TWELFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JUNE 21, 2020

Masses at Saint Paul of the Cross Catholic Church are still suspended. We are working towards a safe and healthy reopening.

The Archdiocese of Atlanta has announced that the dispensation from the obligation to attend Mass remains in effect through June 28, 2020.

INFORMATION: DURING CORONA-19 PERIOD

The Archdiocese of Atlanta has announced that the dispensation from the obligation to attend Mass remains in effect through June 28, 2020. If you live with someone, or care for someone in a high risk category, we strongly encourage you to attend live streamed Mass.

What to expect when our parish is safely ready to reopen: Based on the guidelines from the Archdiocese, the CDC and the local authorities, below there is a list of requirements you would need to comply with in order to attend Mass onsite (Reopening date has not been determined yet, however, it is important to be aware of the new safety guidelines).

Guidelines to comply PRIOR to attending Mass on site:

The number of attendees will be limited. We will be using an online system, such as, Evite, Sign Up Genius or Eventbrite to sign up to attend Mass.

All parishioners are asked to take their temperature prior to coming to Mass. If anyone in your family has a tempera-ture of 99.6 degrees or greater, or exhibits any symptoms of illness, everyone in the family needs to stay home.

The doors will be open approximately 15 minutes prior to the start of Mass. All parishioners must bring their own face mask and must wear it throughout the Mass. It is strongly recommended not to bring children under 12 years old to attend Mass onsite. Your temperature will be taken, if your temperature is 99.6 or more you and your household would be asked to return home.

Before you are directed to your seat, you will need to sanitized your hands at the sanitizing stations. To ensure safe distancing, seating will be configured differently and ushers will direct you to your seat. The restrooms will be closed. Restrooms will be available for emergency use only. Guidelines to comply DURING Mass on site:

Baptismal fonts and holy water containers will remain empty. “Cry Rooms” will be closed. All hymnals and missalettes (and other items) have been removed from the pews. The Readings and the Creed will be projected on the screen behind the altar.

Congregational/Choir singing will be discouraged. There be no physical contact during the Sign of Peace nor the Lord’s Prayer. Holy Communion will be given only on the hand, not tongue. We will not be passing around the offering basket. You can either contribute your offering online or leave it in the basket located at the entrance of the Church.

Guidelines to comply AFTER attending Mass:

Dismissal will be row by row to keep members spaced appropriately. Please follow usher’s directions. Chapel will be closed. Do not leave any paper, mask or gloves in the pews; there will be waste baskets outside by the exit. As much as we would like to talk with our friends, whom we have not seen for a while, we need to encourage you to wave from afar and leave church property as soon as possible.

Please keep informed through the Bulletin, Announcements, Calling Posts, Website and social media platforms such as Facebook and/or Twitter. If you would like to receive notifications via e-mail, please contact Patricia at: [email protected] or call 404-696-6704. Your cooperation will be the most important factor in this transition to a healthy and safe come back to our Parish.

Message from our Pastor

My dear Parishioners, I am writing this on the evening of Juneteenth, a day I didn’t even know existed before I came to Georgia eleven years ago. Like so many other dark and shameful events and situations that have been buried over the past several centuries and never made it into our American history books, Juneteenth has in this year of 2020 suddenly leapt out of that dark-ness and into the light of day, to the delight of our Black citizens and the dismay of far too any others. For it comes at just the right time for all of us; for Black people to celebrate even in the midst of multiple tragedies that fly in the face of “Emancipation”, and for the rest of us, especially the beneficiaries of the dominant culture, another wake-up call to get it right this time. Today, we are living, all of us, in the midst of an unbelievable whirlwind, a vast never-ending tornado that has swept us off our feet and snatched away all out creature comforts, threatened the lives of even the healthiest, and destabilized many families, communities, and even the nation—not to mention the world. How can we even regain what has been lost? Better still, do we even want to bother? Our better angels are whispering to us, I believe, to begin anew, not to go back, an impossibility, but to move ahead fortified in the knowledge that truth can never remain hidden, that, sooner or later, it will prevail, and that we must remain steadfast by its side. We cannot remain wedded to the truth unless we are people of faith, a faith which enables us to look beyond our puny selves with our limited resources to the God who fash-ioned us without our aid and who has promised over and over again to remain with us through thick and thin, a God who sealed that covenant promise by sending his Son to show us the way of faithfulness and his Spirit to enable us to over-come our human limitations. We must be realistic as we set out to rebuild our lives together and, together, rebuild our nation and our world. For too long we have tried to patch an old garment, or as Scripture puts it, “People do not put new wine into old wine-skins.” (Matt. 9:17) Band-Aids will not do when major surgery is required. The crises we face today, whether due to the Coronavirus or the more lethal virus of racism, can only be resolved with the help of God. God uses the gifts of scien-tists and health professionals to heal our bodies and minds, as he is doing in the case of coronavirus; He needs our coop-eration as individuals and as a human community to heal the deeper and more deadly illnesses that threaten the life of the soul. We must be willing to submit to a higher power (God) for the disinfecting of our souls and the soul of our society. Racism has rightly been called America’s Original Sin and indeed it is. For over four hundred years it has warped judgements and crippled countless lives in every aspect of American society, in government, in business, in education, in social life, in religion. In all these areas the lie of inequality—racism—has dominated the scene. Today, with the con-vergence of a variety of movements and protests throughout the land, it may be facing its final days. We must not be naïve; we face a hardened and determined enemy and the battle will not be easy. But it has already begun. It must be fought on many fronts: within homes, in neighborhoods, workplaces, on the playing field. The prime encounter must be with self. Avoid that, and nothing else will succeed. That is why we need the grace of God working within us and among us as a nation for we need personal as well as national conversion. Off with the old, on with the new. The cur-rent administration in D.C. is not the initiator of the evil we encounter, simply an enabler, but a powerful one that, be-cause of its strategic positioning, has laid bare all the camouflage and revealed the disgusting ugliness of the evil. God works in mysterious but wondrous ways! Let us be hopeful and prayerful, and determined to offer our best effort to the cause of truth, justice and peace. “If God is for us, who can be against us?” (Rom. 8:31) —Fr. Jerome, C.P.

¡Danos fuerza y conviccio n, Sen or!

P. Luis, C.P.
