July 13th, 2014 - Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
From Fr. Suresh
TODAY’S READINGS:
First Reading: Isaiah 55:10-11;
Psalm 65:10, 11, 12-13, 14;
Second Reading: Romans 8:18-23;
Gospel: Matthew 13:1-23
GOSPEL ACCLAMATION:
“The seed is the word of God, Christ is the sower.
All who come to him will have life forever.”
FIFTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME... ARE WE FRUITFUL CHRISTIANS?
Hear then the parable of the sower." With his analogy of the sower and the seed, Jesus gives us four images to help us
gauge the depth of our spiritual maturity. What kind of "soil" does our faith exist in? Are we fruitful Christians? Does
our seed yield as much as it could? The first image is of the seed that fell on the path. This describes those who hear
about Christianity "without understanding it." Nothing can grow, nothing can blossom at this level. We should ask
ourselves if we have taken the time to be sure we understand the faith we practice. Are we stuck at a superficial level,
allowing stereotypes, popular opinion, or media distortions to "steal away" the richness of the Catholic faith?
Perhaps we have been properly educated in the teachings of the faith, but our commitment has been fickle. Are we the
seed on the rocky ground, that "has no root and lasts only for a time"? Have we experienced difficulties in the practice
of our faith that have led us to become indifferent? Have we found it just too troublesome to bring our faith into our
everyday lives?
Or have we heard the word, but allowed it to be choked by "worldly anxiety and the lure of riches"? Do we appreciate
Christianity but fail to make the sacrifices that it requires? Are we more interested in a comfortable life than anything
else?
Many of us have sampled these stages at different times. But ultimately, our goal as Christians is to be "the seed sown
on rich soil." We are called to be open to hearing the word, to seek to understand it, and to allow it to take firm root in
our hearts. When we do this, the seed of our own faith can produce a rich harvest for the world.

PRAYER — PROTECTION FROM HURRICANES
Father, all the elements of nature obey your command. Calm the storms and
hurricanes that threaten us and turn our fear of your power into praise of
your goodness. Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, who
lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and
ever. Amen.

THANK YOU FROM FR. JOSEPH
I have been away for a few weeks to attend the ordinations of several of
my classmates as well as to celebrate Masses of Thanksgiving at different
parishes that I served in the past. Now that I am back at St. Ignatius, I wanted
to take the time to thank everyone for your prayers and support for my
ordination and first Mass. It really was a great weekend and so many people
need to be thanked. Fr. Suresh, Fr. Naveen, Angela Miller, the parish staff,
and the entire planning committee, all deserve tremendous thanks for the
many hours they spent planning and preparing everything right down to the
smallest detail. Thank you to Simon Donoghue, Sarah Bertran, Albert Chin,
all the musicians, and the choir for the wonderful music. Thank you to all
who helped to decorate the church, the hall, and the courtyard as well as all
those who prepared food for the reception. Thank you to all who were a part
of the various dance groups that performed at the reception. What a wonder-
ful surprise! I am very happy to be assigned to St. Ignatius for the next 6
weeks as an Associate Pastor. I look forward to serving and praying with/for
all of you during this time. God bless,
- Fr. Joseph
