FROM OUR PASTOR 2

Dear Parishioners, As we begin to look to the future needs of our parish in terms of professional staffing, we have decided that it is time to look for a full-time business manager. Currently we have been getting by with a part-time finance person and no buildings and grounds person since Tom Gruber retired. We as a parish owe Linda Howard a huge debt of gratitude for all that she has accomplished in setting up new systems for the merging of the four churches into one parish. She also guided the staff through the conversion to a new member and donation system called PDS and a new accounting system called Intacct. Both conversions were required by the diocese as part of updating our technology. She was wonderful and patient working through the many bugs that inevitably pop up with this type of activity. I would have loved to bring her on full-time to care for all the finance and buildings and grounds but she does not see herself working the hours necessary. Along with Linda, I would like to thank the many volunteers who helped us bridge the gap in parish resources and so keep up our buildings and grounds.

Therefore, you will see in the bulletin this week, the job description as set by the diocese for the position of the business manager. This staff position is called for in “Telling Anew the Story of Jesus,” which is the document that set up the clustering process. The idea is that with the reduced number of priests, a professional layperson is called for attending to the

business side of the parish. The review of resumes and initial interviews are done by the Human Resources and Finance Departments of the Diocese. I look forward to spending more time with spiritual matters and less with the business concerns that make up our parish.

Peace, Fr. Daniel Greenleaf

ADVENT MATERIALS WEEK 3 5

First reading Isaiah 35:1-6A, 10 The desert and the parched land will exult; the steppe will rejoice and bloom. They will bloom with abundant flowers, and rejoice with joyful song. The glory of Lebanon will be given to them, the splendor of Carmel and Sharon; they will see the glory of the LORD, the splendor of our God. Strengthen the hands that are feeble, make firm the knees that are weak, say to those whose hearts are frightened: Be strong, fear not! Here is your God, he comes with vindication; with divine recompense he comes to save you. Then will the eyes of the blind be opened, the ears of the deaf be cleared; then will the lame leap like a stag, then the tongue of the mute will sing. Those whom the LORD has ransomed will return and enter Zion singing, crowned with everlasting joy; they will meet with joy and gladness, sorrow and mourning will flee. The Word of the Lord. Commentary on Isaiah: For a people in exile in Babylon, with their Temple and their Holy City of Jerusalem lying in utter ruin, with their homes devastated and reduced to a mere desert, this message of hope must have been most cheering and sustaining. The promise is that they will be restored to their land. At the summit of this experience of rebirth, they will once again be able to worship their God on Mount Zion. We read this during Advent because it is also a time of waiting for God to restore all things in Christ Jesus.

Question for Understanding Why is this reading appropriate to read during Advent? Question for Discussion What do you hope God will restore in your life? Responsorial Psalm Ps 146:6-7, 8-9, 9-10

R. Lord, come and save us.

The LORD God keeps faith forever, secures justice for the oppressed,

gives food to the hungry. The LORD sets captives free. R. Lord, come and save us.

The LORD gives sight to the blind;

the LORD raises up those who were bowed down. The LORD loves the just;

the LORD protects strangers. R. Lord, come and save us.

The fatherless and the widow he sustains,

but the way of the wicked he thwarts. The LORD shall reign forever;

your God, O Zion, through all generations. R. Lord, come and save us.

Second Reading james 5:7-10 Be patient, brothers and sisters, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient with it until it receives the early and the late rains. You too must be patient. Make your hearts firm, because the coming of the Lord is at hand. Do not complain, brothers and sisters, about one another, that you may not be judged. Behold, the Judge is standing before the gates. Take as an example of hardship and patience, brothers and sisters, the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. The Word of the Lord.

ADVENT MATERIALS WEEK 3 6

Commentary on James: First generation Christians were beginning to

pass away and still the Lord had not yet returned.

Some were beginning to falter; some began to

lose hope; most were terribly impatient. They had

good reason to be restless: the most horrendous

persecutions assailed them from every side.

What was the meaning of all this? To what

purpose would they continue to hold out? The

writer of the Letter of James invites them to

persevere in patience. The prophet, too, had had

to endure unspeakable trials.

Question for Understanding Why is James asking for Christians to remain patient? Question for Discussion What causes you to be impatient, especially during this Advent season? Gospel Reading Matthew 11:2-11 When John the Baptist heard in prison of the works of the Christ, he sent his disciples to Jesus with this question, “Are you the one who is to come, or should we look for another?” Jesus said to them in reply, “Go and tell John what you hear and see: the blind regain their sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor have the good news proclaimed to them. And blessed is the one who takes no offense at me.” As they were going off, Jesus began to speak to the crowds about John, “What did you go out to the desert to see? A reed swayed by the wind? Then what did you go out to see? Someone dressed in fine clothing? Those who wear fine clothing are in royal palaces. Then why did you go out? To see a prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. This is the one about whom it is written: Behold, I am sending my messenger ahead of you; he will prepare your way before you. Amen, I say to you, among those born of women there has been none greater than John the Baptist; yet the least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.” The Gospel of the Lord. Commentary on Matthew: John has been arrested and will shortly pay with

his head on a platter for being so direct with his

message. Of course, Jesus will pay his price, too,

on the Cross of Calvary, when his time has come.

Jesus apparently waits for John to have finished

his mission before he begins his own. When

referring to John, Jesus says that the least born in

the kingdom is greater than John. The Christ

represents an entirely new reality and to live now,

in this new reality, needs to be seen as far

surpassing anything done under the previous

dispensation. To live after the Cross and the

Resurrection of Jesus cannot be compared with

any prior blessing that God had ever given to the

world. The season that helps to prepare for the

coming of the Anointed One must be taken

seriously. It is a time for us to realize how

incredibly privileged we are to have been chosen

to live in post-resurrection times. Advent has to

put us in touch with the Easter events so that the

true meaning of Christmas will be unveiled.

Question for Understanding Can you speak as to how the lives of Jesus and John are similar and how they differ? Question for Discussion How can you relate or not relate to the figure of

St. John the Baptist?

Assisting those in need....mission of Social Justice and Peace Commission The work undertaken by the Commission is broad -- reaching eight towns in Cumberland Country. Four churches in Parish of the Holy Eucharist are the centers of worship and charity is foremost in its concern. One aspect of the Commission responsibility is to assist the clergy and parish staff in responding to needs of individuals and families in an emergency situation. Most frequently, this begins with a phone call to the parish office. It may involve people who are not members of the parish. The emergency need is foremost - not a person’s affiliation. A confidential protocol is followed and the request is referred to a volunteer -- a Commission member. Information is developed through a series of phone calls or meetings. The Commission member may assist the needy person in contacting community services. When deemed truly in need of church help with no other options, we will provide financial support -- a payment to a rental office, oil company for a fuel delivery, or other service . The request is particularly important when young children may be harmed by an electricity cut-off, a cold house, a dry well, or sleeping in a car in a retail parking lot. Our church can offer help because parishioners have contributed to the fund for “heating and the needy.” It is not an item in the annual parish budget, but money totally dependent on what people donate. Between July 2015 and June 2016, the Parish offered financial help in 38 cases, totaling approximately $12,500. Truly remarkable and we thank you. The next monthly meeting of the Social Justice Commission is Thursday December 8, 6:30pm at the Sacred Heart Rectory. All interested parishioners are welcome to attend. SAINT VINCENT de PAUL CLOTHING PROGRAM: Your donations have most certainly been coming in daily in the spirit of the season and that of the YEAR OF MERCY--we THANK YOU! The amounts being given allow us to share some of the clothing with the Cumberland and Falmouth pantries who in turn do the same as St.Vincent and allow those in need to receive the nice warm clothing with their food pick up ALL FOR FREE! JESUS IS VERY PROUD OF YOU ALL--Jack Mullin CUMBERLAND/FALMOUTH FOOD PANTRIES Thanksgiving at the pantries was a huge success in terms of product quality and quantity. It was a very pleasant experience for all. The atmosphere was heavy with love, caring, sharing, hope, and thanks for your continuing support in making this program so personal and compassionate in helping our neighbors through some tough times!
