FROM THE RECTOR

October 2010 The word October literally means the eighth month, similarly November and December translated mean the ninth and tenth month. Clearly there is a mismatch in the counting as they are two months out of sequence. The answer lies in the addition of two extra months to the Roman ten month calendar to create the Gregorian calendar of twelve months. January and February were added to the calendar. Originally the year started in spring with March. This also coincides with the Jewish year starting in spring. You can see the logic behind it, that the year starts at the beginning of the new season. The sixth and seventh months were renamed after Roman emperors but the numbers persist for the last three months, although they are no longer in the ten month sequence. It seems strange that they were not renamed to the correct number sequence or given another name. There must have been resistance to change over 2700 years ago. Some things never change! I guess that the names were familiar and the numerical significance was just ignored. When I was returning from holiday the check in desk at the airport would not work. The computer refused to printout the baggage labels. The queue grew longer and longer and made it difficult for people to pass or join the queue. It was quite hard as people joined the queue in front of other people queuing round the corner. As we waited for twenty minutes for anything to happen people became more anxious and impatient. Eventually they gave up on the checking desk and opened three new check in desks to cope with the back log of people. The situation changed from an almost orderly queue to survival of the fastest. I felt like people had got ahead of my rightful place in the queue! It was like January and February arriving from nowhere and taking their places in front of the rightful other months. I must admit I was frustrated and upset by the lack of organisation. I really needed to step back and look at the bigger picture. What was really important was that everyone got checked onto the flight, and not who was first. What we learn about God is that he wants everyone to have a chance. It is not a competition in which there are only a few winners and the rest miss out. The race is to get the last one across the line. What we learn is that God is so particularly concerned for those who struggle behind that he sends people to help and bring them home. Sadly we forget those around us and dash off and leave them behind. God could rightly ask of us, “What about the others you left them behind?” Perhaps God is asking us to look around and help someone else rather than to help ourselves. As we were boarding the plane I was struggling to get everyone together to go through the departure gate. The person behind me said, “Do not worry we will wait until you have all got together”!

TRIBUTE Doreen Blockley and her late husband, Fred, moved to Pathfinder in 1975 and in no time were fully involved in life in the Village. They played a pivotal role in establishing Pathfinder Village Church where Fred played the organ for many years. Doreen represented Pathfinder on Whitestone Parish Church Council and became Pathfinder treasurer. An overflowing church on the 1

st of

September testified to her dedication to the church and community and the esteem in which she was held. She will be very much missed.

PARISH HALL MATTERS Roof lights Work has been carried out to break through the Hall ceiling to expose the large Velux roof lights previously installed in the new Parish Hall roof. During daylight hours, the Hall is now a lighter and brighter venue for all users. The quotation for the work exceeded £1000 but, as it was carried out by members of the Hall Committee (Peter & Jock), costs were kept to below £50. Many thanks to Dick Jordan for allowing the use of his scaffolding tower.

On 1st September Rev Dr John Senyonyi officially took office as our new Vice Chancellor. Do pray for him and his wife Ruth as they take on this new role. We are thrilled with the appointment and are sure they will be excellent leaders for UCU. The Foundations Studies department surprised us by laying on a big Handover Party a few days after our arrival, to thank Dan and welcome Amos as the new Head of Department. There was a lovely dinner, many speeches and gifts - including a huge banner of photos of Dan with various tutors and lecturers. Amos officially took over as head of department on 1st July. By all accounts he is doing a wonderful job. Please continue to pray for him and for the vital work of the department in teaching the core courses to all our students. A New Term... Students are arriving this week and the new term begins Mon 6th Sept. Dan and I will both be teaching Foundations courses, Dan in Understanding the Christian Worldview, and Rosie in Old Testament. Please pray for us as we teach. The Theology students are in their home dioceses doing block placements this semester. Pray for them that they will have excellent learning opportunities and know God's blessings. It often seems to be a difficult experience for them as they are sometimes placed in very remote parishes with little transport and food, and sometimes face resistance as incomers from the Theological College. So do pray for grace for them and that God will provide their needs, - and also for safety for the lecturers as they travel to supervise them in their placements. Also since we got back we have had a lovely visit from a team of three, from our link church St Giles, Normanton. They were a pleasure to have here and show around, and a real encouragement. This week they are visiting a diocese in Northwestern Uganda before returning home next week. Abigail and Alex have started back at school as well, with new teachers. So far so good! Please pray for safe travels to and from school. We now lift-share with two other families which is a great help. Regarding our future plans, we do not have anything official to tell you as yet, but we are going ahead with applying for Secondary schools for Abigail as this takes place in October. It is not straightforward doing this from Uganda, so please pray that the path would be made clear for us and that God would enable us to get Abigail a place in spite of the hurdles. Thank You as always for your prayers and support, With our love and prayers Rosie and Dan, Abby and Alex.

LE-ROY FUNERAL SERVICE

M.WREFORD & SONS

Dear Friends, It has been a while since our last prayer news, as we took a two month "mini-home leave" from mid-June to mid-August. We managed to visit four of our link churches and were glad to make contact with many of you on those occasions. Dan spent much of the time working on his PhD, and Rosie, Abby and Alex enjoyed a lovely break in Devon with Rosie's parents, seeing various friends and relations. Farewells and Handovers... We came back in time to join in the farewells for Stephen and Peggy Noll, who finally left Uganda on 29th August. One highlight was a service and dinner held in Kampala, attended by several African Archbishops and bishops as well as many of the university staff and a group of supporters visiting from the US. The Nolls' last Wednesday night Staff Fellow-ship was a lovely informal time when many staff shared memories and gave tributes. They have been well loved and respected here and shall be missed.

GREEN CORNER

Let’s face it; if you live in the countryside, you’re likely to feel the need of a car. If you have a car already you’ll be well aware how much it costs to tax and insure it, never mind the fuel costs. And you’re probably also aware that there are some very economical cars out there nowadays. The most economical conventional (non hybrid) four door car averages over 83mpg and, as its CO2 emission figure of 89g/km is below 100, road tax is free. Of course you may not be able to afford a new car so all that may be academic for you. If it is, the only way you can reduce your motoring costs,- apart from making sure you go to one of the cost comparison sites on the internet when you renew your insurance, is to try and keep your fuel costs down. If you’re interested in keeping your fuel costs down, here are a few things for you to try:

• If your car has a computer that gives you the mpg at any given time, do some little experiments with it. Find a long, level road and while keeping your speed constant, see what happens to the consumption with different gears. If you’ve got air conditioning, turn it on to see what happens. You’re likely to find it going up by 15% or so if you maintain the same speed. If you open the windows a fraction you won’t see much effect, so think about doing that instead, - but don’t have them fully open at high speed as this has quite a big effect on fuel consumption.

• You can coast up to roundabouts or downhill in neutral. You don’t need to keep the car in gear to provide engine braking these days.

• Keep moving if you can. This is one of the best. If you brake and then have to accelerate again, you’ve wasted fuel. So if the traffic lights ahead are on red, slow down as soon as you can, as long as you’re not inconveniencing cars behind, and try to arrive at the lights still with some speed when they turn green.

• One of the best though, is to plan your trips. Think about putting trips off if you can, so you carry out several tasks on a single trip.

• Of course it goes without saying that the best of all is to leave the car at home by sharing a lift with a neighbour or friend, or getting on the bus or your bike, or even walking!

The Royal Naval Association

Exeter Branch St. Catherine’s is one of the few churches entitled to fly the White Ensign and the one currently used was kindly provided by the Royal Naval Association. They would like to welcome New Members to their venue at:

Royal British Legion Alphington

They meet at 7.30pm in the last Thursday of each month. You can be sure of a warm welcome if you come along.

PILATES CLASSES Unfortunately we have had to cancel the Thursday evening class as there were not quite enough to make the class viable. We need 6 people at £5 a time or 8 people at £4 and payment would have to be in ad-vance. The class could be moved to the slightly later time of 6:30 to 7:30pm on the Thursday so if you think you’d be able to attend reasonably regularly and be able to pay in advance, please call Peter Hanson on 811878.

MARY’S DAIRY DIARY - SEPTEMBER 2010 Too quickly the days shorten, the year speeds away from the summer. Summer’s last richness hangs on the hedges and trees - blackberries, catch them this month before they go fly blown, apples, you know which variety is ripe now because the wasps start eating them, making their odd cuts into the apple, eventually hollowing it out. If you pick an apple with wasps in it, they are gorged and dopey, although I get cautious about which apple I sink my teeth into. I pick wild rose hips and haws, making a delicious jelly (wonderful with cheese). There’s plenty for the birds - next month, uneaten fruit will drop on the ground or rot on the bush. CROPS - There has been good keep left in the field after harvest: chaff and shrivelled grains that dropped out of the combine harvester, or ears bent over and missed by the header (the hexagonal arrangement at the front of the combine, that can’t pick up anything that falls underneath its steel fingers set in a line). When we ploughed, all that disappeared under six to eight inches of soil, just giving food to the birds that follow the plough to pick up the worms suddenly visible, but nothing for the seed eaters. This year, we will scrabble the soil to induce the weeds and that dropped corn, now a weed, to germinate. Later, we will use our minimal cultivator - deep tines to move but not turn the soil, little blades to smooth it back, discs to drop the seed into a cultivated slot, then tines to smooth it back down, and markers to know were the rows are. It will be interesting to see if our arable fields will feed more wildlife with this new method. It’s not that ploughing is bad for wildlife, it’s just that modern machinery means it happens all at once at the perfect time to grow the crop, and the wildlife have had a six week famine amid the plenty of autumn. In the old days, a man ploughing an acre a day with a horse, the job took all winter, leaving plenty of time for wildlife to find new food. We will take our last harvest, the stately rows of maize, their cobs so temptingly like sweet corn, but starchy, not sweet. For the last time, the great harvesting procession comes onto the farm. The forage harvester is stately with its eight wicked large spikes jutting out of the front to cut the crop, tractors and trailers holding fourteen tonnes to take the cut crop to the pit, the great big rough terrain handler and the largest tractor to squash it all down before we lay the plastic that keeps it safe, beautiful feed for the cows in the hungry months to come. Lots of farmers are short of feed this year, with the dry spring. With a reasonable harvest, we’ll be all right, but feed will be expensive. Harvest has been completely obliterated in the furnace of a summer they’ve had in the Russian and Ukrainian breadbaskets. COWS - The autumn calving cows are now nearly all calved, just a few heavy girls in the field waiting for their udders to fill and the calf to come, patient, curious, crowding around when you come to see them, standing in a tight group to try to keep the flies off. There’s always one who barges forward, the others making way, then she’s there right in front of you, she’s feeling

out on her own and exposed in the little circle around you, and you trust she’ll stop before she barges into you, obedient to the fiction we establish with cows that we are stronger than they are. The milk is good, settled in composition from the new leafy grass that follows rain and the clover that still gives its scented flowers to the grazing. The heifers are still outside on the grazing, getting wilder, more a herd, as they graze and grow. While they are outside, they are feeding on grass, so they don’t look to people for food. They see the point of us more when they are inside and we turn with dinner. CHEESE - I like September’s cheese, of course the mature cheese we are eating will be last September’s. It has the benefit of the stalky late summer grass and the leafy autumn grass, a balance and richness that I love. We are in our newly spruced-up cheese dairy after August’s closedown, where we do the work that is too dirty or intrusive (scaffolding and so on) to do when we are making cheese. In the store, we carry on with our blowing of cheese, our solution to our cheese mite problem - fork lifting racks of cheese to where I have a dust extractor sucking, then my champion mite busting team blowing air from an air line to blow off cheese. It’s not a pleasant job (mite and noise) but it means we can keep the mite down to low levels, and we are starting to see cheese come through without mite damage at a year and more old. Now we are getting all cheese that will age onto fork-liftable racks, a big shift round of all our cheese stocks, but worth it to be able to manage this devastating problem. PRIZES - At the Great Yorkshire Show we won 1st for Quickes Traditional Oak Smoked Cheddar and 2nd for Quickes Traditional Vintage Cheddar. At the Taste of the West Awards we won Gold for Quickes Traditional Mature Cheddar, Silver for Quickes Traditional Oak Smoked Cheddar, Silver for Quickes Traditional Extra Mature Cheddar and Bronze for Quickes Traditional Hard Goats Cheese. RECIPE - There’s such a lot of tomatoes, courgettes, onions, garlic and now in Tom’s polytunnel, basil, aubergines and peppers. I like this vegetable lasagne, from Philippa Vine, a version appeared in the Farmers Weekly: Cut the vegetables up into wedges or thick slices except the tomatoes and roast in a pan with olive oil and seasoning, add the chopped garlic just before the end of the cooking time. Make a cheese sauce with butter, flour and milk, and add grated or chopped Quickes Traditional Mature Cheddar. Layer the softened roasted vegetables, lasagne sheets, then sliced beef tomatoes, chopped marjoram and torn basil then cheese sauce, I like to top with a little more cheese and dried breadcrumbs. Bake in a lower oven for around 30 minutes, and serve with salad.

WHITESTONE PARISH COUNCIL 16 SEPT 2010

Minutes of Whitestone Parish Council meeting held at Whitestone Parish Hall on Thursday 16th September 2010 to be ratified at the Council meeting on Thursday 14th October 2010

Attendance: Chairman – Councillor Mrs M Belt Councillors P Hanson, D Munro, A Reed, Mrs B Netherway, R Phillips, Mrs T Taylor District Councillor P Bromell, Mrs P Vaughan, Clerk to the Council Mr P Neirop Apologies: Councillors E Beeching (illness)

The Parish Council Meeting was preceded by the September Draw for the 100 Club in support of the Parish Hall Appeal and the winning number was 52 and belongs to Tony Curtis.

The meeting was opened by the Chairman and condolences were extended to Mr Peter Lowless and his daughters on the death of Mrs Lowless.

PUBLIC PARTICIPATION Mr Neirop asked if the financial statement regarding the rental and upkeep of School Houses has been completed as requested by him in May 2010 and the Clerk said that she was in the process of collating this information.

Minutes of the Council meeting held on 8h July 2010 having been circulated were taken as read and signed as a true copy by the Chairman.

Annual Audit year ended 31st March 2010 Clerk reported on the successful conclusion of the Annual Audit by the Audit Commission for the year ended 31st March 2010 with no matters giving cause for concern that relevant legislation and regulatory requirements have not been met. Notices have been posted on notice boards within the parish. The account of £334.88 from the Audit Commission for this service was submitted and passed for payment..

Crossway Park It was reported that a donation of £505.62 has been received by the Parish Council from a fundraising event held at Royal Oak Nadderwater for a new piece of play equipment for the Park. This now brings the total of £1,305.62 in the fund. The Chairman gave thanks to Tracey Baird and to Councillor Tina Taylor for their work in organising this event. Discussion followed regarding the purchase of the play castle that has been chosen for the Park and will cost £3,900 which includes installation. It was proposed and seconded that this should now be installed as to wait until next year would incur extra expense as VAT will rise in 2011 and after discussion this was agreed. It was noted that further fundraising will take place but that the Council was anxious to support the upkeep and improvement of the Park. Councillor Netherway reported that the steps on the slide in the playground were becoming worn.

School Houses The tenancy reports received for 1 & 2 School Houses were reported. At No 1 there had been repairs to a door at a cost of £35 and portable appliances tested and in-spected at a cost of £35. The latter account was queried and the Chairman will investigate this. It was reported

that the tenants of No 2 will now be vacating the house but that Cooksleys have found a new tenant who will be moving in on the 7th October. This tenant has requested placing a TV on the wall and it was agreed that this could be done with the proviso that the wall was made good by the tenant when the TV was removed. It was noted that the exterior painting of the properties has not begun and the Clerk will contact the contractor to ask for a date as it was promised to be done in September.

Parish Hall It was reported that a Devon County Council Grant of £500 has been received through the auspices of County Councillor Brook for signs for the Parish Hall and Councillor Phillips said that these have been ordered.

A grant of £1,500 towards the installation of the new flat roof has been received from the Rural Aid Scheme and a cheque for this amount will be forwarded to the Hall Management Committee.

A response from Insurance Company has now been received indicating that insurance cover for the Parish Hall should be transferred into the name of the Hall Management Committee and the Clerk has been verbally contacted by them and has sent the necessary letter requested by them to confirm that the Hall and contents including the public address system should be transferred as advised. It is understood that the Hall Management Committee have completed a new pro-posal form to this effect and the Council are awaiting verification that the transfer has been completed when a new Policy will be received by both parties.

The Agreement provided by the Hall Management Committee has now been fully discussed by the Parish Council and bearing in mind the comments made by the Insurance Company it was proposed and seconded that the agreed letter is to be sent to the Hall Management Committee and the motion was carried. It was also agreed that the letter be published in the Minutes as follows:-

“A decision has now been reached regarding the draft communiqué that was submitted to the Parish Council for signing.

In view of recent opinions received from the Insurance Company the Council are of the belief that there is no need for such a document between the Management Committee and the Parish Council.

The Parish Council have no wish to be involved in the responsibility for the running of the Hall and acknowledge the terms set out in the Conveyance of the Hall in 1972. That being said they will be pleased to continue to provide support to the Management Commit-tee if requested as it is acknowledged that the Hall pro-vides a worthwhile community facility for the Parish.

They do, however, wish to raise the following points:

• That the appointed representative of the Parish Council shall be a member of the Standing Sub-Committee and that as previously agreed a copy of the minutes of the Committee of Management are forwarded for information purposes to the Clerk to the Parish Council. This will then serve the need for informing and consulting with the Par-ish Council when matters affecting the fabric of the building are being considered.

With regard to the area surrounding the Parish Hall the Parish Council are perfectly willing to continue responsibility for the insurance, maintenance and upkeep of the garages, the car park and the surrounding hedges as they realise that with your financial restraints this could become a problem.”

Bus Stop area Councillor Hanson asked if there were any ideas how this area could be improved and parishioners were invited to come forward with any proposals they may have on making the area look more inviting. In particular the run down appearance of the telephone kiosk was mentioned and the Clerk was instructed to approach BT again as had been done in 2009 regarding the painting.

A BIT OF TLC FOR THE PARISH HALL In September, a supervised bunch of ‘volunteers’ worked hard in painting windows, removing soil from above the damp course along the west wall, improving the roadside noticeboard, repainting the parking spaces and other tasks in and around the hall. This was arranged by the Hall Committee (in particular, Derek Fisher and Mary Belt) in conjunction with the Probation Service’s Community Payback scheme. A return visit has been arranged.

JUST FOR FUN Here are some great ways of dealing with the burdens of life: * Accept that some days you're the pigeon and, some days, you're the statue. * Always keep your words soft and sweet, just in case you have to eat them. * If you can't be kind, at least have the decency to be vague. * Never put both feet in your mouth at the same time because then you won't have a leg to stand on. * Nobody cares if you can't dance well. Just get up and dance. * Birthdays are good for you. The more you have, the longer you live. * You may be only one person in the world, but you may also be the world to one person. * Some mistakes are too much fun to only make once. * We could learn a lot from crayons... Some are sharp, some are pretty and some are dull. Some have weird names, and all are different colours, but they all have to live in the same box.

ARE ALL THESE FACTS TRUE? DREAMT is the only English word to end with ‘mt’ If the population of China walked past you, eight abreast, the line would never end because of the birth rate. The QE2 moves only six inches for every gallon of diesel that it burns. No English word rhymes with orange, There are only two words in the English language that have all five vowels in order: abstemious & facetious February 1865 is the only month in recorded history not to have a full moon. A WOMAN’S POEM

He didn't like the casserole And he didn't like my cake, He said my biscuits were too hard Not like his mother used to make.

I didn't perk the coffee right He didn't like the stew, I didn't mend his socks The way his mother used to do.

I pondered for an answer I was looking for a clue. So I turned around and smacked him one Like his mother used to do.

SWOT THE FLY TIPPERS! Fly tipping, the antisocial activity that despoils the Devon Countryside, is on the increase and, as Autumn progresses and the vegetation dies back, no doubt more piles of unwanted rubbish will be exposed.

Whitestone has been hit by fly tippers a number of times this year but on two occasions at least the perpetrators have been traced and fined and hopefully discouraged from repeating the exercise.. Typical offenders are cow-boy builders and individuals offering house clearance and you can play your part by ensuring tradesmen are dispos-ing of rubbish at designated centres. One pile of rubbish recently cleared contained the remains of someone’s kitchen. Another, traced to an address in Teignmouth was the contents of a garage clearance.

Apart from untidiness, fly tipping is potentially hazardous to wild life, farming stock and children, not to mention damaging to farm machinery. Happily, people who are too lazy to dispose of things responsibly are often also too lazy to ensure they do not leave clues to their identity and this is where Whitestone residents can help! If you see dumped rubbish, phone 0800 328 6402 which is the number for Teignbridge District Council’s Environmental Hotline. where you can leave a message with the location of the rubbish. You don’t even have to leave your name if you prefer anonymity. In my experience they respond very rapidly. You can also e-mail [email protected].

Teignbridge employ wardens who have the invidious job of sorting through the piles of rubbish left by fly tippers looking for clues of their identity and they often find them! Receipts , envelopes, cartons with an address, prescrip-tions, all sorts of things can result in a fine at best or a Court case and criminal record for more serious cases. The minimum fine for a fly tipping offence is £75 which no doubt helps to keep the council tax down!

So, if you see evidence of Fly Tipping, make that call! It’s quick effective and satisfying. Fly Tippers beware!

NEW LINK ROAD OPENS A LONG awaited link road to ease congestion in Alphington Road in Exeter opened to residents and commuters. As part of the expansion of the Alphington Sainsbury’s store, a section of road has been built which offers a new route from Alphington Road into the heart of the Marsh Barton Trading Estate. The road, formerly known as the Grace Road Link, connects to Marsh Green Road West and aims to ease congestion on Alphington Road by removing some of the inbound traffic currently using Marsh Barton Road. As part of planned resurfacing works in February next year, the County Council will be carrying out some minor road widening between Alphington Cross and Church Road. This will complement the new link road and help improve outbound traffic flows on Alphington Road. Land has been secured from Sainsbury's through the plan-ning process, which supports future Council plans to widen Alphington Road between the Marsh Barton Road junction and the Alphington Cross junction. County Council plans to widen the Cowick Lane approach to Alphington Cross, in order to ease traffic movements at the junction, are expected to start in April 2011. Councillor Stuart Hughes, Devon County Council Cabinet Member for Highways and Transportation, said: “This new link road has been in the making for over 25 years so it is very pleasing to see it open. The road is a good example of the benefits that can be brought about by private developments, such as Sainsbury’s, which offer wider benefits to the general public.” Councillor Vanessa Newcombe, Devon County Councillor for Alphington & Cowick said: "I am pleased that this road is open at last, and that Sainsbury's made alterations to the original plans in order to mitigate the effect of the new road on residents, following representations from the local councillors."

MACMILLAN CANCER SUPPORT

WINE and CHEESE PARTY with a DIFFERENCE

If you did not come you missed a great ‘do’ in glorious sunshine. There was not a cloud in the sky. The event was held at Hindcross in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support on the 12th September. Thirty one guests enjoyed an afternoon of good wine, locally brewed bitter, Devon cider and Mary Quicke’s delicious cheeses. Many people were happy to take home the surplus produce. The event raised a very commendable total sum of £551.66p which included the prize draw and donations, including one of £50. Many other people, both from Whitestone and outside, made very generous donations for which we give our grateful thanks. Donations are still being received and, if you feel like swelling this magnificent sum, your donation will be most welcomed. We would like most sincerely to thank every one for their support and generosity for this well worth-while charity. Also a special thank you to the eager helpers who help to make the day. It was difficult to decide which was the more popular, the Wine and Cheese or the B.B.Q.

WHICH DO YOU THINK IS THE BEST FORMULA?

THANK YOU ALL VERY MUCH FOR

SUPPORTING SUCH A GOOD CAUSE.

SUSTAINABLE WHITESTONE (Coordinator Liz Watkins, tel. 811285) A few years ago British Gas started marketing a boiler that also produces electricity. That was no use to us of course because we don’t have natural gas here in Whitestone. Now though, Baxi are marketing something similar for LPG users called an “Ecogen” boiler. It’s not cheap but if you are thinking about changing your boiler it might be worth considering. It works on the well established principal of CHP (combined heat and power). You’ll have seen pictures of cooling towers at power stations with steam coming out of the top. What these do is get rid of about 60% of the heat energy of the fuel as part of the process of making electricity. This wastage is why electricity cost 10p/kWhr or more, instead around 2.5p/kWhr for natural gas and more like 4 or 5p/kWhr for LPG and oil. Of course if you can use this heat for a factory process or for heating buildings that makes a lot of sense so that’s why CHP installations are such a good idea. This new boiler can produce up to a kW of electricity and for every kWhr it produces you will be paid 10p. If you also use the electricity in your house you’ll be saving a further 12p, but if you don’t use it and it’s exported to the grid, you’ll probably get 3p or so. You’ll need to do the sums to see if it works out of course. FREE SOLAR PANELS. It can’t have escaped your attention that there are companies now offering to put solar panels on your roof free of charge. You might have wondered if there’s a catch. Why would they want to do this, after all? The answer is that they get all the money from the electricity generated by the panels (41.3p/kWhr) plus 3p/kWhr for anything you don’t use which is exported. They get all their installation costs back in about 10 years or so and are then into big profits for the next 15 years of the scheme. At the end of the scheme you get to keep the panels and throughout the 25 years that it runs you get to use as much of the electricity they generate as you can so you can at least look forward to cheaper bills, - especially if you can put things like freezers and washing machines on timers so when they are only on during maximum sunlight hours. So it’s basically a no-brainer. All you need is a South-facing roof. GARDENING CLUB Sec. Mary Stanbury, Tel: 811532) The remaining programme for 2010 is as follows: 18

th Oct Harry Colclough—A Garden Miscellany
