A MESSAGE FROM REVEREND ALISON HAMPTON With so many different forms of communication there is little excuse for not keeping up with friends. Yet, for some reason it is still hard to do. Weeks, months or years go by and I suddenly wake up to the fact that I am losing contact with many people I really care about. Last month I got a text: “Rosanna Mary arrived by Caesarean 5pm today. Catherine tired but well”. Catherine is one of my God daughters, her parents are some of our oldest friends and I didn't even know she was pregnant! But whether I know what is going on in these peoples' lives, they can ring me at any time, and they can trust me to be there if they need me. What sort of friend are you? Are you the sort who can be depended on in a crisis or are you a fair weather variety, swift to vanish the moment there is any suggestion that commitment might cost something. The Gospel writers rarely wrote of friendship, and I can't help wondering why. Other Ancient writers valued friendship. To them friendship seemed that happiest and most fully human of what is often referred to as the four loves – affection, Eros, charity and friendship. Indeed, Aristotle calls it the "flower of virtue". I think we can all understand what he meant. When I worked as a curate I held an annual evening for couples getting married in the church. It was a great evening of getting to know each other, and one of the exercises we did was to tell someone else in the room what you really valued in your partner. People are always reluctant to speak up, but when we gathered in the larger group to hear everyone's ideas, it was wonderful to hear a brave person say "She is my best friend". Despite its prized value in the ancient world, friendship seems to have become the also ran of what C.S. Lewis calls "the four loves." People confuse "friendly" with "being my friend". I don't know how many of you are familiar with the television advertisement for Macdonald's happy meals. It shows the fickleness of children's playground relation-ships and compares them to a cheap snack. So what has happened to friendship? Were the Gospel writers right to ignore it. Perhaps they, like later writers believed that it was something we could live without. This isn't about choosing between chicken nuggets or a burger, it's not about a children's playground. This is about grown up relationships. Aristotle wrote that "when friendship encourages fidelity, it is the most beautiful thing of all". For me, that sensitivity shows that friendship is a gift that we should use wisely and value highly. So what does it mean to be a friend? When I was a teenager I had a tee-shirt with the slogan, "a friend is someone who likes you" emblazoned across the front. I liked wear-ing it because I thought it reflected something about me. But what a naive statement – and perhaps rather glib because being a friend to someone brings peace and confi-dence, succour and sustenance for the journey through life. Yours Alison

ST PAULS CATHEDRAL 300 YEARS CELEBRATIONS

As part of the celebrations next year, Peter Welton has been commissioned by the Cathedral authorities to paint 4 water-

colours which will be hung in the crypt there as part of a celebratory exhibition during 2010. Peter, at the moment of writing, has completed two of the paintings and is well on

with the remaining two. He has chosen to juxtapose an im-age of the cathedral with a modern image that he has

been able to tease out of the environs of this magnificent building.

Anybody who would be interested in seeing this work-in-progress should con-

tact him on 0116 2478761 and he will be delighted to welcome you to his studio at Orchard Cottage, Arnesby.

NEWS FROM OUR VILLAGE SCHOOLS ARNESBY and MOWSLEY ST. NICHOLAS C.of E. PRIMARY SCHOOL FEDERATION www.arnesby.leics.sch.uk 0116 2478563 Mowsley School 0116 2402464 ARNESBY: We are preparing our children for the future in many ways. One of these is to give them the very best standard possible with regard to ICT - or in other words their ability to use a computer and other technology. We have had a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) at Arnesby for just over a year but it is now in a very enhanced state. So good in fact the provider, Uniservity, is using it as ex-emplar material. Also, of course, the junior children are using it daily, for home-work, reference material and general communication with their teachers. Another area of excellence - at the recent Small School Sports meeting we are delighted to report that we won the shield for the best school overall. We are one of the smallest of the ten schools and this was a great achievement by our team. MOWSLEY: We are very lucky at Mowsley to have a playing field, which is providing and will provide us with excellent sports opportunities. The children (weather per-mitting) are increasingly making use of the field at lunchtime and the benches provided by the PTA have facilitated this. They are sited under the trees to provide shade but we hope to have a shed erected as soon as possible to store our parasols and other sports equipment. Cherry trees will be planted in front of the shed, sited in the top corner, to provide an attractive addition to the field. May I on behalf of the staff of both schools, thank you for all the support we have had over the last school year. We do appreciate our links with the com-munity and wish you all a very restful (and warm) summer! Headteacher: Diane Miller HUSBANDS BOSWORTH C. of E. PRIMARY SCHOOL 01858 880212 New Head Teacher in September We are very pleased to announce that Mr Matthew Bown will be taking up post as Headteacher when the new academic year starts in September. He has already been to visit the school several times and is getting to know the chil-dren and staff. TAG Rugby On Saturday 20th June the school took part in the TAG Rugby Festival at Fleckney Primary School. The children played very well and won the Shield. Congratulations to everyone involved! Thank you I would like to say a very big thank you to everyone who has supported me since Christmas while I have been acting Headteacher. I have enjoyed the challenges over what have been two very busy and eventful terms. Acting Headteacher: Yvonne Durrant

‘HEXAGON COMMUNITY’ COFFEE MORNINGS There will be no Coffee Mornings held in July or August. Watch out for details of the September date in the next issue of the Hexagon. ST MARY’S ROSE FESTIVAL Saturday 15th & Sunday 16th August Thanks to supportive offers of help from many residents and friends of the vil-lage this event is going ahead to celebrate our patronal festival weekend. This always falls in mid-August so although we may be stretching the theme of roses slightly beyond its natural season (the reference to St Mary as ‘the Rose of Bethlehem’ adding justification to this), we can promise that there will be roses, at least forming the basis, of our floral displays. The church will be open from 11.00am until 5.00pm on both days. Coffee, tea and cakes will be available. Our thanksgiving weekend will conclude with a Songs of Praise service at 5.00pm on Sunday 16th August. We do hope that as many people as possible will join us then or visit St Mary’s at some time over the Festival weekend. Rowena Nesbitt BRUNTINGTHORPE HERITAGE GROUP DID YOU KNOW that in the 1930s Bruntingthorpe had two village shops. One was on the Cross, Main St. owned by Percy Higgs and one on Church Walk owned by Tubby Hiddens. We are trying to establish at what period Brunting-thorpe had the most retail outlets and what types of produce or trade they dealt in. Have you any information? Alan Baker

***ARNESBY CONTINUED FROM PAGE 9 ARNESBY MAY FAYRE Monday 25th May 2009 The May Fayre once again provided a fun and value for money day out for families. Over 900 cars and around 4000 visitors enjoyed the live music, food and drink and the various entertainments provided around the village. Around £8,000 was raised (2008 £5,000) for local organisations and amenities. For the third year we were affected by the weather with overcast skies and a short shower at noon which probably affected attendance during the afternoon. The ‘Craft Village’ in its own marquee this year, featured demonstrations of traditional crafts including felting, spinning and jewellery making. The pupils of Arnesby School performed a Maypole dance on the green. The ninth running of the three villages 5 mile cross country race attracted al-most 90 runners including 28 juniors. We also had a fiercely contested Tug of War competition. The organisers would like to thank the many villagers and their friends and families who helped in any way before, during and after the day and without whom the day could not have succeeded. Many photographs of the day can be found on the village web site. Terry Emmony
