Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe
This Solemnity is a fairly recent addition to the Liturgical Year. In 1925, while Europe was still recovering
from the shock of the devastation of World War I, Pope Pius XI proclaimed this feast to emphasize the
sovereignty of the divine over the atheistic secularism that was sweeping the world.
In Luke’s gospel, Jesus expresses His kingly power by hanging on the cross between criminals as leaders
and soldiers mock Him. He saved others, let him save himself.Tradition has given the name, Dismas, to
the good thief in the story. Dismas is a nobody, who at the end of his life has a transforming moment of
grace. Dismas participates in a unique moment of human history. Dismas is present at the moment when
God’s power is at its height. It is the sacred moment when the great high priest is reconciling the world to
God. At this longed- for moment in time, Jesus Christ saves the whole world by not saving himself.
This moment that focuses on lowliness and vulnerability teaches us that honesty is the remedy for our sins,
acceptance of our powerlessness is the key to receiving paradise. The way the power of Jesus works is that
He never used it to His own advantage. When we accept the truth that we cannot save ourselves, then we
can more easily go forth and bring salvation to anyone who is being crucified by an unforgiving world.

Esta solemnidad es una adición bastante reciente al año litúrgico. En 1925, mientras Europa todavía se
estaba recuperando del impacto de la devastación de la Primera Guerra Mundial, el Papa Pío XI proclamó
esta fiesta para enfatizar la soberanía de lo divino sobre el secularismo ateo que estaba arrasando el mundo.

mundo entero al no salvarse a sí mismo.
Este momento que se centra en la humildad y la vulnerabilidad nos enseña que la honestidad es el remedio
para nuestros pecados, la aceptación de nuestra impotencia es la clave para recibir el paraíso. La forma en
que funciona el poder de Jesús es que nunca lo usó para su propio beneficio. Cuando aceptamos la verdad
de que no podemos salvarnos a nosotros mismos, podemos avanzar más fácilmente y llevar la salvación a
cualquiera que esté siendo crucificado por un mundo implacable.
