Dear Friends of St. Louise,

Happy Mothers’ Day! A couple of years ago I wrote in this column for this day about how I thought that I was the best-behaved and most responsible child of my parents’ six offspring. My eyes were opened one day when I visited my maternal grandmother, who pulled out a box of letters my mother had sent her over the years. My grandmother showed me letter after letter that said, “I don’t know what I am going to do with Gary, I can’t seem to get him to listen to me at all . . . He seems be instigator of the fights the kids have with each other. . . “ etc., etc. I wrote that column as a way of thanking my mother for her patience and love, and to encourage other mothers not to give up!

Today, I would like to reflect with you on how important my mother is to me, even though I am now old enough to be a grandparent myself. My mother, even now, is someone who will always listen to me. I know absolutely that I can say things to her that she will hold in strict-est confidence. She occasionally – and only when I truly need it – will offer me counsel. She is always glad to see me, but never places unrealistic expectations upon me. She is a personal, living, human reflection of God’s love for me!

In a certain sense, St. Louise Parish helps to guide me as does my mother. You give me loving support always, gentle correction when needed. The Church is sometimes called “Mother Church,” for this and many other reasons. She gives birth to us spiritually through the font of Baptism, and nurtures us as a mother does her children. I mention this because our St. Louise parish leadership will meet next Wednesday, May 15, for the annual Parish Leadership Day. The Councils and Commissions, together with representatives of vari-ous committees, will review the information that over 1,000 of you gave us through the parish “Going Deeper” survey in February. We will use that information to set priorities for the coming pastoral year and the years following. So be watching for more information about those priorities in the near future.

Thank you to all of you for the love you show each day, and congrat-ulations to all our mothers on this Mothers’ Day!

With my prayers,

Fr. Gary Zender

Our gratitude goes out to Michael Barbarossa, who completed his three-month pastoral assignment with us last week. If you wish to write him this summer, he will be at St. Michael Parish in Olympia through mid-August. The address is PO Box 766, Olympia WA 98501. We will soon welcome another seminarian, Sylvester Chanda, who will be with us for several weeks this summer.

As you know, Fr. Fabian will enter into retirement and end his ministry here at St. Louise on June 30. Last week we announced that Arch-bishop Sartain has assigned Deacon Carlos Orozco to replace Fr. Fabian as Parochial Vicar here at St. Louise. Deacon Carlos will be ordained to the priesthood on June 22 and will begin his priestly ministry here on July 1.

Activities and Events

May is Mental Health Awareness Month (Focus: Impact on the Family) Many families are ill-equipped to respond to the multiple challeng-es of a family member’s diagno-sis of mental illness. Behaviors can be misinterpreted, and find-

ing effective resources and medical interventions may prove overwhelming. The strain on the family can be significant. The stigma that often accompanies this illness may cause families to be hesitant to share their need for support during this difficult time. How can our parish, or we as parishioners, be supportive to families with this need? If you, or anyone you know is strug-gling, please reach out for a free consultation. Cathy Callans, MA, LMHC, Pastoral Counselor, [email protected], 425-614-6225

New Bethlehem Day Center Needs Meals

Please consider providing a meal for the families who come to the New Bethlehem Day Center. There is a particular need on weekends, especially on Sundays when we are now open all day. You need not go through an approval process to bring a meal. Simply gather a handful of friends or family and divide up

the menu to feed about 30 people. You can then either drop off the food, or stay and help serve it to the families. Please sign up using this link: http://www.nbpshelter.org/donate-a-meal

Thank you to all the St. Louise parishioners who participated in the Walking and Witnessing for immigrant Families on May 4-5, 2019. The participants

walked from St. Louise Parish to the Peace and Spirituality Center in Bellevue.

St. Louise Charger Cards

Charger Cards is a scrip fundraiser that our parish and school participate in year-round. St. Louise buys gift cards at a discount from a supplier and offers them for sale at face value. The differ-ence in cost is what St. Louise keeps as a profit for our parish school. The aver-age profit is $5 for every $100 of gift card. This is a unique fundraiser because

you buy gift cards for stores that you already use. It is a rare fundraiser that doesn’t ask you to buy anything you don't al-ready buy.

The idea is that families buy groceries and gas (or spend at restaurants or other stores) that are in their normal budget. Instead of paying with a check or cash at the store, you pay with a gift card that you purchased from St. Louise. This way St. Louise School earns a small percentage of every normal purchase you make. Charger Cards are available outside the church today. There are hundreds of stores to select from. It's guaranteed that there is at least one store you are planning to shop at this week whose gift card you could first buy from St. Louise. Charger Cards are typically available between Masses on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month. Thank you for your support of St. Louise School through your pur-chase of Charger Cards.

Novena to Our Lady of Perpetual Help Everyone is invited to join in celebrating a novena to the Virgin Mary under her title, "Our Lady of Perpetual Help," for nine Saturdays (began May 4)."Our Lady of Perpet-ual Help" is the name given to Mary as depicted in a fa-mous, centuries-old icon in the Byzantine style. The icon and the devotion to Mary it inspires is in the special charge of the Redemptorist order of priests. You can see a picture of the icon and read about its history, miracles and symbolism at their website at http://www.iconoflove.org/. Although anyone can make a private novena at any time, the Church teaches that there is added efficacy in the union of the faithful at prayer. Holding this public novena to Our Lady of Perpetual Help is a St. Louise tradition, sponsored by the Fil-Am community. Please come! The dates for the Novena to Our Lady of Perpetual Help:
