December 8th, 2019 - Second Sunday of Advent
This Weekend’s Readings
TODAY’S READINGS First Reading: Isaiah 11:1-10
Psalm: 72:1-2, 7-8, 12-13, 17
Second Reading: Romans 15:4-9
Gospel: Matthew 3:1-12
GOSPEL ACCLAMATION “Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths: all flesh shall see the salvation of God.” - Luke 3:4, 6
SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT... TO STOOP IS THE MARK OF HUMILITY
What does it mean to be worthy? There are a few different ways to approach this question. Today’s Gospel highlights
two: the way of the Pharisees and the way of John the Baptist. Our faith values good works and discipleship. Perhaps,
then, we “earn” our worth by adhering to the right doctrines and following the right pious practice. The Pharisees
thought they were worthy. Due to their religious pedigree and proper procedures, they were self-satisfied. John the
Baptist’s words to them are strong. “Do not resume to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’” Of
course, Jesus (and John) don’t omit the responsibility for moral behavior. John gives the Pharisees quite a strong
warning in that regard. “Produce good fruit as evidence of your repentance … every tree that does not bear good fruit
will be cut down and thrown into the fire.”
It’s a question of attitude. Of disposition. It’s a matter of the heart. If anyone would be worthy in this scenario, it’s
John the Baptist. Jesus himself will name him the greatest of prophets and a great man. John, however, recognizes his
own lowly place in the grand scheme of things. “The one who is coming after me is mightier than I. I am not worthy
to carry his sandals.” The Pharisees take pride in being “better” than others. John embraces humility in Christ being
“better” than him. We don’t self-generate our own worthiness. We receive it as a gift from God.
In a few short weeks, we’ll celebrate the birth of Christ. Bishop Ven. Fulton Sheen wrote about the Nativity in his
“Life of Christ”: “Because Jesus was born in a cave, all who wish to see Him must stoop. To stoop is the mark of hu-
mility. The proud refuse to stoop and, therefore, they miss divinity.” God invites us to prepare our hearts this Advent.
When you consider your own life, where are you looking for your worth? This Christmas, are you prepared to stoop?

CHRISTMAS OFFERTORY COLLECTION The Christmas offertory collection is part of our annual parish budget. The entire Christmas collection stays right here
in the parish. All other collections and donations during the year are assessed 7% by the Archdiocese, whereas the
Christmas collection is exempt from such assessment. You can make your Christmas donation to the parish anytime
over the month of December and into January, just so long as you indicate in the cheques and envelopes that it is your
“Christmas 2019 offering”. If you are going away during the holidays, please consider making your Christmas offering
to St. Ignatius Parish before you leave. Thank you!
CANDLELIGHT CAROL SERVICE The Carol Service takes place in the school courtyard at 7:00 pm. Readings for the season, school band and singing of
carols. All are welcome.
I pray that you all have a blessed week! - Fr. Theo

ADVENT PRAYER
Lord Jesus, you said that you came not to condemn
the world but that we might have abundant life.
Open my heart to receive the abundant life you offer
me this Advent season. Allow me to experience the
wonder of a child looking forward to Christmas for
the first time. Strengthen my desire for your coming
that I might be renewed in heart, mind and spirit as I
prepare to celebrate your coming at Christmas.
Amen.
“Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, ‘I am the Light of the world;
he who follows Me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
What are the liturgical readings for the Sundays of Advent?
Each of the four Sundays of Advent has its own special readings and characteristics:
First Sunday of Advent - The readings look forward to the "End Times" and the coming of the "Day of the Lord" or
the "Messianic Age"; the Gospel is an excerpt from the Apocalyptic Discourse of Jesus in one of the Synoptic Gospels.
Second Sunday of Advent - The Gospel readings focus on the preaching and ministry of John the Baptist as the
forerunner of Jesus, the one who came to "Prepare the Way of the Lord."
Third Sunday of Advent - The Gospel readings continue to focus on John the Baptist, while the first and second
readings convey the joy that Christians feel with the increasing closeness of the incarnation and the world's salvation.
Fourth Sunday of Advent - The Gospels tell of the events that immediately preceded the birth of Jesus, including the
dreams and visions of Joseph and Mary of Nazareth.
See the website of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) for the full texts of these liturgical readings.
