Where there is hope… I remember my Mother showing me the Anderson shelter in my Grandmother’s garden where she took refuge as a teenager with her brothers and sisters during the bomb-ing raids on Edinburgh in World War II. She described people helping each other in times of need with a hope that things would get better. My Father recently compiled the wartime experiences of my Uncle who was captured in the Middle East, held as a prisoner in Italy, escaped only to be recaptured and held prisoner in Poland, then later force marched from Poland to Germany. My Father rarely talks about his own experiences of serving in Asia during World War II. I have cousins who have served in Northern Ireland, the Falk-lands and Iraq. We will all have similar stories in our own families of young people who have served to bring hope for a better world for their own and fu-ture generations. We are the benefactors and owe them a great debt of thanks. Of course hope can so easily be dashed by tragedy or an unexpected turn of events and we look for an explanation; is it something we have done or is God to blame? God of course can be an easy target, but this approach denies the character of God found in the Gospels and the New Testament. God’s charac-ter is found in the life of Jesus described through witnesses and testimonies that portray a God who wants us to get to know him, who is full of compassion, a God who is love, a God who gives meaning, purpose and hope to this life and beyond. No wonder that Jesus’ close friend, Peter, exclaims of God “By his great mercy he has given us a new birth into a living hope through the res-urrection of Jesus Christ from the dead and into an inheritance that is imperish-able, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you”. The Gospels are where I and many others began to understand God’s character and the meaning of hope and life. Reverend Andrew Rhoades, October 2009

POSADA This year Advent starts on 29th November and we start to think of what Christmas means to each of us as we look forward to celebrating the birth of Christ. To encourage us this year we will be holding a Posada Activity. This is inspired by the South American custom of Las Posadas (Spanish for "The Inns") . It is a yearly tradition, which symbol-izes the difficulty Mary and Joseph endured before finding a place to stay where Jesus could be born. It is a very important Christmas Tradition for them, and something, which is increasingly popular in England.

Models of Mary and Joseph will be moving around the village, staying in a different house each night to symbolise their journey. This is a great way to think about what Christmas means to your family and a chance to meet new people. During November a rota will be set up for people to “house” the figures and it will be important to make sure you take them to the next family after you have had your turn.

We will be sending Mary and Joseph off on their long journey at a special Advent Com-munion Service on 6th December at 11.00am at All Saints, Theddingworth. This service is for the young and the not so young, because Christmas is for everyone! We will then welcome the figures into the Crib on Christmas Eve at the 3.00pm Crib Service. Whether you are young in age or young at heart, I hope that you will take Mary and Joseph for a night in Advent. If you would like to take part in this seasonal activity, please give your name to Pam Skinner at Laurels Farm on 01858 880236 by Sunday 22nd November. Rev’d Alison & Rev’d Andy

The autumn term is moving along very fast indeed! It’s a time of change – in the weather, the colours of the countryside and for our school too. Many of you will know that Mrs. Miller is on long-term sick leave due to illness. We welcome Mrs. Marlene Branagh to Arnesby and Mowsley schools as Executive Head-teacher in Mrs. Miller’s absence. We all send our love and thoughts to Mrs. Miller and remember her in our prayers at school. Our harvest festivals were a huge success, the children brought a huge assort-ment of fruit and vegetables to festoon the church with. All of the children were involved, with the older children providing readings based around Jesus’ parables and the theme ‘You reap what you sow’ at Arnesby and at Mowsley the theme was 'Harvest - Here, and in the Third World', with the chil-dren displaying their artwork. The harvest gifts were then distributed to the elderly folk in both Arnesby and Shearsby and were gratefully received. At Mowsley the beautiful display was donated to St Nicholas Church for their weekend services. The children continue to work hard and Arnesby children have created some wonderful Victorian Spoon Dolls to accompany our ‘Victorian Children’ project. Many of the children find it fascinating to think that a hundred years ago, the school teacher would have lived in the house next to the school room. What is now our music room could well have been her bedroom! If only we had a time machine! Maybe that’s a project for our Design and Technology lessons. At Mowsley the Juniors have been investigating the local area, with the children taking part in Heritage Day and making a scale model of the village. The Infants have been enjoying learning about the Great Fire of London and producing some lovely Autumn art. Deputy Headteacher: Mark McDermott HUSBANDS BOSWORTH C. of E. PRIMARY SCHOOL 01858 880212

Our first half term is over and what a busy term we have had. We enjoyed a wonderful harvest festival at All Saints church with Rev’d Andy and are continuing our church awards services led by Rev’d Alison. We are becoming very involved in many sporting events around the area and now have a school football team. Our assemblies have had many visitors this term including Rev’d Kennard, Rev’d Cook and Rev’d Alison. We have more visitors planned for next term too. I have enjoyed my first half term as the Headteacher and look forward to my next. Headteacher: Matthew Bown

CHURCH OF ST MARY MAGDALENE

Churchwarden: David Durran 0116 2478708 ST MARY MAGDALENE HARVEST SUPPER Mon 28th Sept The usual full complement of people enjoyed shepherds pie, followed by a wonderful selection of pies and crumbles. A big thank you to everyone who donated fruit , vegetables and preserves and to those who bought on the night, enabling us to send the profits to LOROS. Thanks to all who provided food for the evening. A presentation was made to Barry and Leslie Morris who are leaving Shearsby. Richard Kew thanked them for their outstanding service to the village and com-munity. We all wish them well in the future. ☺ CELTIC/FOLK EVENING Sat 3rd Oct Entertainment was provided by Strung out Sisters string and vocal trio and Ceilidh Band, one of whom was the caller for the various dances which were interspersed by musical renditions. It was good to see everyone, including my-self having a go and as I remarked in jest, there were a lot of left feet! It was a huge success and enjoyed by all. Thanks to Ann & Stuart and the band. We must do it again sometime. David Durran MOBILE LIBRARY VAN See p.14
