Parish News APRIL/MAY 2017 Middleton, North Runcton & East Winch RUN TANK RUN! My name is Matthew King (aka Tank) and I live in Middleton with my wife, daughter and son. I am taking part in the Virgin London Marathon (again!) which this year is on 23rd April and, with your support, I hope to raise much needed money for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust in the only way that I can. You may well ask ‘why is this fool doing this – he is not built for running?’ You are probably right and, apart from the fact that I need to lose weight, I want to raise awareness of the condition alongside helping the daughter of some very close friends. I first came across Cystic Fibrosis in my early years at Middleton Primary School. A friend and classmate, Lee, was frequently poorly and I was, of course, too young to understand but learned later that he suffered from CF and sadly lost his battle with the condition at the age of 18. Thirteen years ago our very close friends had a beautiful baby girl, who they named Shona. When she was three weeks old they were given the heartbreaking news that she had Cystic Fibrosis. Over the years we have grown to understand the condition along with its many complications. We see at first-hand what is involved in her daily routine which is made up of medications, nebulisers, physiotherapy, IV courses and endless hospital appointments. This routine can never be relaxed as her health would rapidly deteriorate. The CF Trust is funded purely by donations and research into this life limiting illness can only continue while these donations keep coming in. I am therefore asking for your support to pledge as much as you can which, in turn, supports families who face the daily challenge of living with Cystic Fibrosis. You can donate by texting TANK74 followed by your amount to 70070 or by visiting the website www.justgiving.com/Tank76. Alternatively you can contact me on 07775 911008. Middleton Parish CouncilChairman's Report

By Mick Porter

By the time this latest Parish News is publishedthe installation of the new play equipment on theplaying field will have been completed. Theillustration on the front of the last Parish Newsgave an artist's impression of the area but nowit is a reality. At the February meeting theParish Council (PC) recognised all the hardwork carried out by the Parish Clerk to ensurethe playing field project was progressed up to itsconclusion. As Chairman I should like to takethe opportunity at this time to endorse thethanks of the PC.

The Mayor of King's Lynn and West NorfolkBorough Council has kindly agreed to formallyopen the new play area at the Sports Field. Theceremony will commence at 12.00 noon on 12April 2017. It would be nice if as manyparishioners as possible could come along andif they have children bring them as well.

On 5 April 2017 the Annual Parish Meeting willbe held in the Village Hall commencing at 7.00pm. This is an opportunity for parishioners tocome along and learn about what the ParishCouncil, Clubs and other Parish organisationshave achieved in the past year.

One of the parishioners, whose land adjoins theplaying field, expressed her concern aboutpeople straying from the field into her garden. After some discussion it was agreed the PCwould investigate the cost of delineating theboundary of the playing field where it adjoins theparishioner's garden.

The PC are concerned with the condition of theroad and it's verges in Water Lane and agreedto approach the local Highways Department tosee what can be done to alleviate this problem. It was agreed to install a battery operated CCTVcamera at the Parish Pit in an attempt to deterfly tipping.

The PC was asked to comment on the WestWinch and North Runcton Neighbourhood Plan. The PC felt the plan was well presented but hadreservations about the funding required to meetsome of the plan's aspirations. The PC also felt

that the plan to move traffic from the A10 to theA47 would be detrimental to the parish ofMiddleton.

It has been brought to the attention of the PCthat the area around the dog waste bin at HillRoad became rutted and muddy when there isprolonged rain. It was decided that it wasimpractical to move the bin and as analternative the area surrounding it will beshingled.

Modernisation of Village Meeting Place

Having set a target of £100,000 to fund themodernisation of the VMP, the Parish Council weredelighted to learn that their bid for a WREN grant hadbeen successful. The grant is for £50,000 which, combined with the other donations and gifts receivedto date, brings the total raised to just over £53,000.The Parish Council are aiming to have the work doneduring July and August but this means we still have toraise a significant amount of money to ensure the VMPcan be fully refurbished.

Are you able to help us? If you are willing to donatesome money, you can do so at our website where wehave set up a “Just Giving” page –northrunctonpc.norfolkparishes.gov.uk.

Our most recent fund raiser was a quiz evening on 3rdMarch, a really successful evening that raised a total of£465. A big thank you to Amanda Dobbing and helpersfor all their work – a job well done. We’re already planning our next fund raiser which willbe a gin tasting evening early in June! More detailsto follow.

Calendar girls – or at least views of thevillage!

The Parish Council are going to compile a calendar for2018 based on views in and around North Runcton, proceeds going towards the VMP refurbishmentproject. The missing ingredients at the moment are thepictures but we hope villagers will be able to supply uswith plenty of material. If you take a picture that you’rewilling to have considered for publication in thecalendar, please email it to the Clerk [email protected].

Annual Residents Meeting

Come and join us on 16th May, 7.45pm at the VMP tofind out what’s been happening over the last twelvemonths, share your ideas and have a drink on us.

Our telephone box

For the bargain price of £1, we have now bought thevillage phone box located next to the cricket club.Various suggestions have been made so far as to howwe might see it take on a new identity – museum, artgallery, library, home to a defibrillator – but what doyou think. Do you favour any of these suggestions ordo you have another idea? We’d really like to hearfrom you so please have a word with any of thecouncillors or contact the Clerk at:[email protected].

GRIMSTON CHURCH CONCERTWe are holding the first of many fund raisingconcerts at St Botolph's Church, Grimstonstarting at 7.30pm on Saturday, 6 May to raisefunds for the Church Organ. We will be joined bythe King's Lynn Male Voice Choir and the King'sLynn Brass Band playing and singing together.

Tickets will be £10 (£8 for concessions - under 16and OAPs). Available on the door or by phone07837 331023 and leave a message

We need to raise £30,000 to bring the Organ backto its original condition. The Organ is aWordsworth and it is about 200 years old and it isstill in its original condition which for 200 years isnot bad. Over the last couple of years things havestarted to fail. The pipes are starting to collapseunder their own weight and it keeps going out oftune and the bellows need completely replacing.

These are just some of the things that are wrongwith the Organ. Some people will say why don'tyou buy an electronic organ which would cost halfas much. The trouble is they don't last as long. They only have a life time expectancy of about 15to 20 years before you would probably have to buyanother one which is not very economical, where ifwe spend a little more on the organ we have got itwill last at least another one hundred years . Sothat is why we are fund raising now before it is toolate and we lose this beautiful instrument for ever.If you think you can help in any way in fund raisingplease get in touch with the friends (Chairman,Peter Coe: 01485 600337 or Samuel Bone: 07837331023). Your help will be most welcome. Thankyou.Samuel Bone, Grimston Church Organist

Selfish, ignorant dog ownersNo, not the ones who clear up after their dogs but theones who:

● Let their dog off the lead and then walkahead so they don’t have to see their doggoing to the toilet.

● Pick up the dog poo and then hang the bagin the hedge or leave it by the verge.

● Are too gormless to realise that being a dogowner means picking up your dog’s poo.

We all want to enjoy the lovely walks round our villageso please, if you have made the choice to be a dogowner, make the choice to not make the rest of ushave to put up with your dog’s poo. Thank you.

East Winch Parish CouncilMeeting 6 March

By Nell SteeleThe Parish Council is thinking of encouragingproduction of a Neighbourhood Plan which, ifaccepted by the Borough Council, will give itmore control over planning, and possibly morerevenue too.Alex Fradley and Felix Bick from the BoroughCouncil spoke to councillors and the publicabout what it would involve. The plan wouldmost likely cover the boundary of the parish.Questionnaires should be used to collect data -not necessarily on the same topics as thequestionnaire sent round East Winch about 4years ago. Mr Fradley advised that thecommittee driving the preparation should becomposed of people who are not, in the main, parish councillors. The time scale forpreparation and acceptance of a plan is usuallyat least 2 years. Advice is available online andfrom the Borough Council, and funding isavailable. Councillors need to consider theinformation before taking this further.Mrs Davison has been asking villagers whatthey would like the phone box to be used for.She reported that there wasn't much interest inusing it as an information point, but that somepeople thought it would be a good place to keepa defibrillator. However, they cost about £2,000each, we aren't far from the hospital, and amore secure and central place would be theVillage Hall. She and Mrs Steele will continue towork on it.The Village Hall notice board still gets dampinside, and it is to be returned. A different modelwill be chosen.Mr Harrod reported that the No Smoking signsat the bus stop were continually being pulleddown and the council agreed that morepermanent notices should be installed. Aparishioner had queried whether the councilwas responsible for the dangerous railings atthe Old Maid's Head. Highways were aware oftheir dangerous state, but it was confirmed thatthe Parish Council itself had responsibility onlyfor the things it owned, and that the railingswere the property of Highways England. MrCoke, our county councillor is to be contactedabout it.Residents were concerned that the bank of mud

piled up in front of the new houses being built inStation Rd was sliding into the ditch. Mr Harrodmade it clear that except in urgent cases, theCouncil wouldn't be able to discuss matters theyhad not had the chance to investigatebeforehand. It led to councillors giving their ownopinions as if they were the views of theCouncil. The Council noted that the promised chevronshad still not been put up in Gayton Rd. and thatat least one post along the trod was still brokenand hadn't been replaced. The clerk is to writeto Mr Coke about it.Mr Melvyn Place was appointed as a newParish Councillor. The next meeting will be on Thursday, 11thMay, starting with the Parish Assembly at 7.00.Please note the unusual date.

Informing the Parish Council of matterswhich concern you.

The Parish Council has to act as a body, whichmeans that individual councillors cannot makepromises which haven't been agreed, and avote needs to be taken about any action thathas been considered. It is difficult to hold a longdiscussion about anything councillors did notexpect, and unless an item is on the agenda, other members of the public may not be awarethat a concern has been raised. So, unless a matter is particularly urgent, pleaseinform a councillor or the clerk at least 10 daysbefore a meeting.

CALLING ALL CHILDRENWe would be very glad if youwould help us make an EasterGarden in Middleton Churchon Good Friday at 10:00AM.

Please bring a small bunch offlowers to put in it, and thenwe will have the Easter Storyfollowed by a drink and hotcross buns, and finish with anEaster egg hunt.

We will be very pleased to seeyou.

North Runcton and West Winch Neighbourhood Plan- March Update

The BCKLWN consultation on the Neighbourhood Plan ended on the 13th February. Weeventually had the grand total of 15 comments – most of which were pleasantly supportive – sothank you to all who took the time to respond. The process now moves to the next stage –examination.

We were offered a choice of three independent planners willing to undertake the mandatoryexamination stage. We have requested that the examination is undertaken by Deborah McCann –who has already examined a number of Neighbourhood Plans, including St Ives in Cornwall. TheSt Ives NP made the national press in relation to policies on holiday homes that were challengedby developers. The Plan later withstood a High Court challenge.Ms McCann has begun her examination and will be requesting written responses to any queries. She does not presently intend to hold a public hearing. The examination may be complete asearly as Easter. She will review the document and supporting information, review the commentsmade during the consultation process and decide whether the Plan is ‘sound’ in terms of nationaland other local policy. This may mean that we have a local referendum to vote on adopting the Neighbourhood Plan byearly summer! Please look out for further information. Please note you can still see all the submitted Neighbourhood Plan documents on North Runctonand West Winch Parish websites – along with more explanation about Neighbourhood Plans ingeneral and why the Parish Councils think the Plan is so important.

You can also find a Frequently Asked Questions page – which may help you to betterunderstand the process.

Go to: http://northrunctonpc.norfolkparishes.gov.uk/nrwwpc

In other news: We have learnt that representatives for ZAL, who own land around West Winch, intend to submit an outline planning application for up to 500 houses by early summer. No planshave yet been made public. This will be the second significant outline planning application in theBCKLWN ‘strategic growth area’, following the Hopkins Homes application for 1100 houses that isstill to be determined.

Victory for All!As the Lenten season ends in Easter rejoicing, note what has been wrought in us this year. Idon’t know if the religious rites and rituals mayattract people or not. However, there is a deephunger in our collective psyche to re-orient ourlives toward life and light, healing and peace. We share a holy hunger for clarity about what isgood and life-giving, and we yearn to re-focuson what is most central and important in life.Easter celebrates the victory of light and lifeover darkness and death. God re-creates andredeems all life from dead, dry and destroyedbones. We are released from the bonds of self-obsession, addiction and whatever would stealaway the radical freedom of God-with-us [Rt.Revd Katharine Jefferts Schori]. Our lives re-centre in what is most holy and creative; thenew thing God is continually doing in our midst.Practicing vulnerability toward the need andhunger of others around us, we have cultivatedcompassionate hearts. We join in baptismalrebirth in the midst of Jesus’ own passing-over.Jesus is the blueprint, the plan, the patternrevealed in one body and moment of history toreveal the meaning of all history and each of ourlives. The cross is the banner of what we do toone another and to God. The resurrection is thebanner of what God does to us in return [RevdRichard Rohr].The wonder of the resurrection is upon us oncemore. May we embrace God’s ever-new life withevery cell of our being, every yearning of oursoul, and every muscle of our will.Christ is risen! Death is vanquished; humanity isrestored to holy and creative relationship withGod’s ongoing and eternal liveliness. PraiseGod who brings light out of darkness, life out ofdeath, victory out of our failures and newnessout of the stale and moribund.Alleluia! Christ is risen!Rev. Riaz

I am running the Norwich Half Marathon on Sunday 9th April and theKing’s Lynn GEAR 10k three weeks later. But why do I, a 69 year-old,want to force my creaking bones into running 13.1 miles – plus the 10k?The answer is to support two very good causes.

I am seeking sponsorship for a Kidney Research project atAddenbrooke’s Hospital where my two sons had their kidney transplants. At the same time I am also raising awareness of Organ Donation. I wouldlike to see people sign up as organ donors. It’s so easy to do.

Cause 1 – Fundraising for Kidney Research

Some of you may recall that I ran the Dublin Marathon in 2015 and thanksto your generosity I raised money for a kidney research project atAddenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge. It is looking at ways to stop some donated kidneys being rejectedafter transplant. That project is still ongoing and progressing well but it requires more funding. So, that’sone reason I am still running, to try to bring in more sponsorship.

Incidentally, Addenbrooke’s is the hospital where I donated one of my kidneys to our son Joel in 1999. It’salso where our other son Oliver had his kidney transplant in 2002. Addenbrooke’s is a major transplanthospital and serves patients from West Norfolk and, indeed, from much of East Anglia.

I should be most grateful if you feel you can support my efforts. To sponsor me please call me on 01553841267 or email [email protected] or contact me at Fornside, Setch Road, Blackborough End,King’s Lynn, PE32 1SL. Cheques should be made out to ACT (Kidney Transplant Unit). Or if you wantto make an online donation you can do so by visiting my JustGiving page at:www.justgiving.com/fundraising/Stews-HalfMarathon.

Cause 2 – Raising awareness of Organ Donation

Every time I run I wear a vest bearing the slogan SIGN UP AS AN ORGAN DONOR. There are currentlyaround 7,000 patients on the waiting list for organ transplants, plus about another 3,000 people too ill toundergo a transplant operation. Well over 5,000 patients are waiting for kidney transplants and over 1,500patients are waiting for other organ transplants, such as heart, lung, liver and pancreas. Sadly, about1,000 people a year die while waiting for a transplant. This is why I am encouraging people to sign theorgan donor register. Please go to www.organdonation.nhs.uk or call 0300 123 23 23 to find out more.

If you are able to support either or both of these two causes you really will help to save lives.

Thank you. Stewart

Frederick William RudlandFrederick was born in Barking, London in 1882 andhad moved to Norfolk, where he found work as agroom and gardener for Mr Sutterby at Mill Farm. In1905 he married Mary Ann Softly at DownhamMarket. They lived in Blackborough End and fourchildren soon arrived. His younger brother Benjaminlived with them. Frederick was a member of theTerrington Oddfellows organisation.

Early in 1916 he wasconscripted into the SuffolkRegiment, but wastransferred to the 2nd

Lincolnshire Regiment. Atwhatever date he went toFrance, he would have beeninvolved in various actions inthe battle of the Somme. Thiswas officially ended on 23rd

November 1916, but activitycontinued in conditions whichdefy belief.

On 4th March 1917 his Battalion were part of a fairlylarge-scale attack near Bapaume on the Somme. The mud was so bad that there were no trencheswhich could be occupied, so the attackers formed upon tapes in no man’s land, two or three hours beforethe start time of 5.15 AM. The attack was carried outin falling snow and Fred, aged 29, was one of 1,152killed, with nothing gained. He has no known graveand is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial.

Walter Osborne SmithOn Easter Monday, 9th April 1917, the Battle of Arrasbegan. Although often overlooked today, it was oneof the most successful of the war, with 3.5 milesbeing gained on the first day and Walter Smith wasto be part of that success.

He was born in Hornchurch, Essex but his fatherlived in Yorkshire where he was a respected trainerof dogs and also ran a pub, ‘The Woodman’ atBurneston, Bedale, which still exists. Walter also hadhis father’s dog-handling skills and when Mr

Ramsden opened the kennels at Middleton Towers,he secured employment there and became wellknown in the area for his work. He married EstherLouise at Walpole St Andrew in 1912 and they hadtwo children, living at the Kennels.

Walter, aged 29, was conscripted into the 9th EssexRegiment on 30th May 1916.He was soon posted toFrance and survived heavyfighting without injury.

On 9th April 1917, hisBattalion were part of thesecond wave of attack. Theymoved through tunnelsbetween the centre of Arrasand the trenches andunusually, were able to crosscaptured enemy territory, even securing some Germanartillery. Resistance increased until they werestopped at Feuchy Chapel, where Walter was killedand now lies buried.

Bernard Wallace William RollinImmediately to the right of Walter Smith’s Battalion inthe attack of 9th April, was the 7th Norfolk, amongstwho was Bernard Rollin. Bernard survived that dayand after rest, recuperation and training, re-enteredthe fray on 28th.

He was born in Middleton in 1895 and worked as ashoeing smith with his father at ‘The Smithy’, at thecorner of Setch Road and Wormegay Road,Blackborough End.

In 1916 he married Ada Rummery, daughter of LeviRummery, parish clerk and sexton, of Middleton. Thesame year he joined the Norfolk Yeomanry, hopingto utilise his experience with horses, but wastransferred to the infantry and was posted to France.

On 28th April, the 7th NorfolkRegiment was part of anotherattack in almost exactly thesame area as their previousengagement. On that day,the Battalion suffered veryheavy losses. Bernard, aged22, was posted ‘woundedand missing’ on 9th June andit was some weeks later thathis death was confirmed. Hehas no known grave and iscommemorated on the ArrasMemorial.

WE WILL REMEMBER THEMBy Chris Dixon

To mark the centenary of the First World War, theParish News has been publishing tributes to localpeople as close as possible to the 100th anniversaryof the date on which they lost their lives. Althoughthe war was by now well into its third year, it is anindication of the sheer ferocity of the fighting that inthis issue we remember eight local men who in theperiod from March to May 1917 made the ultimatesacrifice.

Ernest Edward RyeBorn in 1888, Ernest was one of the 22 children ofJohn and Mary (Polly) Rye of Tower End. In 1915he had married Bertha Goodberry from Watlingtonand they had a son, James, who sadly died in histeenage years.

Ernest had worked atMiddleton Tower and thesandpits at Leziate and in1916, he enlisted in theNorfolk Regiment. In earlyMarch 1917, he joined theRegiment near the Palestineand Egyptian border, where,on the 26th, he saw his firstaction in the First Battle ofGaza. This was a failure, butthe Norfolks had littleinvolvement. Preparations

went ahead for a bigger effort and on 19th April theSecond Battle took place.

At 7.50 am, Ernest’s Regiment attacked from aposition about five miles south east of Gaza, towardsthe Turkish trenches in an area later known as TankRedoubt. They immediately came under artillery andmachine gun fire, but continued on. A large numberof them took shelter behind the only tank in theoperation, which attracted even more fire from allaround. Only a small number of the Norfolksreached the redoubt, but they took it and capturedabout 40 prisoners. Here the tank finally expired, butthe attackers clung on, despite continuousbombardment and with the attacks around themhaving failed.

About 2.00 pm they were ordered to retire to wherethey had started. 19 out of the 20 officers and 643other ranks of the Norfolks had become casualties.Ernest Rye was one of these and he died of hiswounds two days later on 21st April 1917. He isburied in Deir El Belah Cemetery, Palestine.

Frederick J RuddFrederick was the son of Henry and Elizabeth, bornin Middleton in 1890. He moved to Reigate, Surreyand in 1916 he married Anneat Kingston on Thames.

Frederick joined the 1st

Surrey Rifles as a bandsmanand, depending on when hearrived in France, he mayhave taken part in the finalstages of the Somme battle.

On 4th May, 1917, he died ofwounds near Ypres, Belgiumat a place and a time when

there was no particular action going on – this wasknown at the time as ‘wastage’. It has beensuggested that even on the "quietest days" of thewar, the British were losing 7,000 men killed andwounded per day to wastage. He is buried atLijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Poperinge, Belgium.

Bert Timothy EdwardsBert was born at Denver in 1892. By 1911 he was an18 year old agricultural labourer living near thechurch at Southery with his step-parents, Williamand Harriet Porter.

The family moved to Middleton and in 1915 Bertmarried Daisy Rummery. They they lived in ChurchRow, Middleton, with one child while he worked forMr Gamble at Hall Farm, East Winch.

Bert was called up on 7th April 1916 and went toFrance on 28th November tojoin the 1st Essex Regiment. He was transferred to theMechanical Transport sectionof the Royal Engineers andwas killed on 31st May 1917,another victim of ‘wastage’,aged 24. He is buried inVillers-Faucon CommunalCemetery, near Peronne,France.

Daisy Edwards lived on for66 years a widow and isburied just yards from ChurchRow. Levi Rummery now had three widoweddaughters and his son would be killed in December.

Our speaker on 18 April is Jane Barley whois going to share her experience of 'Midwiferyin Ethiopia'. On 16 May, Lorraine Parker willtell us of her role as 'A visitor to WaylandPrison'. As you see we have a wide variety oftopics. We also have a short service at thebeginning and tea and biscuits at the end.

We welcome new members who quicklybecome friends, so if this appeals to you don'thesitate to join us.Hilary Hickman
