Parish Financial Report Second Sunday of Lent 8th March 2020 Order of Mass: page 7 onwards; Mass readings: p.155-156; Latin Text for 11am Mass pages 77-78 As you leave the church today you will be given a copy of our financial report for 2019. We hope you will take it home and read it, especially as once again we have tried to make it much more than a boring list of figures. The bottom line is that once again we ended the year just about in the black on our ordinary income and expenses. This was due to two main factors: a continuing effort to cut costs, and seeking to maximise opportunities for Gift Aid. In fact, without the sizeable increase in our Gift Aid income we would almost certainly have been in the red at the end of the year. I would like to express my thanks and that of the Finance Committee and, indeed the whole parish, to the Gift Aid Team who work so hard in this area of parish finances. If you do not currently use Gift Aid we really recommend it to you as an effective way of helping our parish finances. Gift Aid works if you pay UK Income or Capital Gains taxes. If you pay tax at the standard rate you and donate £1000 to the parish, you will already have paid £250 tax on that amount. Gift Aid enables us to claim that £250 back from the Inland Revenue and so your Gift becomes worth £1,250.00. If you pay tax at the higher rate of 40% it gets slightly more c o m p l i c a t e d b u t beneficial to you because you can also claim back 20% of the full amount received by the parish, in other words you claim £250 (£1,250x20%=£250). That means, your gift of £1,000 actually only costs you £750 but is worth £1,250 to us (you can see why we have a Gift Aid Team to advise on all this stuff!). More information is available on the Government website - just google Gift Aid (other search engines exist!). The other factor enabling us to end the year in the black was another round of cost cutting. In particular our fuel costs were down. This was partly due to the new contracts for gas and electricity and partly because we had a mild winter. Without those two factors our costs would have been very much higher. It is good to have ended in the black once again, however, we remain very close to the line. Two weeks ago we submitted three antique chalices for restoration and shouldn’t have been surprised that they will cost over £1,000 each. The recent storms have damaged the flat roof of my office and I type this with a bucket next to me. With no slack in the budget the choice is to repair one or the other.

Parish Life & News

Miserere Mei St Elizabeth's invites you to a concert of music for Lent, featuring choral classics like Allegri's Miserere and Lotti's Crucifixus, alongside JS Bach's sublime but virtuosic motet Jesu Meine Freude (Jesus, my joy). Featuring some of the top young singers in the capital, you will be moved, but also provoked to deeper reflection on the season. Al legri ’s sett ing of Psalm 51, Miserere Mei, is a work of art so

hauntingly beautiful, the music such a mysteriously perfect match to the sentiments of the psalm, that it was for many years allowed to be performed only in the Sistine Chapel on Spy Wednesday and Good Friday, and it was forbidden to transcribe the music. Free entry with a retiring collection to help us develop the work of our music ministry.

Sunday 15th March, 3pm. Please invite your friends to join us as well.

Parish Life & NewsCOVID-19

The bishops of England and Wales have prepared a three-step response if the current outbreak gets worse. The present advice is that we all exercise basic hand-hygiene. If the number of cases increases we may be asked to suspend the Sign of Peace at Mass.

Archbishop Peter Smith Our former Archbishop has been diagnosed with cancer and is in hospital. Please remember him in your prayers.

Fr Stephen Away This weekend Fr Stephen is in Belfast where he is scheduled to give a day of recollection to the priests of Down and Connor Diocese and also a retreat to the prospective seminarians of that diocese. Please keep his work in your prayers. He will be back late on Sunday evening.

School Reference Forms School reference forms are a record of Mass attendance for the purpose of getting a reference for a place at a Catholic school. Trying to cheat the system by pre-dating forms without going to Mass is unfair on our regular parishioners. It is also foolish as the perpetrators identify themselves! Please note that we will not give a reference to people who cheat in this way.

Loretto Praise & Worship Night After the 5.30pm Mass we have a weekly

Praise & Worship Night in the crypt. From 6.30pm, there will be a time of praise and worship, a period of Eucharistic Adoration, and a talk by Pippa Baker on “Living Aware of the Light: Practising the Presence of God”.
