WEEKLY WISDOMFORMED HAS MOVIES

Throughout scripture we are taught and asked to pray. We wash our bodies and eat to keep our bodies healthy. Shouldn’t we keep our souls healthy with prayer?“Prayer is food for our souls.” “Prayer is a refuge from our daily struggles.” “Prayer helps bond us with God.” “Prayer is a conversation with God.” “Prayer is a surge of the heart.”

Formed gives us this great video that teaches us how to pray and to understand the value it brings to us and to God. Well worth your time to watch. I found it very inspirational to help make my life better. I hope you enjoy it as much as me.Where to find it: Formed.org/watch/movies/special topics

Music NotesSummer Schola: August 26 is our last liturgy together until summer 2019. My deepest thanks to all the singers who gave their time and talent to sing in our liturgies! 25 AMAZING THINGS TOO MANY CATHOLICS DON’T KNOW ABOUT THE KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS – NUMBERS 6 THROUGH 10

6. Columbus was chosen as the Knights’ namesake because... the American public loved this famous Catholic explorer at a time of general antipathy towards Catholics. Today, many make him out to be a villain, but many of those claims are actually historically inaccurate. www.truthaboutcolumbus.com.

7. The K of C emblem is literally everywhere at the Annual March for Life in Washington, D.C. That’s because the Knights are one of the major supporters of the March for Life and pro-life movement.

8. K of C has donated $1.6 billion (yes, billion!) to charitable causes over the past decade. As of December 2017!!

9. They have swords!! Maybe the most important point!10. The Knights of Columbus Fortune 1000 Insurance Company

was born out of Father McGivney’s vision to help protect Catholic families from financial ruin. As a seminarian, his father died unexpectedly. Father McGivney was convinced that there had to be a way to help other Catholic families facing similar financial troubles. He established the K of C insurance system that has evolved into a top-rated insurance program, with over $100 billion of life insurance in force. Go to www.kofc.org and see “Our Story.”

Tune in next week for items 11 through 15!

The three-day weekend experience is a joyous introduction into a supportive and growing community of friends in Christ – men and women who are working to bring Christ into their everyday lives. It is designed to enhance spiritual growth, provide an adult understanding of our Catholic faith, and provide opportunities for Christian fellowship and service. The weekends are sponsored by lay Catholics with the assistance of ordained priests and deacons. The next Men’s Cursillo weekend is scheduled for September 20-23, 2018, and the next Women’s Cursillo weekend is October 18-21, 2018, scheduled to take place at the Williamsburg Christian Retreat Center, in Toano, VA. THE K-5 CATECHIST TEAMIS LOOKING FOR YOU!!

Do you enjoy working with children? Would you like to teach the richness of the Catholic faith to the children of our parish? Can you give of your time on Sunday mornings? Are you looking for a way to become more involved in the parish and also learn more about your Catholic faith? Then the K-5 Catechist Team is the ministry for YOU! We need 6 catechists to teach Kindergarten and 1st grade. Without these catechists, we will not be able to offer these grades for Christian Formation. We are also looking for assistants to complete three person teams for BOTH 4th and 5th Grades.

Additional Testimony from a K-5 Catechist: “I just finished my first year as a catechist for our 2nd graders, and it was so meaningful--and fun! I’ve been Catholic only part of my life, so that combined with the butterflies of doing something new of such importance made it seem daunting at first. I had a wonderful co-teacher with lots of experience, who coached and encouraged me, which helped me greatly. I’m coming back this year and hope to keep growing as a catechist as I grow in Christ. I wouldn’t miss it for the world!”Please prayerfully consider sharing your gifts and your love of the Catholic faith with the elementary youth of our parish. The curriculum is easy to follow and supplies are provided. Christian Formation classes meet on Sunday mornings, between the Masses (9:30 a.m.-10:45 a.m.). We follow the Virginia Beach Public Schools calendar and our schedule runs from September-May. A background check and VIRTUS training is required. Contact Tiffany in the Parish Office or [email protected] if interested.

“CREATION CARE CORNER:”Electronic devices are so widespread that one probably could not find a person outside a health or mental institution, who does not own one. Some people seem to dispose of those they have as soon as a newer, upgraded device is manufactured, giving little thought to this practice contributing to consumer waste.Mr. Green, who writes articles in the Sierra Club’s bimonthly magazine, claims that “the total revenue from mobile payments worldwide is expected to hit $ 1 trillion next year,” which points out how prevalent they are. At the present time, only 10% of electronic devices get recycled, even though, in the case of iPhones, Mr. Green states that a ton of them could deliver 300 times more gold than a ton of gold ore and 6.5 times more silver than a ton of silver ore. Apple has the technology to dismantle 2.4 million iPhones a year, but that is less than 1% of the 216 million iPhones sold in 2017 alone. Mr. Green also states that “the life expectancy of a smartphone is 2 1/2 years,” but many are discarded in 12 to 18 months because new products with improved features come on the market. Up to 80% of a mobile phone is recyclable. Eleven percent of electronic waste is made up of mobile phones, which means that 89% end up in landfills or are just sitting around. In view of these figures, what do you do when your electronic device stops operating? These are some available options. The city provides electronic recycling days for its residents to dispose of them. Also, some recommend that if your electronic device is not working properly, try to have it repaired before scrapping it. Some companies will provide free postage for your phone to be returned for recycling, when you purchase a new one from them. EcoAtm, located at the checkout line in various grocery store chains, is an automated kiosk. Target in Norfolk (757-461-9369) and Best Buy have recycling Kiosks in their stores, as well as Walmart Supercenter in Chesapeake, Walmart Supercenter in Virginia Beach (757-498-9633), and Kroger Marketplace in Portsmouth. You also can google, how to recycle cell phones/earth 911.com to receive more information.“The earth, our home, is beginning to look more and more like an immense pile of filth. Less is more. A constant flood of new consumer goods can baffle the heart and prevent us from cherishing each thing and each moment.” ~ from Pope Francis’ “Laudato Si”

Without your attendance and contributions to our fundraising events during the year, we had could not have had such a successful year. With your generous support during the year we were able to raise $20,503.56 through events such as Marvino Night, Council BBQ, Octoberfest, St. Patrick’s Day Party, Family Breakfasts, KOVAR, and a State Grant. This enabled the Council to distribute $20,911.45 to provide funds to KOVAR, Kids Fishing Day, Special Olympics, Knights of Columbus Culture of Life (see today’s bulletin), VetsHouse, Seminarian Support, The Paul Stefan Foundation, Scholarships to parish students, Haiti Fund, Greater Hampton Roads Diaper Bank, Operation Smile, Parish Alter Server recognition, Parish Food Pantry, Virginia Knights of Columbus Charties, Inc., The Pregnancy Center, and the Parish for the sound system. These donations embodies the first principle of our Organization, Charity. Knights are followers of Christ and men of faith. As St. James reminds us, “faith without works is dead.” On behalf of all the brothers of Council #10804, the past Officers and Trustees, thank you for your generous support this past year and your continued support in the future!!!! Fraternally,
