PASSION PLAY 2020

Under the auspices of the Durban Catholic Players’ Guild, the Durban Passion Play has been staged every five years since 1952. It is a very special way of bringing the gospel message to others. It is also an institution of which Durban can feel justifiably proud, as Durban is the only city throughout the world which has historical links with the world famous Oberammergau Passion Play: we are the only Passion Play in the world authorised to use an adaptation of the original Oberammergau script.

Easter 2020 promises to be a very special time for Durban, as it will be the time of the fifteenth production of the Durban Passion Play. Before this can happen, however, we need to get together a cast. People of all ages, from infants to great-grandparents, are needed to help make this wonderful form of evangelisation a reality. The Durban Passion Play is a professional production performed by a cast of dedicated amateurs who receive no payment for their performance, yet ask any past cast member and you will hear that the rewards to be reaped are far more precious than money.

Page 6: Parish of Our Lady of Fatima · Parish Pilgrimage to Italy: 17-26 May 2020 Highlights: Assisi (home town of St Francis and St Clare), Loreto, Lanciano (site of the first and greatest

The spirit of camaraderie, the sense of unity, and the sheer spiritual enrichment all make for an unforgettable and life-changing experience. It is one every Christian should have the opportunity of enjoying. To be a part of this amazing production is not only an honour but a blessing. New and lasting friendships and relationships as well as a sense of progression on your own personal spiritual journey are just some of the rewards most cast members experience. Your participation in the Durban Passion Play will not only enrich your life - it will change your life forever. As a new cast member said after his first Passion Play a few years ago, “Easter will never be the same again!”

The Durban Catholic Players’ Guild will be holding auditions over the weekend of 24 and 25 August at Holy Family Convent in Glenmore. For those of you who are confident of speaking in public, there are numerous speaking roles waiting to be cast, but even if you are shy of speaking in front of an audience you can still enjoy and participate in this wonderful experience by being part of the crowd, an anonymous yet vital component of the unfolding drama - the last week of the earthly life of Our Lord and Saviour. Young men, you are needed to play Roman soldiers. Young ladies, you can indulge your love of dancing in King Herod’s colourful court. Whether you are a highly talented actor or are afraid of speaking in public but want to help spread the gospel, there is a place for everyone in the play. All will be welcomed by our Passion Play family, for that is truly what one becomes – a loved member of a loving family, united by our common evangelisation, and by the sheer joy of being a part of something immensely powerful and totally unforgettable.

The play is a big commitment, but being a part of it is also great fun. Anyone who is willing to make this commitment will be richly rewarded in so many ways that you will definitely not begrudge your time and effort.

Becoming part of the Durban Passion Play experience is an excellent way to help fulfil Jesus’ command to spread the Word to all nations on Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 August.
