Dearly beloved in Christ,

A thorough reading of the scripture reveal to us a God who

constantly and intimately loving humanity and a callous and

corrupted humanity constantly and cruelly rejecting the love

and authority of God. The bible also informs the reader that

these parallel paths of redemption and rebellion progress into the summit point of God’s

judgment. We are told from small age that God will punish us for the wrong and evil

deeds. It is not a list of evil deeds that is in question but the quality of relationship

between God and us. When we find our existence away from God we are tended to do

everything (even the so called good thing) in the wrong way that ultimately causes for the

divine condemnation. In the gospel of John we read, “And this is the verdict: The Light

has come into the world, but men loved darkness more than light, because their deeds

were evil” (3:19). More than God punishing the evil doers, humans chooses

condemnation out of their corrupted and rebellious thinking instead of the blessedness

with God. Human history – social, cultural, political, industrial, commercial, legal – is a

history of constant rebellion; the history of the construction of Babel.

Jesus Christ and His cross is probably God’s final invitation and at the same time

warning to put an end to our reckless journey and to come back to the enriching and life-

giving relationship with God. The period of Lent can be observed with all its ritualistic

details to satisfy our own corrupted self or we can enter into it as a means to regain our

dried up flow towards God, to mend our broken relationships; to rediscover the plan of

our life in the light of God’s will. If we believe that there is God who loves and redeems,

we also need to believe that He is the righteous judge. May the lent observation open

before us opportunity to study His word and bear fruits that please God through the

transformation of our mind. Let us not be guided by our own knowledge and end up in

destruction but by the wisdom of God and by His spirit that will result in the abundance

of life for all.

In God’s abounding grace, we could dedicate our new parsonage on the 20th of January

2018 as we wished and prayed. Rt. Rev. Dr. Isaac Mar Philoxenos, the Diocesan

Episcopa led the dedication service in the presence of clergy representatives from sister

churches and a number of people from our parish and neighboring parishes. Just as the

people of Israel experienced the presence of God in the pillar of cloud and fire, God’s

presence, help and protection was very vivid in our journey which culminated in a sunny

day with fifty degree temperature in the middle of the freezing winter. In God’s great

providence, we got a construction firm with high credentials and utmost dedication. We

owe much to Mr. Alex Johnson for building a high quality house below budget and

before schedule. I have great appreciation for our leaders who spearheaded this project

with great vigilance, agility and commitment. The members of building committee and

the executive committee spent a number of man hours at various levels of decision

making. I thank God for you the people who sincerely love God and His church who

stood behind the leadership with your sincere prayers and resources. I trust that you will

continue the support even for the furnishing so that we will be able to use the new

parsonage at the earliest.

It makes us proud and euphoric that our Valia Metropolitan has been awarded with

Padma Bhushan, the third highest civilian award in the Republic of India, the country of

more than 1,342,512,706 people. In a land of religious animosity and cultural

domination, Thirumeni’s life is a living invitation to all segments of life to be open to

people of other faiths and ideology and join together beyond identities to make this world

more humane and just. Let us thank God for our small but great church and its excellent

leaders.

Yours in Christ’s ministry

Rev. Abraham Scaria

Greetings to you all in the mighty name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus

Christ. Praising God Almighty for His manifold blessings in our lives.

We came into this world with certain abilities, and when God saved us,

He gave us gifts and the grace to exercise those gifts to help others, to

build our own lives and to glorify His name. But I should say one of

the greatest tragedies in life is wasted opportunity – not making the

most of what God has given us.

God blesses us to make us a blessing. He planted the people of Israel

like a vine in the land they might, by their life and testimony, bear

spiritual fruit, letting the gentile nations know about the true and living God. He gave them an

opportunity to show the other nations what He could do for those who would trust and obey

Him. Instead, the vine became like all the other vines. The Israelites compromised and sinned.

So God had to cut down His vine and discipline His people.

Remember, God has planted you where you are that you might be a blessing. He wants you to

take deep root. He wants you to bear rich fruit. And if you will draw upon His spiritual power,

He will enable you to be a blessing. Bloom where you are planted and bear fruit to the glory

of God and the enrichment of others.

God has been so gracious to us to complete our project and enabled us for the dedication of our

Parsonage. I appreciate the hard work and dedication by the committee members and office

bearers of 2017. Best wishes and prayers for the newly elected committee members and office

bearers of 2018. I appreciate the initiative taken by the Youth Fellowship to organize a (brunch

fellowship) meeting with college going students and it was a wonderful experience to meet

with them. May God help you all to use your God-given talents to glorify God and be a

blessing to others.

In the Lord’s ministry

ASSISTANT VICAR’S MESSAGE

Parish Messenger February - March Page 5

Our parish is blessed with many parishioners who are

willing to give their time and talents to foster

community. Whether it be liturgical, fiscal, educational, or

social, I have been overwhelmed with the response of the

parishioners to do “whatever is needed” to return our parish

to the vital spiritual and social community it can and should

be. In 2016, when I was appointed as the parish secretary, I

was apprehended and prayed “I am just your servant, Lord, let us journey together.” Our

Lord has done great things for us. I keep saying this – but it is worth repeating until

everyone believes and is tired of hearing me say it. When I look back, I have grown to

love this parish and the people who I have had the privilege to encounter. Every

challenge is an opportunity to change and grow. Our God is a God of surprises who

encourages us and challenges us to reach beyond.

In 2017, as a parish, we were able to organize and complete various projects. These

included significant events like the celebration of Chrysostom Valiya Metropolitan’s

100th birthday, ordination of Jess Achen, launching of updated parish website, publication

of the new Photo Directory, Installation of glass balcony etc. But the most important

accomplishment was the completion of a new Parsonage as well as addition of a 65 more

parking spaces.

But beyond all these “so called” accomplishments, parish has a different objective to

spread the Love of Jesus to others. When we encounter the Lord’s mercy, grace, and

forgiveness his love for us has become abundantly clear. We are all created in love. We

are all created for love. That love knows no boundaries and doesn’t have any conditions.

It should be given to others because it is given to us by our God. Our goal is always to

bring people together and to help them realize that each creature has the spirit of God in

them. Let me take a moment to thank Rev Abraham Scaria, Rev Sonu S Varughese, and

Rev George Varghese, managing committee of 2016 & 2017 and all other subcommittee

members for the support and timely advices, and a huge thank you to all parishioners for

your prayers.

So let us all look for what He has been doing and work together to continue to make a

difference in every day.

Serve the Lord with gladness!

Sincerely

Shijy Alex

Light to Life

The diocese has initiated a Child Care project with the name “Light to Life” to help the

under privileged children in India and Native American mission fields. 'Light to Life' is

a new Mission initiative of the Diocese. It is a project aimed at the development of the

community by supporting the educational needs of the Children in India and Native

American mission fields. A child can be supported with $ 20 per month. The goal of

the Diocese is to have at least half the number of families in our parishes gets involved in

this mission.

We request all those who could afford to sponsor one or more child to contact he

following individuals. You have the option to sponsor a child for several months or pay a

one-time lump sum payment. The check may be made payable to ‘the Chicago Mar

Thoma Church’ (indicate “Light to Life” in the memo). A mere $20 would pay for the

educational needs of one child for a month. For more information, please contact the Vicar, Mr. N.M. Philip or Mrs. Sunina Moncy Chacko.
