Sundays, 2:30pm MSGR. BOYLE MEDIA CENTER

(In the School Building, Enter using the Ramp) 268 E 207 St., Bronx, NY

December 4th: 1 Hour, 41 Minutes THE NATIVITY STORY (2006) Dramatization of the New Testament birth narratives from the Annunciation to the birth of Jesus, focusing on the relationship between Mary and Joseph and their arduous trek from Nazareth to Bethlehem, with subplots tracking the journey of the three Magi and the efforts of King Herod to prevent the prophecy of a messiah from coming to pass. It is a composite of the Gospels of Matthew and Luke. Mike Rich's screenplay manages to flesh out Mary and Joseph while remaining faithful to Scripture, poignantly suggesting the humanity beneath the halos.

December 11th: 1 Hour, 12 Minutes THE FOURTH WISE MAN (1985) Adaptation of Henry Van Dyke's vintage short story "The Other Wise Man," tells of a fourth Magi (Martin Sheen) who is delayed in following the star to Bethlehem, then finally catches up with it in Jerusalem some 33 years later in an encounter which fulfills his life's search for truth. Produced by Paulist Father Ellwood Keiser and directed by Michael Rhodes, the 72-minute dramatization effectively amplifies the religious dimension of the original while adding some light humor from Alan Arkin as the Magi's servant. Family entertainment with the universal theme of bettering oneself by helping others.

SCRIPTURE INSIGHTS WEEKDAY READINGS

The Scriptures for today are full of hope. That hope, however, is tinged with a warning, as we discover in the preaching of John the Baptist. The First Reading for the four Sundays of Advent are taken from the great Hebrew prophet, Isaiah. Today he proclaims that a new king shall sprout from the family tree of Jesse (David’s father). This new king will rule with wisdom and justice, and the world will be transformed—even the animal kingdom. As in last week’s Isaiah passage, we read of a holy mountain, the place from which God’s power and peace will envelop the nations. Today’s psalm echoes the attributes of the king announced by Isaiah. It cries out for God to endow the king with justice, the same justice that God has for all nations. Jesus, of the house of David, will embody this same justice when the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled generations later. Paul reminds the Christians of Rome that the Word of God contained in the ancient Scriptures, what we know as the Old Testament, is the source of their hope. God intended that his Word bring them hope, and be a source of great encouragement; it is the reason that they should live in harmony. In so doing, they will be one with Jesus Christ and will be able to praise God with one voice. The Gospel for today and next Sunday introduces John the Baptist. Each year during Advent we read John’s call for repentance as he storms out of the wilderness! For him repentance is the necessary step for becoming part of the Reign of God. John harshly criticizes the religious leaders; not because he is the one to judge—that is the role of Jesus—but because he is adamant that all should be ready to accept the one who comes after him. What virtues or actions noted in the readings will identify

those who await the Lord? What do the readings suggest about what is necessary for

Christians to live in harmony with one another? What insights do the themes of Advent —and these reading in

particular—offer you about our own Baptism?
