle newly certified by our Holy Father was that of the cure of a woman’s genetic skin disorder. This happened instantaneously after her prayer at Fr. Casey’s tomb!
