Merry Christmas

“Wait” Training

The Season of Advent is filled with a spirit of waiting – waiting for the Lord to come. Through the readings of the Mass during Advent, we place ourselves in the shoes of the People of Israel, who waited expectantly for the coming of the Messiah, and we share the joy and wonder of the heavenly host when He finally arrives at Christmas (Lk 2:14). Advent also reminds us that we too – here and now – are waiting. Even while we celebrate the Lord’s first coming 2000 years ago, we are waiting for his return, and our task is to wait in faith and in hope. If we think about our common experience, we might discern several types of waiting: First, there is waiting in dread. Imagine a child sent to the principal’s office for misbehaving – he sits outside waiting in dread for the door to open. This is not (hopefully) our attitude when thinking of the Lord’s return. Next, there is waiting in boredom. Standing in line at Publix waiting to check out – an example of waiting in boredom, in which we do nothing and feel unproductive. Neither is this the proper attitude when waiting for the Lord.

Then there is waiting in frustration. Being stuck in traffic, waiting for a power outage to be restored or perhaps enduring a long homily are all examples of that. The Israelites during the Exodus waited impatiently for God to appear on Mt. Sinai until, in their frustration, they fashioned their own god from a golden calf. (Ex 32) Again, not the way to wait for the Lord. Finally, there is waiting in hope. A child at an amusement park is waiting in line at his favorite ride, and perhaps the wait is long, but he knows his turn is coming soon. So, he is patient and waits with anticipation and hope. He speaks excitedly about what he will experience, and all his energy and focus is on getting there. Now we’re approaching the proper spiritual attitude of waiting for the Lord. It can be a challenge to wait for the Lord in this way when we don’t feel his presence, aren’t sure He is at work in our lives or don’t understand what He is doing in us and in the world. That’s why we celebrate Advent. This season reminds us that God is intimately involved in His Creation. The Babe in the manger is the proof that God has not forgotten or abandoned us. The rejoicing choirs of an-gels call to our mind what God has done for us. The coming of Christ into the world urges us on to continue waiting in hope – he came the first time; he will come again at the end of time with the reward of eternal life for his faithful ones; and he continues to come into our lives daily through his grace and blessings, through Word and Sacrament, and through the good people he puts in our path. We wait in hope because we believe in God’s words and promises. We do not know his ways, we cannot understand his timing and we have none of his wisdom, but in the end, that doesn’t mat-ter…because we know he is faithful and will not deceive us. He will come as he has said, and he calls us to wait for him – not in dread, not in boredom, not in frustration, but in faith and in hope. This is among the great lessons of Advent. “Wait for the Lord, take courage; be stouthearted, wait for the Lord!” -- Ps 27:14 - Fr. Richard Vigoa
