Our StoryIn 1936, while the small town of Gilbert, Arizona, was written up as the “Alfalfa Hay Capital of the World,” Father Vincent Mastres celebrated the first Mass on November 22, in the small adobe mission church, located on 20 West Bruce Avenue, which he and a group of volunteers built with a $3,000 00 donation from the Catholic Church Extension of Chicago The building could hold seventy people, and served as a mission of St Mary Parish in Chandler Sunday Masses were celebrated by the administrator Father Joseph Patterson

On October 22, 1943, the mission became St Anne Parish with its own pastor: Father Godfrey Fontaine Dominican Sisters from Michigan arrived in 1948 and established a school for kindergarten through 4 th Grade, which later closed in 1958 After being served by a series of faithful pastors for thirty-five years, the old adobe church was torn down to be replaced by a 220-person capacity church which cost $80,000.00, financed through the Charity and Development Appeal Fund It was dedicated on August 1, 1971, by Bishop Edward McCarthy; the pastor was Father Vincent Nevulis

In 1985, Father Raul Morales organized a building fund campaign to build a church at the new site on Elliot Road. The first Mass in the new church took place on February 25, 1989 and the temple was dedicated on April 30, 1989 by Bishop Thomas O’Brien At present, this space is now known as the Parish Hall

Three years beforehand, in 1986, 74-year-old Father Stephen Adrian came as Associate Pastor Father Adrian would remain a faithful servant and refused to retire until his peaceful passing in 2013, when he was 101 years old A former Episcopalian priest who had converted to Catholicism and eventually ordained a Catholic priest in 1984, Father Douglas Lorig was installed as the new pastor in June, 1989 Father Lorig soon started perpetual adoration of the Blessed Sacrament in 1993, by converting his own office space into an Adoration Chapel With the surging population growth in Gilbert and surrounding areas, a new church was desperately needed Under Father Lorig’s leadership, our present church was built and the dedication Mass was celebrated by Bishop Thomas O’Brien on April 21, 1998

The parish grew to over 4,500 registered families, becoming one of the largest parishes in the country! Almost all of the ministries we have at the church today started during this time and continue to flourish. In 1999 we welcomed sisters from Mexico – the Carmelite Missionaries of St Therese of the Child Jesus (Misioneras Carmelitas de St Teresa del Niño Jesus) who joyfully helped out in our growing Hispanic ministries We then raised funds to construct a monastery for them in Mexico which was completed in 2002 We continue to be blessed by the presence of the Carmelite sisters, helping out not only here, but in other parishes as well

The Diocese of Phoenix would also experience a change in December of 2003 - Bishop Thomas J Olmsted was installed as our new Bishop Father Lorig was succeeded by Father Gregory Schlarb in 2006 In 2012, our current pastor Father Sergio Fita, and his associate Father Juan Cano, arrived from Spain They belong to Servi Trinitatis (Servants of the Trinity), a secular institute of the Church, which was founded in Spain. This is the first parish in the United States where this order has sent priests to serve God’s people In July of 2014, parishioners bid farewell to Father Juan Cano who left to start his new assignment in Spain For the last two years up to the present, we’ve been blessed with the help of several visiting priests, among them – Father Charles Casale, Msgr Michael Nestor, and Father Dennis Riccitelli Currently, we’re enjoying the assistance of Parochial Vicar, Father Job Kundoni from Diocese of Verapoly, India and Father Joal Bernales, a Diocese of Phoenix priest originally from the Philippines

In October of 2014, we celebrated our 70th year of being a parish! Today, we continue to pray for the Lord’s guidance and providence, and Our Lady’s motherly care, as we continue our mission of the New Evanglization St Anne, St Therese, and all the angels and saints Pray for Us!

Catechesis and Faith Formation:Children - Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS)NOTE: Registered parishioners can sign up for CGS sessions on line “At that time the disciples approached Jesus and said, ‘Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?’ He called a child over, placed it in their midst, and said, “Amen, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. And whoever receives one child such as this in my name receives me.” (Mt 18:1-5)

What is Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS)?The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) is an approach to the religious formation of children 3-12 years of age The catechesis is based on the conviction that God and the child are already in relationship The atrium is the environment where adults help a child to live fully the encounter with God, and where formation takes place It’s one of the elements that help the relationship between God and the child to flourish, making the atrium a place of preparation for involvement in the larger worshiping community

Meeting Times• Tuesdays: 4 p m and 6 p m • Wednesdays: 4 p m and 6 p m • Sundays: 10:30 a m and 3 p m

The children attend one 90-minute session a week. The last ten to fifteen minutes of a session are spent in prayer From time to time the children may desire to remain longer in prayer

Plan your visitWe’re happy to have you observe this sacred space, prepared for the child’s work to become prayer, any time you’d like In fact we encourage it! To preserve the natural rhythm of the atrium we ask that you review a copy of the guidelines for observing from the CGS Office. Please let your

ChoirThis ministry provides leadership at all parish liturgical celebrations throughout the year with singers and musicians

Music Ministers are not here to “perform”

Yes, my friends, how can we keep from singing? This is an opportunity to express outwardly the union in spirit by means of the unity of all of our voices Our music ministers are here for the purpose of assisting God’s holy people to give thanks and praise The elements, forms, and styles of music are created and molded depending upon the liturgical context of the celebration Music ministers are not here to “perform,” but to celebrate God’s reign in our world - to make a joyful noise to the Lord and hopefully to inspire you to join them

Psalms of David

Father Eugene Walsh wrote, “The full symbol of the word of God proclaimed in the midst of the parish Sunday assembly is the assembly itself, sharing the living word of God alive in voice and song...” The magnificent Psalms of David exort us all to participate fully: Psalm 71 - “I will sing of your salvation.” Psalm 145 - “I will praise your name, my King and my God.”

We urge everyone to come to the table of the Lord and participate fully through prayer and song!

Greeters & HospitalityA ministry of joy...This ministry can also be understood as a ministry of joy Ushers and greeters invite everyone to enter into the joy of the Lord This means that the ushers and greeters must be in touch with that joy too That’s easier on some days than on others We may have to push ourselves to manifest the joy of Christ; but when we do, we benefit as much as those whom we greet. The conversation between an arriving worshiper and an usher or greeter is often very brief, especially as the time for worship nears and the number of people arriving increases. But brief doesn’t have to mean superficial.

Page 19: Parish Directory 2019 - stanneaz.org · conviction that God and the child are already in relationship The atrium is the environment where adults help a child to live fully the encounter

…and care.

If you see someone whose spouse is ill, you might ask how he or she is doing If you greet someone who is out of work, you might inquire how he or she’s holding up If you welcome someone who has recently lost a loved one, offering a word of sympathy may be very appropriate. If you greet someone whose child is away at school, you might ask if they have heard from the child and how he or she’s doing In other words, what’s most appropriate is the kind of conversation that says, “I care about you and your loved ones ” This kind of conversation makes evident the love of Christ that binds us to one another It’s much more powerful than idle talk about sports, or the weather

Ushers’ duties before people arriveThe work of the Minister of Hospitality begins even before the assembly begins to gather for worship Good hospitality requires attention to the physical space into which people will be welcomed When you know that visitors are coming to your house, you pick up, dust and vacuum so that your guests will enjoy their visit Although ushers usually aren’t responsible for dusting, vacuuming, and putting away things that clutter the gathering space, it’s often needed The roles of the usher and greeter are crucial ministries for the worshiping community Those who serve in these capacities have the potential to add greatly to the experience of worship for all who gather

Like the Good Shepherd, they reveal God’s love in our midst and help us become more aware of that love May the Good Shepherd give them strength and wisdom as they serve the flock in his name.

What do I need in order to be a Minister of Hospitality? There are a few prerequisites for being an usher/greeter

Social OutreachFriends of the NeedyHumble Beginnings

Many parishes within the Diocese of Phoenix assist the needy, but St Anne has a ministry called Friends of the Needy which is unique and came into being in a unique way In the mid-1980’s, when the current site of our church was still a pecan grove, the pastor, Father Charles O’Hern was working to increase the parish building fund One fund raising event “The Valentine’s Day Dance” was an old tradition at St Anne Young women from the parish would raise money for the building fund, and the woman who raised the most money was crowned as Valentine’s Day Queen at the dance

In 1986, Miss Teri Hernandez raised $3,000 by holding yard sales, soliciting money from local businesses in the community, and organizing raffles. As Teri and her family held these yard sales near the old church site on Bruce Street, they grew increasingly familiar with the people in the downtown Gilbert area, many of whom were poor The fundraising soon extended to buying diapers for the needy, as coordinated by Sister Beatrice McQuade and Barbara Hennessey It became very apparent these people needed much more than diapers, so Teri’s group continued having yard sales so they could buy food, diapers and help with utility bills for the less fortunate

“That’s how Friends of the Needy Ministry started and we expanded from there,” says Merci Hernandez, Teri’s mother and current Director of Friends of the Needy “We just kept asking people within the parish to donate food and we started a little pantry in the old rectory on Bruce Street While other parishes have their own St Vincent de Paul ministry, we developed our

Friends of the Needy ministry separately based on our available space and ability to help the community.” The ministry was officially established in 1988, under the guidance of Father Raul Morales, the pastor of St Anne from 1985 until 1992 Father Doug Lorig arrived as the new pastor in June 1992 and he gave the ministry his full support, allowing Friends of the Needy to collect money after Masses. That was when the need to hold raffles and yard sales slowed down and the ministry was able to concentrate on helping the needy using parishioner funds St Anne Friends of the Needy is funded primarily by St Anne parishioners

Services Provided

Since its modest beginnings, the Friends of the Needy ministry has grown into a vehicle that allows parishioners to help those less fortunate in our community who have difficulty making ends meet. Our staff assesses the needs of a family on a case by case basis, and helps them based upon the results of this assessment

The services we provide include:

• Food Volunteers put together food boxes for families or individuals The size and contents of each box is determined by the client’s needs as assessed by the Friends of the Needy volunteers

• New or gently used clothing Friends of the Needy has a thrift store stocked with new and gently used clothing Clients can shop our store while waiting for their food boxes Items are reasonably priced and clients pay what they can afford. If a client’s unemployed, or cannot afford to pay we provide them with the essentials they need.

• Children’s toys We have a small collection of donated toys available in our store

• Household items and small appliances People donate small household appliances and items to us, and clients pay a minimal amount based upon what they can afford for an item. If a client cannot afford to pay we will give them the appliances they need

• Large household appliances and furniture We facilitate the exchange of larger household appliances and furniture donated to Friends of the Needy by connecting clients with donating parishioners There’s no charge for this service or any item donated to us in this category

• Referrals Friends of the Needy provides referrals to many other agencies in the community such as the Gilbert CommunityAction Program (CAP) or the Salvation Army

• Assistance Friends of the Needy provides clients with assistance in applying for governmental assistance programs such as food stamps or unemployment benefits. We’ve also helped several clients with applications when applying for low-income medical payment programs with the local hospitals

• Utility bill assistance Friends of the Needy helps clients pay for basic needs like water, gas and electricity

• Rental assistance (suspended at this time) Previously, we provided rental assistance to our clients We feel this is something we would like to continue to do, but at this time we don’t have the funding to extend this help If you’d like to provide some of this funding, please contact Merci Hernandez at (480) 507–4466, or send a message via Flocknote

We assist people within our parish geographic boundaries as dictated by the Diocese of Phoenix If someone from outside our area comes to us for assistance with food, we provide it for them one time and refer them to the proper parish for assistance The exception to this rule is our Saturday food box service that is open every Saturday to anyone from surrounding communities

Respect LifeWhat does it mean to be Pro-life?

We Catholics are thoroughly and unabashedly pro-life We are pro-life because we believe life is sacred We are pro-life because the Church teaches us that we humans are created in the image and likeness of God For these reasons:

• We are pro-preborn babies, pro-newborn babies, pro-woman, pro-

child, pro-man, pro-elderly, pro-vulnerable, pro-human, and pro-creation!

• We reject the shallow mantra of “pro-choice” which masks any thoughtful consideration of sexual intercourse, pregnancy, childbirth, or abortion

• We reject the unfinished thought of a woman’s right to choose. . .

• We reject the fashionable claim of “reproductive rights” which has resulted in untold millions of abortions

• We reject contraception in all its forms, but especially those forms that silently abort such as: the pill, the patch, injections and the morning after pill

• We reject violence and unnatural death in all its forms—abortion, terrorism, unjust war, capital punishment, and euthanasia

• We embrace the fact that we humans procreate, not reproduce: Animals reproduce Machines copy Humans procreate

• We know that “life” and the future of the human community are sexually transmitted—by the wondrous design of our maker

• We are in awe of the power God has invested in us: that we, imaging God’s creativity, have the power to create new humans in God’s image

• We believe that at the moment of human conception, through the power of the Holy Spirit, a new and unique soul is created by God

• We embrace the fact that humans need to live in community, responsive to each other, caring for the young, the sick and the old, sharing their burdens and joys

Based on work done by Carol Hogan Director for Pastoral Projects and Communications California Catholic Conference

Prison Ministry (Prisión y Cárcel)We pray that by sowing the seed of the Gospel to the incarcerated, it may land on fertile soil and assist them in finding salvation and lead to an experience of true conversion This conversion and acceptance of salvation would thus free them of sin; alleviate their sorrow, and diminish the inner emptiness and loneliness in which they all experience God’s word is unpredictable in its power (Pope Francis, Evangelii Gaudium, 22)

Movements

Catholics in Action

Catholics in Action is an apostolate group which depends on the secular institute Servi Trinitatis and which configures itself as Catholic Action. Or in other words: Catholics in Action is a Catholic Action group which the Church has entrusted through its hierarchy to the secular institute Servi Trinitatis. With lay apostolate and fidelity to the pope being two of Servi Trinitatis’ ends, it’s understandable that it would assume, in a particular way, the call of the Church to promote this lay apostolate, which is the Catholic Action, wherever it develops its own In this manner, Servi Trinitatis contributes to laity finding their way towards sainthood in their faithfulness to the Gospel, in the development of its activity throughout the world, and with the purpose of working to win souls for Christ At this time, the secular institute of Servi Trinitatis is developing its apostolate at the parish of St Anne, in Gilbert, Arizona To learn more about Catholics in Action, visit their website at catholicsinaction org, e-mail at [email protected], or find their group on Flocknote.
