FOOD PANTRY Our parish pantry is in need of non-perishable proteins. These items include, but are not limited to: SPAM, Vienna Sausages, Canned Tuna, Canned Chicken Breast, Chili with Meat and Soups containing meat. We could also use peanut butter and boxed milk such as Parmalat. Reusable cloth grocery bags are also a huge help. Please note we cannot accept any clothing (new or used), any outdated or expired items. Donations may be brought to Madden Hall.

FAREWELL AND THANK YOU DEACON PAUL AND JAN ANTOR

After seven years of ministry at Saint John the Beloved, it is time for us to move to new places. Deacon Paul recently accepted a job transfer that will take them to Grand Rapids, Michigan. Our accents and stories have given away that we are from Michigan, and we look forward to reconnecting with family there. We are so grateful for the great gift you have given us during our time in Summerville-opportunities to share the Good News, to take part in some of the most important mo-ments in your family life, and to form lasting friend-ships. Our last weekend in the parish will be February 22-23. We hope we have a chance to say goodbye in person, but either way we wish you and the people of Saint John the Beloved God’s peace and abundant blessings.

We will have a farewell celebration for Deacon Paul and Jan Antor after the 5PM Mass on Satur-day, February 22 at 6PM in the Commons. Every-one is invited and encouraged to attend.

A NOTE FROM DEACON JIM To My St John the Beloved Family: I would like to thank you for all the kind thoughts, cards, and the reception celebrating my Incardination to the Diocese of Charleston. It was wonderful and deeply appreciated. The family of St John the Beloved have made Jo-anne and I feel so welcome and loved. We pray that the Holy Spirit allows us to continue our service to this community, as we all continue our walk with Christ! Pax Deacon Jim

SUNDAY CONNECTION

Matthew continues the Sermon on the Mount with a three part instruction by Jesus on the Way of Life in the kingdom of heaven. Today’s reading is part one and deals with the Law. Part two deals with worship and religious practice and contains the Lord’s Prayer. Part three deals with trusting God and deeds of loving ser-vice to our neighbor.

When Matthew speaks of “the Law and the prophets” he means the whole Scripture. When the Messiah brings the fullness of the kingdom none of scripture will be done away with. Instead it will be fulfilled. Matthew’s Jesus does not overturn the Law of Moses, nor does he set his followers free from the Law. He requires his followers to go beyond the Law by doing more than the Law requires.

The Law condemned murder. Jesus condemns anger. The Law condemned adultery. Jesus condemns even lustful looks. As Jewish Christians who had always been faithful to the Law Matthew’s community need a way to understand the difference Jesus and the kingdom he brings have made. They affirmed that God had always been at work in history through “the Law and the prophets.” But God’s work goes beyond that to be embodied by the Messiah who reveals the definitive will of God. The written scriptures and their interpretation in tradition are surpassed by Jesus whose life and teaching are the definitive revelation of the will of God. - Loyola Press
