Dear Parishioners,
So how has the covid-19 pandemic affected the financial picture at Blessed Sacrament? Like most organizations, it hasn’t been good. Blessed Sacrament depends largely on the charity and generosity of her parishioners in order to pay the bills and since we are unable to pass the basket at our Masses, the major source of revenue has been cut. Although many in the parish have been generous by mailing in their contribution (and in fact some have even given a little more), the weekly income is down about 50%. So what does that mean? Blessed Sacrament has 65 full-time and part-time employees that work for our parish and our school. Where we charge tuition for the school, the operating cost of the school is 2.9 million dollars. Tuition and fees account for 57% of the budget. Fund-raising, such as the auction and annual fund, accounts for 18%. The rest (25%) comes from the parish. On top of the operating expenses, there are also non-operating expenses such as repairs. Last year Blessed Sacrament Parish contributed $175,000 over the 25% for repairs. Most of that went to replace half of the roof on the school. The other half also needs to be done soon. However, the first concern is our employees. They have expenses to meet and families to care for. We applied for the Payroll Protection Plan (PPP), but since the money ran out, we have not been promised any funds or loans so far. We have some savings, but are not sure how long that will last. Some of our savings are earmarked for capital improvements. Blessed Sacrament’s Finance Council has met and is monitoring the situation. Since there has not been a crisis like this, there is no guideline telling us what is the best procedure to follow. I trust the wisdom of my council. They are men and women involved and experienced in finance. I am greatly appreciative of those who continue to give in these uncertain times. It shows one’s faith in God. At the same time, I am concerned for the parishioners who are in financial troubles because of layoffs, reduced hours, or emergencies that have put a strain on their resources. Our H.O.P.E. committee is set up to help parishioners who have such emergencies. If you are working, please remember to set aside something to help a neighbor or to help the parish provide the spiritual and physical resources needed. As we work together, we can accomplish much. My prayer is that this crisis will soon pass. Again, I say thank you to the many caring and generous parishioners who are doing their part to help others in these difficult times. May God bless you for the love you have shown. Fr. Jeff
SCHOOL NEWS! SCHOOL CLOSED Here is what Blessed Sacrament is doing to allow you to practice your faith as fully as possible during this crisis.
First of all, there will be no public masses until further notice. Everyone has a dispensation from the weekly obligation to attend Mass. There will be no daily Masses for the public. Mass at Blessed Sacrament can be viewed online - there will be a link on the website. We will tape the Saturday evening Mass "Sine Populo" (without people) and it will be available on Sunday morning. You can make a spiritual communion. You can also call the parish for all other spiritual and sacramental needs.
The parish is not closed - questions can be directed to the parish office at 217-528-7521. Office hours are Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 4 PM.
Adoration Chapel will remain open and you are encouraged to come and pray. The public hours will remain 5 AM to 10 PM. Please remember that the Chapel is for private prayer. We ask that you not pray out loud or in a way that distracts another person trying to pray privately.
Holy water is available in the dispenser in the chapel. Please bring your own container to take it home. If you are taking large amounts, please see one of the priests to have them bless your water. We will be offering confessions in the confessional off the chapel, every day, Monday through Friday, from noon to 1 PM and Saturday 3-4pm Confessionals are being sanitized daily.
Visit the parish website at www.bsps.org. This is the best way to know what is going on in the parish.
The parish depends on your stewardship and generosity in order to bring sacraments and spiritual services to you. With everything severely curtailed, our finances have suffered. Please remember to mail in your contribution or donate online through the secure link below. This will help us meet our obligations. Call the parish office to sign up for ACH (automatic contributions). Many parishioners are also suffering financially from this crisis.
A donation to H.O.P.E. (Helping Our People in Emergencies), formerly known as St. Vincent de Paul, will let our parish reach out to them.
Dear Blessed Sacrament Parishioners, With great joy, I am informing you that the Most Reverend Thomas John Paprocki, D.D., Bishop of the Diocese of Springfield in Illinois has appointed me to become PAROCHIAL ADMINISTRATOR of Sacred Heart of Mary Parish, New Berlin, Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish, Alexander, Sacred Heart Parish, Franklin and CHAPLAIN at Jacksonville State Correctional Facility, Jacksonville. With this, I would like to take the opportunity to thank all of you here at Blessed Sacrament for the opportunity I had been given, serving and ministering you and your loved ones. My two years of pastoral ministry here in your parish was truly a joyful and fruitful experience. I will bring the good experiences I had with you as I move to my next pastoral assignment. I assure you of my continued prayers and ask you all to do the same for me. May God bless you, Fr. The time you spend with Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament is the best time that you will spend on earth. Each moment that you spend with Jesus will deepen your union with Him and make your soul everlastingly more glorious and beautiful in heaven, and will bring about an everlasting peace on earth.” (St. Mother Teresa of Calcutta) For further information please email Karen Senger at [email protected].
