Another Great Season
They say that numbers don’t lie and when you consider that the St. Mary’s Fish Fry served almost 8,000
(7,836) fish dinners on six Fridays in Lent that says a lot! However, the number of fish dinners served is only
a small part of the story. What would be just as impressive would be the statistics about how many people
participated across all age groups to make this annual event such a success – from senior parishioners working
in their kitchens making homemade baked goods for our dessert table to eighth grade Confirmation students
bussing tables and carrying trays for elderly guests and moms and dads with two kids in their arms. The
Knights of Columbus are everywhere, from the kitchen cooking fish to the computers taking orders, from
set-up to clean-up. Then there are all the wonderful people that you meet every week in our church hall.
Some of them are here for the first time and wait patiently in a long line, and some of them come every single
week. Some of them are faithful Catholics who have never eaten meat on a Friday in Lent for their entire
lives, and one week I met a whole table of guests from our friends at Epworth Methodist Church (who are so
grateful for the way we support their spaghetti dinners) and another week, while I was blessing trays as people
began to walk to their tables, I met a Presbyterian pastor from Fox Chapel who was there with his whole
family. I am also amazed at how far some people will drive to attend one of our dinners, from Cranberry to
the South Hills. But, of course, none of this consistent growth and community could happen without strong
leadership and leaders with great hearts and that’s exactly what we have in Paul and Ginny Penezic. And
every year that you try to thank them they always respond in the same way, “I think I know how we can make
it a little better next year!” We are so blessed in so many different ways to have a Fish Fry at St. Mary’s
because it is about so much more than raising money by selling fish dinners.

St. Mary Faith Formation 7th graders Host Baby Shower
Beginning in September and for the next 9 months, the 7th grade Faith Formation students took part in a Spiritual Adoption Program. Each student “spiritually” adopted a baby who is in danger of abortion. The students named their babies and prayed daily asking Jesus, Mary and Joseph to protect the babies from abortion and to guide and protect the babies’ parents throughout their lives. Each of the 9 months the students learned about the Miracle of Life as the baby grew in its mother’s womb from conception through birth. As they anticipated the birth of their own babies, the students held a prayer service of thanksgiving and celebrated with a baby shower for a young client of Genesis of Pittsburgh, a community outreach center that provides programs and services to women in need. Congratulations and Best Wishes to our guest mother-to-be!!
First Holy Communion The entire Parish Family of St. Ursula and St. Mary will open their doors and hearts to the young people celebrating their First Eucharist in one of the groups who will assemble at our litur-gies. We ask that all parishioners make room for the many guests who will join us this week and next week and to be alert to the reserved places that have been set-aside for the children and their families. What a special day in our Parish Family when so many of our young people will join us in receiving the Body and Blood of the Lord Jesus.

‘Protect Life Rule’ to Strip Planned Parenthood of Millions in Federal Funds After the Trump administration finalized new federal rules Friday, by which abortion businesses will be ineligible to re-ceive Title X Program funding. Planned Parenthood is ex-pected to be stripped will be stripped of about $60 million in federal funds due to the rule change. The finalized version of the “Protect Life Rule” was announced in a Feb. 22 press re-lease from the Department of Health and Human Services. Ti-tle X funding was not cut as a result of the new rules, which impact eligibility requirements. Among other provisions, the Protect Life Rule requires that there be a physical and financial separation between recipients of Title X funds and facilities that perform abortions. Facilities that provide “nondirective counseling” about abortion can still receive funds. Previous regulations, written during Bill Clinton’s presidency, not only allowed for health clinics that were co-located with abortion businesses to receive funds, but also required that Ti-tle X recipients refer patients for abortions. http://www.ncregister.com/daily-news/protect-life-rule-to-strip
OBGYN Who Delivered 5,000 Babies: Abortion is “Never” Necessary to Protect a Woman’s Health
Doctor and Kansas Rep. Roger W. Marshall wrote an op-ed saying there aren’t any reasons why a late-term abortion is necessary to protect a woman’s health. Marshall is an obstetrician who has delivered more than 5,000 babies in Western Kansas over 25 years. He also served as an OB-GYN at a state mental health hospital and prison. Pregnant women face much higher risks for uterine perforation and life-threatening hemorrhaging during late-term abortions, according to Marshall. The procedures also pose a high risk of infection, permanent scarring and infertility, according to the doctor. “Point blank, late-term abortions are unsafe and are more dangerous than naturally occurring childbirth in almost any situation,” Marshall wrote. Marshall called New York’s law “inhumane” for both mothers and children. “I urge you to tell all of your elected federal officials to support the Born Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, which is the first step to immediately protect those babies who have survived botched abortions and mandate that they receive proper medical care,” the doctor and state representative also urged. The Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act would mandate babies born alive after an abortion would receive the “same protection of law as any newborn.” https://www.lifenews.com/2019/02/12/obgyn-who-delivered-5000-babies-abortion-is-never-necessary-to-protect-a-womans-health/ Editor’s Note: The Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act has failed to achieve the 60 votes necessary to invoke the ending of debate and bring the legislation forward. The Senate voted 53 to 44 to invoke closing debate on Feb. 25, but fell short of the two-thirds majority needed to halt a filibuster by Democratic senators.
