Being a history buff I was interested in the lists and was very surprised to see Marn Luther listed as the third most important person on the Life Magazines list of 100 most important people of the last millennium and the Reformaon considered to be the second most important event in the past 1000 years. But the truth is, that I shouldnt have been all that surprised at the im- portance of Marn Luther or the Reformaon, because when teaching world history, now a good number of years ago, my class spent a whole month on a unit on the Reformaon and its influence on Western history. Oſten, the Reformaon is understood as an event that ended the religious unity of the Catholic Church, but in reality the Reformaon was a revoluon that created challenges and changes to the Western European geo- graphic landscape and restructured the social, polical, economic, and religious ideology of all of Europe. The Reformaon was an insurgency of new thought that ended the religious unity of Europe and ushered in 150 years of socio-religious warfare. By the me the conflicts had ended, the polical, social, economic, and of course reli- gious structures in the west had fundamentally changed. Next year on Reformaon Sunday we, as a Lutheran congregaon, will be well into our celebraon of the 500 th Anniversary of Marn Luthers nailing of the 95 Thesis to the All Saints Church door in Wienberg, Germany. Over the next 365 days there will be a multude of opportunies offered concerning the educaon of the Refor- maon and Marn Luther, and I would recommend for you a few to consider as learning resources. First, the ELCA has a site that will help supplement your Reformaon reading. The website is ELCA500.org. The site has a meline that illustrates what was happening in Europe each day unl October 31, 1517. Second, if you are a Facebook fan, ELCA Reformaon 500 is a Facebook site that shares a plethora of infor- maon about the Reformaon, Marn Luther, and ways that the event is being celebrated. Third, the Luther House of Study, a satellite seminary that is associated with Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Min- nesota, is offering learning video on their Luther House YouTube channel. Finally, the American Lutheran Church Library has a number of books on Luther and his life which are worth checking out. Also, in the ALC Library is the movie Luther which gives a very good representaon as to what was happening in Luthers Germany prior to the Reformaon movement. Im looking forward to celebrang with you our Lutheran heritage as we make our way to October 31, 2017! In Christ, Pastor Carl

AMERICAN LUTHERAN CHURCH

PARISH LIGHT American Lutheran Church 401 South Flynn Drive, PO Box 287, Milbank, SD 57252 November 2016

A Beacon of god’s love | a home for all people

Before the calendar turned to a new millennium in the year 2000, numerous magazines put together lists of the most important events and people of the last one thousand years. Being a history buff I was interested in the lists and was very surprised to see Martin Luther listed as the third most important person on the Life Magazine’s list of 100 most important people of the last millennium and the Reformation considered to be the second most important event in the past 1000 years. But the truth is, that I shouldn’t have been all that surprised at the im-portance of Martin Luther or the Reformation, because when teaching world history, now a good number of years ago, my class spent a whole month on a unit on the Reformation and its influence on Western history. Often, the Reformation is understood as an event that ended the religious unity of the Catholic Church, but in reality the Reformation was a revolution that created challenges and changes to the Western European geo-graphic landscape and restructured the social, political, economic, and religious ideology of all of Europe. The Reformation was an insurgency of new thought that ended the religious unity of Europe and ushered in 150 years of socio-religious warfare. By the time the conflicts had ended, the political, social, economic, and of course reli-gious structures in the west had fundamentally changed. Next year on Reformation Sunday we, as a Lutheran congregation, will be well into our celebration of the 500th Anniversary of Martin Luther’s nailing of the 95 Thesis to the All Saints Church door in Wittenberg, Germany. Over the next 365 days there will be a multitude of opportunities offered concerning the education of the Refor-mation and Martin Luther, and I would recommend for you a few to consider as learning resources. First, the ELCA has a site that will help supplement your Reformation reading. The website is ELCA500.org.

The site has a timeline that illustrates what was happening in Europe each day until October 31, 1517. Second, if you are a Facebook fan, ELCA Reformation 500 is a Facebook site that shares a plethora of infor-

mation about the Reformation, Martin Luther, and ways that the event is being celebrated. Third, the Luther House of Study, a satellite seminary that is associated with Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Min-

nesota, is offering learning video on their Luther House YouTube channel. Finally, the American Lutheran Church Library has a number of books on Luther and his life which are worth

checking out. Also, in the ALC Library is the movie Luther which gives a very good representation as to what was happening in Luther’s Germany prior to the Reformation movement.

I’m looking forward to celebrating with you our Lutheran heritage as we make our way to October 31, 2017! In Christ, Pastor Carl

25th Sunday after Pentecost November 6 All Saints Day

In holy baptism God makes saints out of sinners. In holy communion God forgives the sins of all the saints. In the assembly today we give thanks for all the saints “who from their labors rest,” who have fought the good fight, who have gained the crown. In

the same breath we petition our God for the strength to hear and to heed the admonitions of the Lord Jesus in today’s gospel. Recalling that we have been sealed by the Spirit and sustained by the Savior’s body and blood, we keep on keeping on as God gives us breath, to the praise of God’s glory. Job 19:23-27a Psalm 17:1-9 2 Thessalonians 2:1-5, 13-17 Luke 20:27-38 Daniel 7:1-3,15-18 Psalm 149 Ephesians 1:11-23 Luke 6:20-31

27th Sunday after Pentecost November 20

Christ the King Sunday

Jeremiah’s promise of the execution of “justice and righteousness in the land” finds ironic fulfill-ment in the execution of Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews. It appears so utterly contradicto-

ry that the king should be crucified with the criminal. This victo-ry appears for all the world as ignominious defeat. Yet through the gate of death our Lord opens the door to paradise. Jeremiah 23:1-6 Psalm 46 Colossians 1:11-20 Luke 23:33-43

26th Sunday after Pentecost November 13

The end is near. There is no doubt about it. The warnings are dire. The tone of today’s texts is ominous. But the baptized know how to live in the “meantimes.” The baptized are strengthened for the living of these days in word and sacrament. The baptized rally around the invitation of the apostle:

“Brothers and sisters, do not be weary in doing what is right.”

Malachi 4:1-2a Psalm 98 2 Thessalonians 3:6-13 Luke 21:5-19

1st Sunday of Advent November 27

The new church year begins with a wake-up call: Christ is coming soon! In today’s readings both Paul and Jesus challenge us to wake from sleep, for we know neither the day nor hour of the Lord’s coming. Isaiah proclaims the day when God will gather all people on the holy mountain and there will be no more war or suffering. Though we vigilantly watch for

the promised day of salvation, we wait for what we already have: Christ comes among us this day as the word and meal that strengthens our faith in the promises of God.

Bible Study & Ministry

Come and join our bible studies for a brand new, interactive teaching se-ries called Animate Faith.

Each week we will watch an engaging and thought provoking presentation by some of the most innovative Christian thinkers in the country.

After viewing their presentation, we will take time to work through the questions they ask:

Is God real?

Can we be spiritual without being religious?

What is salvation?

Why read the Bible?

What was Jesus up to?

What really happened on the cross?

What does it mean to be the Church?

Confirmation Class Wednesdays 3:30-4:30 Grades 5-8

The confirmation class continues to concentrate on Jesus’ early life, including his earliest ministry, healings, and call of his disciples.

Along with the Jesus study, we take time each week to prepare ourselves for the 500th Anniversary of Luther’s nailing the 95 Thesis to the church door in Wittenberg. This is such a special event in our church history, I believe that it is vitally important to allow our confirmands to take part in the celebration.

If you have any questions about confirmation, please call the office at (605) 432-5566.

There is a ministry program in our congregation to secretly pray for our students who are confirmed until they graduate from high school. This is open to both men and women who would like to uphold the youth in prayer. If you would like to be part of this program, please leave your name at the church office. As students are confirmed, we will pair you with one as names allow. You are simply asked to pray faithfully for your student and occasionally remember them with greeting cards such as on birthdays or Christian holidays but gifts are discouraged. Please prayerfully consider being a part of this program.

Taken from Jordan’s October Newsletter: “We have just finished our third week on campus. Al-ready, God is doing some amazing things here in the Middle East. My team and I have met many students who are open to talking about spirituality and Christianity. We have also been able to share the Gospel message with over 20 students! Some of these student have attended church with us.

There are some very interesting people whom I have met. One of these people is my good friend Ali. Ali has spent some time in Wyoming and wears a huge belt buckle and boots because of his time in the States. Due to his wardrobe, Ali has been nicknamed the Sheriff. Because of this nickname, I was scared to talk to Ali, but my fears quickly subsided as we grew in our relationship. Ali was very inter-ested in what I believe about God. So, I got to share with him the first chapter of John, which talks about Jesus’s deity. The next time I met up with Ali, he told me that he might believe that Jesus is God. I have been encouraged to see Ali’s desire to know more about the truth of Christianity! “

Whew! The month of October slipped right on by and we are busy preparing for the holiday season

coming up with Thanksgiving and Christmas. Our days have been kept quite busy with many fall activities, including going outside to enjoy the beautiful weather (leaf hunt, on a walk, playing on the playground to name just a few things). We were lucky enough to squeeze in a visit to the Pumpkin Patch, even though the temperatures were a bit on the cool side. The kids thoroughly enjoyed the fun activities and taking home a donated pumpkin to paint. Thanks to Mark & Emily Mueller for their hospitality and generosity. We celebrated Fire Safety Week with members of our local fire department stopping by our classroom to visit and provide tips about fire safety. They provided us with ways to keep us safe and the opportunity to check out a fire truck first hand (climbing & sitting in it too). We practiced our fire drill at school to ensure we knew what to do in case of a fire. Shawna, a member of the Grant County Public Library, came in to our class to read a story and do a craft with our students during “Read for the Record”. We had a “spooktacular” end to our month with learning, games, treats, activities, and of course, a good ol’ Halloween Party. Have a blessed November! -American Lutheran Preschool
