FROM THE RECTOR February. The Latin word Februa - I hope I've got this right - means Purification.
It refers to the ancient Roman tradition of purification by sacrifice carried out at
this time of the year. 2nd February of course is when the old Christian festival of
Candlemas is celebrated, including the Purification of the Virgin Mary.
Meanwhile at the end of this present February we come to Shrove Tuesday, or
properly the day before Ash Wednesday - or Hash Wednesday as one of my
Leeds parishioners thought it should be called. At any rate it seems to be
a month full of opportunities to be both purified and shriven, perhaps also to be
rescued from such negative meditations of the small hours as - We have left
undone those things which we ought to have done; And we have done those
things which we ought not to have done.
The French Revolution abandoned the old months and established a short lived
republican calendar. 20th January to 20th February became I think Pluviose.
Clearly the revolutionaries found February to be a wet and rainy month, while for
most of us it conjures up potential snow, freezing cold and deep silence in the
natural world.
But this a good and promising month of the year. The days grow longer and
spring is not so far away now. Life, hope and work - they all move on. As Parson
Woodforde of Norfolk noted in his diary for Friday 5th February 1790, close in
time to the French Revolution and its strange new calendar.
.... My poor cow rather better this morning, but not able to get up as yet, she
having a Disorder which I never heard of before or any of out Friends. It is called
Tail-shot, that is, a separation of some of the Joints of the Tail about a foot from
the tip of the Tail, or rather a slipping of one Joint from another. It also makes all
her teeth quite loose in her head. The Cure, is to open that part of the Tail so
slipt lengthways and put in an Onion boiled and some salt, and bind it up
with some coarse tape.
Also - 5th February 1801. ... Very fine Weather indeed for the season. Bees
quite brisk. Crocus's & Snow Drops out in full blossom. Gooseberry Trees
coming into leaf very fast.

FORDCOMBE LUNCHEON CLUB Fordcombe Luncheon club usually meets on the second Thursday of each month at 12-30pm . We have space for new members to come and join us for food and pleasant conversation with old and new friends.

CHURCHYARD TIDYING Despite the cold weather we managed to clear more leaves and clear the area round the compost bin and memorial garden. The next Churchyard tidying takes place early on the 4th February at the usual time of 10am until midday. I hope to see as many as possible to do the final clearing before spring starts. The Services in February follow the normal pattern. However, the second Sunday 12th February coincides with school half-term and with some families away it has been decided not to hold the usual Sunday Club.
The School Ash Wednesday service is at 9-15am on 1st March and all villagers are welcome to attend.

Woodpeckers. Our topic of discussion will be “Simeon and Anna at the presentation of Christ in the Temple”. Please do come along, everyone will be most welcome.

Fordcombe Amateur Gardening Society. Thank you to everyone who came to Beetlebank, it was lovely to see so many of you and to have so many wonderful ideas of things to do. Fordcombe Primary School At the time of writing this pupils have only been back at school for just over week so it is quite a short roundup. Although many adults did not appreciate the drop in temperatures , the icy roads and the prospect of snow, the children had a ball on the school field after the snowfall. There are some great pictures on the website of various snowmen under construction. The pupils in Elm class had a fantastic start to their topic on the Egyptians when they visited the Tunbridge Wells Museum last week. The curator was once again a complete hit as he spoke to the children for an hour about a variety of Egyptian artefacts and objects Pupils from Tonbridge Girls Grammar School were in school again to work with pupils. Oak class undertook a series of mathematical problems and puzzles set by the six TOGGs pupils. It was a great event with all the pupils completely engaged by the challenges set. The various clubs are now up and running again and there are pending netball and football matches. We will bring you ore news next month. ‘ Mags Shackleton

Chafford Lane sluice, River Medway; A response to the Environment Agency article
The Environment Agency is proposing to remove the sluice on the river Medway at Chafford in Fordcombe. This sluice will be familiar to anyone who has walked the delightful footpath along the stretch of the Medway from Chafford Bridge (on Chafford Lane) towards Smarts Hill or Penshurst. January’s newsletter contained an article prepared by the Environment Agency’s appointed consultant, Chris Gardner. This mainly discussed the inability of fish to pass upstream and downstream as a result of this barrier and the one at Ashurst weir. However it did not address the broader set of issues which might impact on users of the river and local residents. I declare an interest: I am lucky enough to live adjacent to the river and close to the sluice. However as a resident of Fordcombe, I am perhaps at least as entitled to share my opinions as someone who is non-local and is in the pay of a national government agency. The editor of the newsletter has therefore generously given me this space to present some alternative views. If the sluice is removed, the river level upstream will fall by over two metres. Rather than an attractive broad reach of river stretching back as far as Ashurst, we will have a muddy creek running at the bottom of exposed, unsightly banks. Current leisure users such as anglers and canoeists will have to enjoy their pursuits elsewhere. The pair of nesting swans on the island by the sluice will lose their safe habitat. There has been a sluice in operation at Chafford since at least the thirteenth century, so a visual landscape which has been largely unchanged for 800 years will be lost. For most of this period, as well as providing flood protection, the head of water worked Chafford Mill. This was successively a fulling mill, a corn mill, and latterly a producer of the specialist papers for postage stamps, bank notes and photographic paper for the whole British empire. The original mill stream still branches from the river at the head of the sluice and runs parallel with the Medway before rejoining around 800 metres downstream just before the B2188. If the sluice is removed and the water level drops, this stream will run dry as will the ponds which it naturally feeds. The loss of aquatic habitat for newts and other amphibians, for birds, and for the otters which hide away in a densely wooded stretch, will be a tragedy. In addition, and here I declare an entirely personal interest, this mill stream provides fresh drinking water to our livestock grazing the adjacent meadows. A way of life which has been carried on by our predecessors, probably for hundreds of years, will cease. If instead the sluice were retained or replaced with a fixed weir, not only would these benefits continue but an additional possibility would be to add a small hydro-electric turbine. This could generate enough power for 50 average households and avoid approximately 100 tonnes of atmospheric carbon emissions each year. Surely this is the sort of project which the Environment Agency should be considering, given the accelerating risks of climate change. Inevitably with changes to any shared resource, there will be a wide range of views. This piece expresses only one viewpoint, and there will be others. But I

Village Hall Action Group News Now that we have planning permission for a new village hall, we need to start on the journey to obtain the funding needed for the project. Local fundraising over the past couple of years has seen a good start. All villagers will be invited to discuss plans and give us ideas at the Village Hall AGM set for Thursday 16
th March, 7.45 for 8pm in the hall. Please come along and meet old and
new neighbours over a glass of wine. We need your support and commitment to make this happen over the next few years. Just a reminder that the Hall Committee are hiring a skip on Saturday January 28
th and would like to invite you to come along any time after 10.30am to help
tidy up the hall and remove all rubbish (including some old chairs). If you have a pressure washer they’d be grateful if you could bring it along. There will be refreshments available and the aim is to finish by around 1.30pm. The plans will also be available to view for those who haven’t already seen them. hope it illustrates that the narrow assessment presented by the consultant in the previous edition is not the whole picture. My concern is that the Environment Agency has decided to reduce its costs by removing the sluice, and its mind is made up. I hope there will be a real debate which weighs the many and varied preferences of the local community. Cost reduction and fish migration are important. But so are the visual amenity of the river, its leisure and recreational use by many residents, the access to water for grazing livestock, and the habitats of mammals and amphibians. When it comes to a decision which could upturn hundreds of years of a continued, stable way of life, the local community should be given a proper chance to understand and debate the issues. Neighbourhood Watch February 2017 Extract from Peter Johnson’s report This report is based on seven Police Reports received between 20

December 2016 and 13th January 2017 when the following two
crimes occurred in Penshurst. Forge Close – Penshurst Between 4.30pm on Sunday 18
th December and 10.00am on Monday 19

December, a vehicle parked in the road had its wing mirror stolen, The Lane – Fordcombe Between 2.00pm on Saturday 17
th December and 2.00pm on Friday 23

December, an Iveco van parked on a driveway was broken into and a tool box and contents was stolen. Crimes not appearing in the Police Reports On Friday 13
th January two residents approached me separately and mentioned
a crime they believed had occurred in Fordcombe the previous day when various tools were stolen from an outbuilding in Fordcombe. A large quantity of lead roofing was also stolen from a nearby building associated with the same resident. Comment The number of crimes reported in the Parish of Penshurst is less than average. I appeal to residents not to be complacent and fit alarms and provide security lights to deter any unwanted visitors/ While looking through some files recently I found a warning regarding Rogue Traders approaching residents and offering to carry out repairs on your property. Before making a any decision I urge you to first contact Trading Standards on 0845 3450219 Monday – Friday 8am – 8pm, and they will provide a report on the Traders honesty

Chiddingstone Castle Literary Festival in association with Brooks Macdonald
Following the success of last year’s inaugural event at Chiddingstone Castle, we are delighted to reveal the line-up for this year’s Literary Festival, taking place over the May Bank Holiday weekend 30 April-2 May 2017. In a new partnership, the Title Sponsor of the Literary Festival will be Brooks Macdonald, an award-winning investment management company with a new office in Tunbridge Wells. Chiddingstone Castle will host an impressive selection of authors including Terry Waite, biographers Artemis Cooper, Anne Sebba and Adam Sisman, presenter of Radio 4’s Saturday Live Rev. Richard Coles, grief psychotherapist Julia Samuel and Guardian journalistDecca Aitkenhead. Also, educationalist and biographer Anthony Seldon, BBC TV’s Coast presenter Nicholas Crane, best-selling writers of historical fiction Alison Weir, Conn Iggulden and local author Angus Donald. Rachel Kelly will reveal inspirational recipes proven to keep the blues at bay. For children, there are appearances from prize-winning authors Piers Torday and Lauren St John, poet A F Harrold and local author Christopher Lloyd.
